PDP lambasts Oba of Lagos, Ekiti lawmakers, says anti-Igbo threat ” plunge to anarchy”

Olisa Metuh

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has condemned what it called the “emerging height of political recklessness in Lagos and Ekiti states” ahead of Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections and called on all Nigerians to stand up against such anti-democratic tendencies.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, Monday, the party said the “senseless and unpatriotic” impeachment move against Governor Ayo Fayose by out-going APC state legislators and the “barbaric” death threats on non-indigenes in Lagos by the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, if they vote for the PDP candidate, Jimi Agbaje, ascend to a height of unruliness that should not be accommodated.

“The PDP totally and unequivocally rejects the flimsy and unsubstantiated allegations concocted by the APC legislators against Governor Fayose. We state in very clear terms that we will stand with him and bear our full weight in defense of the mandate freely given to him by the people of Ekiti state.

“We invite all lovers of democracy and the international community to note the antics of APC and the deliberate plot to destabilize the polity even when it is yet to assume power,” the party said.

It also said it was most unfortunate that a royal father of the status of the Oba of Lagos should attempt to drag the revered traditional institution into partisan politics to the level of threatening innocent Nigerians with the view to prevent them from freely exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right.

“Our response to the Oba of Lagos is that he cannot play God and can never be God. God owns the universe and every part of it and can never share His glory with any human no matter how highly placed.

“We therefore call on all Nigerians in Lagos state; all Igbos, Hausas, Yorubas and people of other tribes; all northerners and southerners; all Christians and Muslims to turn against this unpatriotic stance, by coming out enmasse to vote for the PDP candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, on Saturday,” it said.

PDP added that the comments by the Oba reminds of the 2013 inhuman and callous arrest, detention and eventual “deportation” of non-indigenes by the APC-led government of Lagos state and confirms fears that the APC is indeed on a mission to destroy our national unity, balkanize the nation and obliterate the personal freedom Nigerians enjoy today.

“Already, the APC has started terrorizing supporters of the PDP with vows to make life unbearable for them when it eventually assumes power.

“Our investigation reveals that many of our prominent supporters have been marked. The process has already started with threats to the life, family and business of the Chairman of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah for supporting PDP candidates and helping non-indigenes win some Lagos seats in the National Assembly on the platform of the our great party.

“Indeed, if this threats on a duly elected state governor and innocent Nigerians constitute the picture or foretaste of the order of the day when the APC finally assumes power at the center, then the nation is in serious danger. However, the PDP states in very unambiguous terms that Nigerians would not accept such under any guise whatsoever.

“This is more so because in the last 16 years, our citizens from all walks of lives have seen civility and decorum under the PDP-led administration and would not accept any attempt by anybody to institute a reign of terror in the country.

“We therefore urge General Muhammadu Buhari as the leader of the APC to call his members and supporters, particularly in Lagos and Ekiti to order; especially bearing in mind that it was the peaceful atmosphere and the level playing ground nurtured by the PDP-led administration that created the room for his emergence at the presidential polls,” it said.

The ruling party further said that Nigeria cannot at this moment afford to slide into anarchy, reign of terror and deliberate schemes to divide the people for selfish political reasons.

“The PDP will completely resist all anti democratic forces from any quarters. We therefore charge Nigerians, especially those in Lagos and Ekiti states respectively to stand up fearlessly and reject the unpatriotic stance of the Oba of Lagos and the undemocratic move to dismantle the mandate given to Governor Ayo Fayose by the people,” it said.

The ‘hunter’ has now become the ‘hunted’.While I disagree with the alleged position of the Oba, I make bold to state that all this attitude stemmed from the long years of impunity that has been entrenched by the PDP led Federal Government.I have not heard Mr Metuh condemn the Ekiti State Governor or the minority PDP legislators when they sacked the majority APC lawmakers from the state house of assembly.Indeed where was Mr Metuh when the Nassarawa state PDP dominated legislature was harassing the state Governor? You always reap what you sow!!!!

