Patience Jonathan dismisses Police IG’s directive, urges Nigerians to protect votes

The First Lady, Patience Jonathan, has appealed to Nigerians to guard against manipulations by opposition parties during forthcoming elections.

She urged Nigerians to ensure their votes count during Saturday’s presidential polls, dismissing an earlier directive of the Inspector General of Police that voters leave polling units after casting their ballots.

Suleiman Abba, the Police IG, had warned that it would amount to people taking laws into their hands if voters stay back to protect their votes.

He assured the police will protect all votes, a pledge that has been rejected by opposition parties.

Speaking at the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Women Presidential Campaign in Enugu on Monday, Mrs. Jonathan said guarding the votes will eliminate all forms of rigging and make the elections credible.

The first lady urged the electorate to vote massively for President Goodluck Jonathan for the continuation of his transformation agenda.

“After voting on March 28, make sure you follow your votes till the end. Do not leave the arena until the counting ends. Vote wisely, you must vote according to your conscience,” the first lady warned.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a peaceful party. You cannot change what God has ordained.

“Jonathan’s government has encouraged exportation of food produce and eliminated corruption in the distribution of fertilizers.

“Nigeria is the largest in cassava production and PDP will make it to remain so. Jonathan has equipped our health care facilities and he has promised to do more,” she said.

Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State promised that the state will score highest in the votes for President Jonathan.

Mr. Chime, represented by his deputy, Ralph Nwoye, said the party had delivered dividends of democracy to citizens of the state.

The Deputy President of Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, commended the first lady for campaigning for the party in the states.

“We thank you for going round to campaign for the PDP as a whole and not only for the president’’, he said.

The National Woman Leader of the PDP, Amb. Kema Chikwe, urged the women of the state to come out en masse and vote for President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Jonathan has given us and now is the time for us to give him back. He gave us the opportunity for our voices to be heard’’, she said.

Others who spoke at the rally included the gubernatorial candidate in the state, Mr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and his Deputy, Mrs Cecilia Ezeilo, the Minister of Power, Prof Chinedu Nebo and the Special Adviser to President Jonathan on NEPAD, Amb Fidelia Njeze.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was attended by National Assembly members from the state, executive council members, and women groups from the state. (NAN)

Youths in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ekiti State, under the
aegis of Ekiti APC Youths Congress (EAYC) have demanded explanations
from leaders of the party over the spending of N25 million allegedly
released for the production of 250,000 copies of audio and video
recordings of the details of how the June 21, 2014 governorship
election was allegedly rigged in favour of Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Spokesperson of the party, Taiwo Olatubosun had said last week that
250,000 copies of the audio and video Compact Discs (CDs) were printed
    and distributed.

However, the APC youths in a release issued in Ado-Ekiti on Monday and
jointly signed by Mr Tope Ogunkuade and Comrade Tunji Adeleye,
Convener and Secretary respectively, said: “no single audio or video
    CD was produced.”

The youths said they have been reliably informed that a sum of N25
million was collected by Taiwo Olatubosun and three other leaders of
the party to produce the CDs.

They said they were alarmed that despite the huge sum of money
collected, no single CD of the alleged rigging of the election was
produced contrary to Olatunbosun’s claim that 250,000 copies were
    produced.What a shame

Amaechi has only 5 commissioners, 7 lawmakers left
    Ernest Chinwo in Port Harcourt

Rivers State Deputy Governor, Mr Tele Ikuru, has said he was deceived by his boss, Governor Chibuike Amaechi, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) and called on the people of the state to fight the APC which he described as an evil at the gate.

This came as the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Felix Obuah, boasted that about 16 members of the 32-member state House of Assembly and about 21 commissioners had abandoned Amaechi.

The duo spoke on Monday in Port Harcourt at a reception to formally receive the deputy governor into the PDP following his defection from APC on Sunday.

Ikuru said the content of the address announcing his resignation from the APC was the truth and from the depth of his heart, stressing that it was the truth, with no iota of pretence.

He added that he felt relieved with his defection as he has freed his conscience.

His words: “For the first time in 18 months, I slept well yesterday (Sunday) and I woke up hale and hearty this morning (Monday). This is because I have freed my conscience.

“What is happening in Rivers State today will haunt us if we allow it to pass. It will haunt our future generation if we allow it to go unchallenged. For the sake of posterity, we must fight the evil. If it takes our blood, so be it because there is an evil at the gate.”

He thanked the people of the state for resisting what he described as the “devilish onslaught”, adding that it would have been disastrous if they had folded their arms.

He said by his defection, he and his supporters were “upholding what is right and true”, and thanked the Rivers PDP Governorship Candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike, for rescuing the PDP from the “devilish onslaught”.

“He (Wike) stood against oppression and said, ‘if I perish, I perish’. He stood up and said the oppression against Rivers PDP will not stand.

Ikuru stated, “I must confess, I was deceived. I was told APC is a new order but it is all lies. It is just about the ambition of one man. God bless Nigeria; God bless Rivers State; God bless Wike.

“Let the statement be made loud and clear; for every one vote they get, we must have 200 votes. Come out with Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). Vote for President Goodluck Jonathan and from Saturday, Rivers State must have peace. We are working to deliver this party and the state.”

While receiving Ikuru back to the PDP, Rivers PDP Chairman, Mr Felix Obuah, boasted that about half the number of members of the state House of Assembly and two-thirds of Amaechi’s commissioners were as good as in the PDP.

Prominent yoruba leaders refused voting for APC.

Facts are emerging on why prominent Yoruba leaders have vowed not to vote for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd.), in the March 28 presidential elections.

Prominent Yoruba leaders and groups, including the two factions of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPF), the Afenifere Renewal Group and individual Yoruba leaders have sent in a flurry of support and endorsement of the candidature of incumbent President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

Sources close to the pan-Yoruba cultural group, Afenifere, have blamed the leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the woes that befell the South-West region in the present administration, especially as it concerns the loss of the Speakership of the House of Representatives.

One of the sources claimed it was Asiwaju Bola Tinubu that sponsored current Speaker, Aminu Bello Tambuwal, against the only Yoruba candidate to the post, Mrs. Mulikat Akande.

“The truth is that it was Tinubu’s backing of Tambuwal that eventually tipped the scale against the Yoruba nation. Because of that, the Yorubas are nowhere in the pecking order of this government. We are not the president, we are not the vice, we are not in the Senate and we are not in the House of Representatives. How do we support someone so selfish that he has to sell the privileges of the Yoruba nation to outsiders?” the source, who does not want to be named, said.

He went on to list other alleged sins of Tinubu and was certain that no Yoruba person worth his heritage would support anything projected by the man that is also popularly called the Jagaban.

According to the source, “The truth is that Tinubu has practically usurped the economy of Yoruba’s richest state. As we speak, the economy of Lagos is Tinubu and Tinubu is the economy of Lagos. We believe in equity and fairness and we are convinced Tinubu does not represent this.”

The source added that the position of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as vice president
