PDP commends Jonathan for reducing electricity tariff

FILE PHOTO: Former President, Goodluck Jonathan

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for the 50 percent reduction in electricity tariff in the country.

The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission had on Tuesday a 50 per cent reduction in electricity tariff beginning from April 1.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Wednesday said the reduction, which came two months after the cut in the pump price of petrol shows the President “as a listening and compassionate leader who has the interest and wellbeing of his citizens at heart”.

The party said the development has shown that President Jonathan is always in touch with the people and issues that have direct bearing on their economic and social lives, adding that the reduction was “a direct result of meticulous application of deliberate policies which took full cognizance of the impact of high electricity cost on the citizens and the economy”.

“This reduction in electricity tariff has further strengthened the business-friendly environment created by the Jonathan administration which led to the unprecedented thriving of the private sector, our emergence as the largest economy in Africa and one of the fastest growing in the world”, the party said.

The PDP noted that the step would not only translate into better living standard for Nigerians but also increase the nation’s GDP as more investments are expected to spring up with more employment and business opening for Nigerians.

Stating that the nation will continue to witness the yields of populist policies of the Jonathan administration, the PDP urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to ensure full implementation of the Transitional Electricity Market policy, which is designed to ensure an efficient cost reflectivity that would guarantee cheaper electric service in the country.

The party therefore urged Nigerians to ensure that this positive trend is sustained and consolidated by coming out enmasse to vote for President Jonathan and other PDP candidates in the March 28 and April 11 elections.

    • tundemash

Mumu.. …. how can Dumbo dictate price of service he does not give. Did you guys not claim onre of his achievements is liberalisation of the power sector and that he has sold NEPA to investors so how can govt. dictate to private investors what to charge for their services?
A roguish govt should be thankful that the people they govern do not have the ability to think !

  • Segun

Thank u Mr president. U are a president with human heart.

      • segun

KEEP SUFFERING AND SMILING…..IF YOU DON’T KNOW POWER SUPPLY IS OUR BASIC RIGHT..

        • inuwa kate

Definitely it is our basic right but u refused to acknowledge the fact that before this govt came to address it, it has been a sector with decades of decay and neglect.

U should be happy that improvements have come on and hopes are rising that soonest there steady power supply to the country.

          • segun

WE’VE BEING HEARING THAT FOR HOW LONG NOW.. .I DON’T SEE ANY IMPROVEMENT AND YOU MUST KNOW PRIVATIZATION IS NOT AN ACHIEVEMENT…PROVIDE STEADY POWER SUPPLY AND STOP GIVING EXCUSES AFTER ALL HE PROMISED US AFTER HE WAS ELECTED.

  • udemeobong

Aha! So it was Mr. President not the NEPA Oga? Before it was Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) who said they have reviewed the system and decided to act so. They did not mention that it was Oga Jonathan that gave them order to do so. Now PDP are openly saying Jonathan gave the order now. So, my question is. why lying. Simple admit as part of your election Bonanza that knows no end.

    • Victor Gee

Is NERC reporting to who? Maybe u. Or u appointed them? These APC rats chaiiii

      • udemeobong

Read knews and stop follow follow like blind man. I know some of you don´t read logics into and out of what is going on there, cause tribalism, god fatherism, illiteracy, poverty and inferiority complex ave all doomed you to always seeing such things moves as the best. Where was he, when he first came to power? Or is it now that he will start making changes? Born to be ignorant of the device of the devil. The country fit you well well. Go ahead. When your tired, you will walk through the desert to migrate to europe or trafick drugs. Now all is well as long as yoou are not fed up being fooled around.

      • udemeobong

I am neither APC NOR PDP. That is your problem, cause that is the gimick of politicising the system on party line whereby good governance is trampled upon with your help of course. Read knews, I keep enlghtening you now. DO you know what happened in Mauritius? I bet you don´t know.

  • Anene Mercy

Oh what a president that listens to the feeling s of the masses. Thank u sir.

  • Victor Gee

That’s why I keep suporting u. U are a democrat and not a dictator, u feel the impulse and opinion of the masses. Thank u Mr president.

    • August January

Really a pity that so many Nigerians still remain mumu like you.

    • tundemash

Mumu ….. how can Dumbo dictate price of service he does not give. Did you guys not claim onre of his achievements is liberalisation of the power sector and that he has sold NEPA to investors so how can govt. dictate to private investors what to charge for their services?
A roguish govt should be thankful that the people they govern do not have the ability to think !

  • Etang Chris

Oga Jona u are really a guru. After March 28, APC will be asking how manage. U have dealt with most of the disturbing public needs of Nigeria.
Insurgence, fuel price and now electricity tariff.