    • share Idea

Did Buhari concede defeat in 2011 but GEJ did. Must you repeat the bad things did by PDP or is that the change promised by APC?

      • Jika

Please read what I posted again. For the avoidance of doubt,I said I DISAGREE with what the Oba did. However,I don’t think you can dispute my points regarding the entrenchment of impunity by the PDP led Federal Government over the years.I made mention of two examples in my post.If what I said is not true, you can counter that with superior argument.Thank you.

  • Victor Gee

What they are trying to do in Ekiti state is criminal and we must resisit it.

    • segun

Igboman Victor Gee, are you from Ekiti? Who are the “We”?

      • Tunsj

He is from a cave in SS.

  • As i see am

We warned and warned the Yoruba Christians…..

BEWARE OF ISLAMIC JIHAD IN YORUBALAND AS FOSTERED BY APC.
BEWARE OF THE FOLLOWING THREE MUJAHEDEENS IN LAGOS, VIZ:

•Alhaji Rilwanu Akiolu, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and, Alhaji Raji Fashola

WE ARE NOW PROVED RIGHT…LAGOS IS IN THE MIDDLE OF ISLAMIST JIHAD

    • Akin

So the Igbo christians want to take over YORUBALAND? Just asking.

  • Victor Gee

Oba of Lagos will die mysteriously. He has dared his god.

    • segun

Igbo man Victor Gee. Which god? An whose god?

    • Tunsj

I’m sure you are talking about yourself. You are a sociopath.

    • segun

      Igbo man, reply who?

    • Tunsj

Reply who? Are you real or has the dementia progressed that far already?

  • sanetalk

I do not endorse the alleged statement by Oba Akiolu, it clearly negates the spirit of democracy and free choice. I don’t really understand the reason for all the aggravation because Agbaje CANNOT win Lagos even if all eligible voters are shipped from the SE to Lagos. However as regards Ekiti, I really love it that PDP is getting a dose of its own medicine, Fayose’s emergence was a product of the impunity that was the hallmark of PDP’s inglorious reign and he will surely be kicked out and very soon too as the judiciary will no longer be constrained by extraneous government influence

  • Africa

I believe all well meaning Nigerians find the Oba’s comment despicable and condemn it in the
strongest terms. However, we won’t be coming out enmasse to vote for the PDP in Lagos because the
pains inflicted by Mr. Metu’s party on we the poor masses are evident and we
are still suffering. The Oba should be called to order immediately, comments
like his have no place in a normal society. Lagos would not be what it is without the Ndigbo.

  • Ken

The truth is that Lagos belongs to APC and the Oba is only trying to warn the Igbos who are known for been mischievous. We don’t want PDP in Lagos and that’s simple because being in the opposition will not be good for Lagos state.

    • New_Biafra

You can as well say that you don’t want democracy anymore.Tribal bigots

    • Nkuu

Lagos is a Nigerian state/city. Oba is OBA OF SOME FEW YORUBAS. He is not even the Oba of all Yoruba indigenes in Lagos.

THANK GOD, CULTURALLY, IGBOS HAVE EXPERTLY WAYS TO DEAL WITH MISBEHAVING “KING,” OBA, or EMIR.THAT IS WHY WE DO NOT HAVE SUCH PARASITES!!!

IGBOS MUST VOTE AGBAJE/PDP TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THE RITUALIST OBA. IGBOS MUST STOP SHOWING COURTESY TO THE RITUALIST OBA. HE DESERVES NONE OF THAT.

  • Ken

All Igbos should shut up please because the oba is right! You can never go to any igbo state as an outsider and do bussiness or live because they will kill you over there and chase you away. Igbo land is the worst place to ever live because those people are very evil yet they go to other people’s land and be shouting one Nigeria! Left to me Igbos should get their biafra and let every single igbo living in other geo political zone be deported to biafra.

    • TruthSayer

      100% right!!!!

    • Tunsj

My question is, how many Yorubas are living in SS and how many Igbos are living in Southwest?

      • Bejim

Let the 2016 census capture the figures, the last census failed to do so despite agitations.

