President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to stop celebrating people with ill-gotten wealth in order to discourage corruption in the country.

Mr. Jonathan, who participated in the Presidential Debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group on Sunday in Abuja, said Nigerians should change their attitude towards primitive accumulation of wealth.

He said that his government has introduced e-payment system in the country to stop the flow of raw cash and diversion of funds to reduce embezzlement.

The President said the method his administration has used in fighting corruption was prevention, strengthening of institutions and re-orientation of the people.

“Nigerians should change their mentality and condemn people with ill-gotten wealth.

“What we see is a situation where somebody gets wealth illegally and goes to his village and they give him a chieftaincy title.

“In the government circle, we used the IPPIS; no more use of raw cash; it cuts across all sectors and in that case you stop people from stealing public fund.”

According to Mr. Jonathan, the government has tackled irregularities that characterised the supply of fertiliser to Nigerian farmers.

On corruption, the presidential candidate of National Conscience Party, Martins Onovo, said that no meaningful development would be achieved if corruption was not tackled.

Contributing, Chekwas Okorie, the presidential candidate of the United Progressives Party, said that the fight against corruption must start from the top and that leaders must lead by personal example.

“Assets declaration will be compulsory and made public and should be reviewed yearly.

“Security votes must be tied to only security matters and must be accounted for

“Immunity must be limited to civil matters and all criminals must be tried.’’

Oluremi Sonaiya, the presidential candidate of KOWA Party, said that public office should be made less attractive by making the holders to earn normal salaries.

Deceitful Joe… talk with all sides of his mouth. I think this guy still believes Nigerians r f0000ls

  • taewo

Mr. Jonathan, how about the billions of Naira you’re distributing to bribe the electorates? Was it your salary?

  • Babawale Akinola

President Jonathan we have heard you. But I have two questions for you. (i) What is the source of the $12m Mr. Arthur Eze your friend and sponsor of your election campaign gave you and your church? (ii) How come you awarded close to $500m inflated military contract to your friend and sponsor Mr. Arthur Eze? (iii) You just sue 7 billion Naira to bribe the Yoruba thug Gani Adams to help you cause insecurity in Yoruba land-doesnt that contradict what you are just saying here? Goodluck Jonathan you cannot deceive anyone. Start packing your load from Aso Rock. We Nigerian voters are tired of you. You are corrupt and incompetent.

  • akyn

How do we classify the farmland, measuring 95.88 hectares, is located at the Cadastral Zone, Aviation Village, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council?

  • Bambam

I love what Chekwas Okorie said..corruption must be tackled and it must start from the top..assests must be declared..and no president should say he doesn’t give a damn to do say like JonaTAN..and in the case of Nigeria the declared assets must be reviewed yearly..plus there should be no immunity for criminal cases only for civil cases..we need to halt the madness troubling us as a nation!!

  • babatope

What about the billions jonathan is sharing to OPC and other militants. When you stop giving such money Nigerians won’t have any reason to praise them. Liar as president. We don enter one chance from OBJ

    • richkid

Stop answering my name TOPE. I don’t easily get decieved. GEJ is a saint

      • babatope

If it’s your name use it. Why using fake name here. Anyway, since “you don’t get easily deceived” then jona cannot deceive you. Enjoy

  • Acosta

    GEJ till 2019

    • Njoku

Is that all you have to say ?

  • True Nigerian

This President is lost; he has no conscience left in his soul. Such an admonition coming from a President that has stolen Nigeria dry either directly or through his aides (Diezani Alison-Madueke, etc). A president that acquired $500m land whilst in office? A president that who gives a bribe of N7b to his own religious constituency (Christianity) – the corruption of the church. A president that sold OPL 245 for a pittance in order to take a cut from the bloody proceed of a mindlessly corrupt deal; a president who praised the number of private jets that his cronies packed in Kenya, despite many of them being a proceed of illegal deals? The President that flew $9m cash into a foreign country in the name of arms deal and in a private jet of a bishop? Can you beat that.

Yes, Nigerians should condemn people with ill-gotten wealth; that is exactly why Jonathan should be disgraced out of office on Saturday. Enough of the eyesore.