      • Nkuu

        None and your point is?

    • Nkuu

Shaaaraaap!!! you are a semi-illiterate. Oba of Some Few Yorubs is right? That is, Igbos should vote for APC or jump into the Lagoon? LOL….yyour Oba is perhaps the most uncivilized Oba that have sat on Lagos throne.

IGBO MUST NEVER SHOW COURTESY TO THIS ANIMAL/RITUALIST CALL OBA. IBGO MUST NOW VOTE FOR AGBAJE/PDO EN MASSE.

THE RITUALIST OBA SHOULD HUG THE NEAREST TRANSFORMER LOCATED NEAR HIS FILTHY HOME OR WALK STRAIGHT TO THE LAGOON TO TAKE A DIVE OF NO RETURN.

    • Datu Bugna

Mumu see your phrase…”kill you and chase you away”….mumu

  • excel

If the statement is meant to be true, it’s very bad. Metuh and is cohort should know that when the oba endorsed jonathan the oba was the best but now that the game has change they have started their usual cry. We are not a learner, this propaganda will not buy u any sympathy vote. Jk is not ok. We can’t be joking at this hour.

  • Seyi

Igboman Olisa Metuh, I have a question for you? You failed to mention that the Akwa State and Anambra state governors DEPORTED non indigenes INCLUDNG YORUBAS from Akwa Ibom and Anambra states. Why did you forget to mention these? Is what is good for geese not good for the gander? Your Igbo views are unacceptable and should be rejected for these exclusions-period. Your MASSOB and other Igbos have called for the end of Nigeria for long. Please implement that call. Lagos is Yorubaland. Just mark that-and no one should mess around Lagos, as we Yorubas know our bounds in other states and will never mess around non -Yoruba states.

    • Nkuu

Essentially an average Yoruba is now a semi-literate. What has happened to these people? This is what happened when a people select as their best friends illiterate almajiris. Now cowardly Yorubas have now began to turn into MUMU too. Kai, Black man…nawaaaooooo

    • Datu Bugna

Nothing is more laughable than how the Yoruba extraction try to attach themselves to Hausa and Fulani, When it will not take the Hausa Fulani 10 Minutes to exterminate you all, Be wise Mumu,….I love the Hausa’s and the Fulani’s because they are like the IBOs, they talk Less and do more…Hausa/Fulani and Ibo s believe in action, and they don’t yield to threats…any …Watch your Mouth Seyi…….How does Mr Akiolu want to achieve getting the Ibos drawn in the Lagoon…? With JUJU or what…/? I think his age is affecting him already….the Last time i saw him he looked totally used .

  • Okey

Is another pogrom against the Ndigbo in Nigeria the offing ? Last election, I learnt all of them in the far North did not come out to vote but, instead, ran to the Barracks for their safety and had to remain their a few days more, surfacing only after Jonathan had accepted defeat. Now, it is Oba Akiolu of Lagos threatening pogrom against Igbos in the West should Ambode fail to win next Saturday.

When. during collation of last Saturday’s presidential election results, persons I had considered lone-oddballs launched on the internet, a pogrom call on Nigerians to “Kill every Igbo should Jonathan win,” I thought they were alone. But now I am forced to think these oddballs were acting for the preference, behest or direct instruction of certain elites in our society. The irony and most unfortunate aspect of it all is that these elites who incite hate, and as a last resort, proceed to carry out the hate operation themselves as reported of Retired Policeman Akiolu, have worked in state institutions which primarily should instil nationalism in them and from where they had preached patriotism, tolerance and peace. But alas, they are more often than not found to be behind the source of divisions amongst ordinary Nigerians.

My advice to my people in Lagos is simple: Retired Policeman Akiolu’s threat is mere swashbuckling, empty threat and utter bunkum. Instead, it is a realization and recognition of the fact that Igbos can help in deciding who becomes Governor of Lagos State and that they may dash Akiolu’s hope, if they choose to. Secondly and more important: the fact is that there are Lagosians, Yorubas and indeed, other Nigerians who DO NOT LIKE JONATHAN and at the same time DO NOT LIKE WHAT AMBODE REPRESENTS. This set of Nigerian’s voted against Jonathan last Saturday and are set to vote against Ambode this Saturday. But this set of Nigerians will not succeed without the Igbo vote. It is certain that if Ndigbo in Lagos drop just a single vote in the basket of those set of Nigerians – who do not like Jonathan and also do not like Ambode for what he represents – a huge and mighty upset will be established in Lagos. So Igbos are key to making a decision in that respect and should NEVER be frightened. Lagos and, indeed, Akiolu’s palace is run on taxes extracted from Igbo business in Lagos and therefore should exercise their franchise in any manner of their choice.

Now, unlike Retired Policeman Akiolu, I cannot dictate or even advise any Igbo person in Lagos on who to vote for, but one thing I will let them know is, Akiolu’s threat is as empty as the air. Igbos in Lagos should vote based on their knowledge and conviction.

    • Nuraddin

YOU DUMB IGBO Go and read history to learned what Igbo did to warrant what you Ndigbos called a ‘pogrom’. Now as nothing of the sort was perpetrated by Igbo, they should be rest assured nothing of the sort will be done against them.

      • Nkuu

Shaaaraap, Mr. Almajiri History!! ANIMALS ALL OF YOU ARE!! You must be hiding in Sambisa Forest or some village some few kilometers to Maiduguri with bombs hidden all over yourt body. Igbos did nothing to warrant anything. Army people did something and your warp mind assume that it must be Igbos. I mean that your fathers were stark illiterates could be understood but for someone living in these day and age to be rationalizing the atrocities of ANIMALS like you is nauseating, to say the least.

yesterday is gone–the fULANIS AND yorubas– will never never try such rubbish against THE IBOS AGAIN——The ijaw Nation have openly declared their support 4 iGBOS———separation is the answer not a government by these certificate less drug addicts in APC-

      • Abimbola Ayeni

Please let the Ijaws hand over their land to the Igbos. That will be fine. But we Yorubas will NOT allow any Ijaw Christian and Igbo Christian agenda in Yorubaland. Just take that from us. If this leads to a break up of the country peacefully so be it. We have tried be inclusive. If any ethnic group should take that for granted, we will stop it peacefully and demand a break up of the country where each national group will take an inventory and we call it a day.

        • Nkuu

Shaaaraap!!! If Yorubas want an Oduduwa nation they should declare it or start an insurgency, like Boko Haram, to achieve that. If any Igbos or non-Yorubas are attacked in Lagos or SW, Yorubas will be taught a lesson of their lives. Jeep messing and continue to install ritualists to desecrate traditional institutions. YOU WANT WAHALA YOU WILL GET IT SOON.

        • Datu Bugna

          Village Man

    • Abimbola Ayeni

There is no pogrom anywhere. Bottomline is that there are Ijaw states, Igbo states, Yoruba states, Hausa Fulani state etc. DO NOT let us deceive ourselves. So? We Yorubas will not allow the agenda of Igbo Christians to take over Yoruba states. No no no no we will not allow that. If this leads to a break up of the country peacefully, let it be. No agenda of Igbo Christians will be tolerated in Yorubaland.

      • Kole

You appear to suggest that only Igbos will vote for Agbaje. You also appear to suggest here that Agbaje is not Yoruba but Igbo. Thirdly, it seems to me that you are cork sure that no Yoruba, or Hausa, Fulanis, Binis, and other ethnic nationalities resident in Lagos State will ever vote for Agbaje – not even his family and brethren from Ikorodu axis – when it is very clear for the blind to see and loud for the deaf to hear that he is the better candidate. Sometimes, we need to step out of our extreme parochialism to see the larger picture, which is to salvage Lagos from the strangle hold of a cabal!