    • Tunde

Mr True Nigerian. One cannot exhaust the list with regards to Jonathan and corruption. He is a world record holder in that regard

  • Concerned

GEJ and your administration – we have stopped celebrating you. Now leave the room!

  • richkid

What could have Nigeria been without you! GEJ is the best we ever had. Pls continue

  • Preco01

Janus Jonathan at his lying best

  • Dawood

The gall of this moral leper of a man. If it were not for him and his fellow looters, Nigeria would be where Singapore is today. He and his administration are the poster children for corruption and ill-gotten wealth. Ole oshi!

  • Guguru

Another act of laughable impunity. Jonathan looks Nigeria in the eye and lies to its face because Jonathan actually hates Nigeria. Jonathan is on a mission to destroy the nation that ensured he had no shoes as a child. His hatred for Nigeria has been burning for so long and now that he has the chance to make Nigeria pay for its sins against him, he is doing so in the most diabolical ways possible. Nigeria needs to realize that this is a man whose mind is severely sick. How is Jonathan destroying Nigeria?

    1. He has encouraged corruption as a way of life in Nigeria. He can barely tell you that corruption is evil.

    2. He allowed crude oil theft to reach dizzying heights unabated.

    3. He deliberately allowed terrorists to enter and take control of parts of Nigeria. He said he treated them with kid gloves.

    4. He has lied in his 2012 independent day speech, lied about how many jobs his administration created in 2013, lied about the state of polio in Nigeria in 2014.

    5. He has caused division everwhere he has visited—from the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, to the PDP, and between Christians and Muslims.

    6. He has allowed his followers to make heretical assertions—-Okupe said he is like Jesus Christ and his wife said he is the Messiah.

    7. He has turned many of Nigeria’s friends against Nigeria—United States, Morocco, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, South Africa, etc.

    8. He has turned the Nigeria Military into a glorified Boy’s Scout.

    9. He has refused to go after missing money that could help the weak and the poor.

    10. He has openly supported the rigging of elections by refusing to prosecute known election riggers.

  • Omotolaaraujo

He will not be gone soon enough.

  • musa aliyu

Then he should tell FFK and D. Okups to stop defending his brazen day light robbery!

  • emmanuel

PGEJ you a blessing to us

  • uduak akpan

Thank you Mr President you are the best man for the job.By God grace you will win the election

  • uzo

PGEJ you are the man to take us forward till 2019

  • favourtalk

After many bribes he gave to all politicians in nigeria, change is here because GEJ is the chief of failure

Is this not the same Dumbo Dumbo who has robbed the country blind, and has been criss-crossing the country energetically bribing people and groups in US dollars believing he will get re-elected as a result? It’s only a few days, and we’ll see who has the last laugh.

These APC desperadoes are the bad wind rubbing on the good ship of this nation.

I am 100% sure that the introduction of e-payment system in the country to stop the flow of raw cash and diversion of funds to reduce embezzlement will go a long way in sanitizing the system.

  • felicia jones

Apart from being corrupt, he is a social misfit

  • Lemmuel Odjay

We are not talking about petty thieves here, Jonathan. Who are those drilling large holes in the Nigerian oil ship and siphoning hundreds of thousands of barrels of our oil daily on “twenty-four-seven” basis for years now while you kept looking the other way? What about those PDP contractors they call oil marketers to whom licences are doled out to import refined oil while our refineries and petrochemical plants are left to rust away? They call their intransigence against the nation something like “oil subsidy” that has created this deep black hole through which hundreds of billions of our money is hoovered away to you-know-where, oh President Jonathan. That is the kind of money we are talking about, not revenue on VAT, etc little fries steal. They’ve stolen us into a drunken stupor under your watch and you have let them go because you do not believe that stealing is corruption. Recently some of them returned to splash some of that money (our money, actually) during your campaign fund raising campaign. I noticed you were beaming from ear to ear during one of the occasions. Somebody please give me change here, biko…

  • August January

Even when Jonathan said it was wrong for Buhari to have jailed Jim Nwobodo for “little” corruption. Unfortunately, some mumu will buy into this last minute pretentious hatred for corruption by Jonathan, who’s only surpassed in corruption by Abacha. Corrupt thief!

  • Joe

Nigerians should change their mentality and condemn people with ill-gotten wealth like Johnathan, Ngozi, Madueke… etc