      • Nkuu

If Yorubas want an Oduduwa nation they should declare it or start an insurgency, like Boko Haram, to achieve that. If any Igbos or non-Yorubas are attacked in Lagos or SW, Yorubas will be taught a lesson of their lives. Jeep messing and continue to install ritualists to desecrate traditional institutions. The just concluded March 28th 2015 presidential election in Nigeria was undoubtedly the most keenly contested ever. In a recent article, MARCH 28TH 2015 IS AN UNFAIR CONTEST BETWEEN BARACK OBAMA AND GOODLUCK JONATHAN, it was explained how the Obama White House, deployed its formidable bully pulpit in an orchestrated campaign against President Goodluck Jonathan, while clearly supporting the All Progressives Congress (“APC”) candidate (now President-elect) Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retired).

One argued, therefore, that the election was effectively a competition between Goodluck Jonathan on one hand and Barack Obama on the other. In other words, General Buhari was not really on the ballot, as far as one was concerned.

President Barack Obama’s decision to provide undeclared backing to the All Progressives Congress (“APC”) and General Buhari, violated a long-time American convention of non-interference in the elections of other sovereign nations.

The series of patronizing actions, sponsored by the White House, culminated in a joint statement on March 30th 2015 by the American Secretary of State Mr. John Kerry and British Foreign Secretary Mr. Philip Hammond, alleging that the election results “may be subject to deliberate political interference”.

This broadside was released when the vote collation was still ongoing, thereby casting undue aspersion not only on the entire electoral process and the almost thirty million voters who participated in it, but indeed the nation itself.

This was the second unsolicited and unwarranted diatribe by the American and British pair, the first being the denigrating joint missive authored by the same duo on March 21st 2015, precisely seven days prior to the election.
The said election has already occurred, but the repercussions from the historic event shall continue to generate reactions for many days, weeks, months, years and perhaps for all time.

    • TRUTH MASTER

Nonsense, When a so-called American envoy wrote an article in Washington Times calling GMB a religious bigot, where were you? You have just insulted Nigerians with your silly vituperation. Is it Obama who forced Nigerians to vote for change? Do the votes of Nigerians no longer count? Since the PDP has been winning (1999, 2003, 2011) did heavens fall? Get to terms with the reality: PDP is now the opposition party and that’s the way it is going to be for the next four years!

  • Abiodun Ojo

Olisa Metuh, from your statement you are saying that you are a spokesperson of Igbo people. Why? When Anambra and Akwa Ibom states threw away and deported the Yorubas, you did not talk. We Yorubas have documented that. Carry on-Igbo PDP spokesperson.

    • Nkuu

Shaaaaraaap. Yes he is the spokesman of Igbos. Live with other Nigerians in peace, form an Oduduwa, or start insurgency or shut the f&%#ck up!!!

      • Abiodun Ojo

  • TRUTH MASTER

It is totally wrong and absolutely unacceptable for anyone, whether an Oba or not, to threaten any ethnic group anywhere for whatever reasons. The Igbo, like any other tribe, have the right to vote for whomsoever they wish, and no one can deny them of that right.

I am glad that Nigerians have largely repudiated the Oba. That’s not how a monarch talks!

    • Datu Bugna

Even Tinubu and Fashiola that exude enormous political power in Lagos that can even dethrone the Oba if considered a nuisance to state development have not and will never even make such an inflammatory statement, How much more a salary Dependent Oba….Haba…..That guy needs to step out of that crown….

  • Femi T.

Nothing but freedom to speech and he’s entitled to that according to the law as long as he’s not exciting violence against Igbo. He is only reminding them lagos belongs to Yoruba people because Igbo have been laying unnecessary claim to Lagos, conferring cheiftaincy and saying Lagos is no man’s land. The Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani and any other tribe cannot go to the east and make such a claim. Its about time the king put them on notice.

    • Nkuu

Lagos is an non man’s land and a Nigerian state and city. Where was Oba of Yorubas in Lagos when mostly Igbos alongside other Nigerians liberated Logos and SW from the British?

Nigeria is a REPUBLIC. If Oba of Some Yoruba in Lagos want monarchy let him declare for ODUDUWA or start an insurgency. Before then, he must live & behave according to the Constitution of Nigeria or shut up his mouth.

      • Lagos is not a “no man’s land’…and pls get your history right about the british occupation in the south west. i was frustrated during my stay in anambra state and i was reminded at every opportunity that i don’t belong there. the constitution made provision for this kind of segregation to take place when we all provide “local govt of origin” certificate in nigerian higher institutions on admission and this reflects in the fees you pay and cost of living. even as an indigene you stand a better chance of gaining an admission in your own “state of origin”. The oba of lagos just spoke the mind of many Nigerians.
This is not in defence of the Oba of lagos but no one can make such claim in the east.

        • isioku

Mr. Emeralds, while I do not share the view that Lagos is a “no man’s land” traditionally and believe that the owners of the land should be respected, I challenge your comment on being chased out of Anambra. The problem with most Yorubas and some northerners is that they haven’t been to the East but they found themselves “competent” to pass off comments such as you have done or that Igbo land is not developed. An Igbo man would see that you prosper in his land. He would welcome you, give you his daughter to marry and even teach you how to trade if u are willing to learn. But if you can’t cope with the competition, don’t say you were chased out. The least tribalistic Nigerian is the Igbo and that is why they can comfortably make anywhere home and support the local community by creating wealth and building massive structures there. Asides Lagos, no yoruba city is more livable or developed as Eastern cities. Yorubas would come to Igbo villages and marvel at what we call “village” and would confess that in it would be called a “town” or “city” in the SW. The Oba’s statement must be condemned in its totality and whoever justifies any part of that statement or the circumstances that led to it is worse that the Oba. This same Oba collects a tribute of over 12M Naira every month from the same Igbos he wants drowned. But as a friend said, for every drowning Igbo man, there would be 3 Igbos selling life jackets to him!

          • i’m not supporting the oba because what he said is wrong totally! and you’re right about ibo villages being well developed but i disagree with the hospitable trait you stated here. i’m not passing off comments, i lived there and worked there long enough to know them. there was no competition of sort, they just don’t like you and the fact that you’re not “part of them” only makes them hate you more. your messanger in the office will refuse to go on errand for you because he feels you don’t have the authority to order him around in his own land!
i made lots of good friends but even the few that treated me right can’t make me forget the majority that treated me like an outcast.

          • ‘Yinka

You are just very right. An Igbo man gets angry discovering you speak his language unlike the hausas who will take time to teach you & appreciate you speaking his language. I reasonably lived in most part of Nigeria & I have seen height of hostility amongst Igbos. Igbo land is not a home for strangers/non-indigenes everyone knows this. You are getting exactly what you do to others in the east, that’s why Oba spoke that way.

          • ‘Yinka

Isioku, will you stop this rubbish, you guys are damn hostile in the east. I take side with the Oba of Lagos. He is very right, whatever noise you wanna make, go to your state & make the noise. It is only poor ones that litters around.

Lagos is combined of all ethnic groups and the if is have there own way of contributing positively to state ,Please lets stop talking about violence ,the oba is wrong and the Igbo knows lagos is a yoruba land ,let’s stop bringing up issues that are not acceptable

  • isioku

While I do not share the view that Lagos is a “no man’s land” traditionally and believe that the owners of the land should be respected. However, the constitution guarantees every Nigerian the fundamental right of living, voting and even contesting election anywhere in Nigeria if you have lived there for more 10 yrs. The comments that “Igbos should go an develop their homes ” are uncalled for and made out of ignorance. But as a friend said, even if the Oba’s curse comes to be, for every drowning Igbo man, there would be 3 Igbos selling life jackets to him! We need peace in this country and the Oba of Lagos should emulate enlightened Oba’s like the Iwujale of Ijebuland who made it abundantly clear to GEJ and GMB that Obas are not meant to take sides but to pray for whoever aspires to office.

    • Datu Bugna

The difference between PDP and APC is clear. APC is a coalition of Muslims.
APC stands for Muslim supremacy, while PDP is a thoroughly secular party.