    • trutalk

Oh my God you are so senseless. Please tell me there is sarcasm in your comment. You are telling me that 2 weeks before election, he has lowered electricity tariff, started war on Boko Haram, and commissioned power plants all because he’s a thoughtful and hard working president? Please be reasonable all this is to persuade the simple minded, unfortunately like you, to vote for him and ignore the last years of inaction. Someone from the outside looking in would easily be able to see all that is being done to Nigerians but GEJ and PDP know that there are a good number of people like you that cannot see this and will fall for the trickery. Even if you hate Buhari you cannot possibly think that GEJ is the answer, open your eyes and really ask yourself, is this a well meaning president?

      • inuwa kate

If u are not an empty e-rat who knows nothing about governance, u would have agreed that u can’t lay foundation today r plant a seed today and it germinates immediately.

These are plans that are now maturing. Are u saying the energy plants were built over night or two weeks to election? Why are APC rats not reasoning?

        • AJ

I really do hope some sarcasm was intended here. If not, one must ask if you are for real!

        • Trutalk

Luckily I have depth in my thinking and not shallowness. Why is your man suddenly feel the need to plant seeds and put them on public display weeks to an election he fears he may lose. If he had indeed been planting seeds the last few years, we would have seen some small harvest. No b so? He wouldn’t be doing photo shoot here and there pretending like commissioning a power plant is actually making a difference to the power issues we have. But of course such silliness convinces people like you who believe he has done no wrong, can do no wrong, will do no wrong. You really think this latest display of action is because he’s thinking about the people of Nigeria? If you cannot see the people shitting on you right in front of you and can even defend them, then by Gods grace I hope to shit on you one day and may my children shit on your children. Wake up!

        • Chukwudi Boniface

You are so backward in your thinking. What tree(s) were planted that took 6 years to grow and now 6 weeks to mature?? Use your head bro.

    • tundemash

Mumu …. how can Dumbo dictate price of service he does not give. Did you guys not claim onre of his achievements is liberalisation of the power sector and that he has sold NEPA to investors so how can govt. dictate to private investors what to charge for their services?
A roguish govt should be thankful that the people they govern do not have the ability to think !

  • Etang Chris

Nigeria still needs u sir. We don’t want a military dictator whose word is final. God will see u through.

  • inuwa kate

I will face NEPA people now. Na me and them. They charge me so high, thank u Mr president.

  • Maryam

          • August January

Fraudulent president! Why did he not do it last year if he’s really a friend of the masses? Now 2 weeks to election, he suddenly remembered federal government could do something even when they had claimed that it had been privatised and that the federal govt could no longer determine anything relating to billing. Awon ole! Awon opuro! What of if the election had taken place in February? Honestly, ode ni o!

          • oluwaseyi mayowa

the ones he had done before are you able to even see and acknowledge it when you are blinded and myopic

GEJ doing pointless things as usual

    • onyekaokorie

Mumu, the wiping of boko haram is pointless abi? The reduction in pumprice is also pointless.

      • Samadani

The fuel is not even available at the old rate except in Abuja and Lagos. Likewise, the electricity is not also there. So how could you reduce the price of a commodity that is unavailable. Something is amiss. Diar is God ooooooooo!!!

who is fooling who? gej is hoping to win the election and reverse the reduction afterward…it is over for gej and pdp

    • onyekaokorie

Do u have any fact to back this ur APC allegation? Or u think he is Buhari the dictator.

      • ODOFIN, Lagos

is it today that the tariff was increased and people started protesting? why is it that it was reduced 10 days to the election? Intelligent people will know that such reduction is temporary and political esp. in view of economic hardship facing businesses including NEPAs and Nigerian masses

        • onyekaokorie

Dont u know that it is some factors that necessitate govt actions. The govt would have had informed research in line with the provisions of the law before coming with the tariff reduction.

          • ODOFIN, Lagos

You make mock of yourself the way you are sounding…I leave you with your fate

      • tundemash

Is NEPA sold to private investors or not ? So how can Dumbo dictate to same investors what to charge for their services ?

  • Maitama Tambari

Deception! Deception!! Deception!!! Voodoo economists. How could a Regulatory Commission who is supposed to regulate electricity supply and prices amongst Distributing Companies, supposedly a private sector market, the regulator would then slash the electricity tariff by fifty percent? Where is the market forces? So Distributing Companies have been cheating Nigerians with excess tariff of fifty percent? Or it is election, desperate election GIMICK. From November to February, CBN had devalued the Naira by forty percent, which means for every one Naira, Nigerians are losing forty kobos. Do the arithmetic for Distributing Companies that borrowed to finance the Companies. If they are loosing forty kobos to a Naira, how could they loose fifty kobos now on the price they charge on supplying electricity to the consumers? Nigerians, is it logical? Is it logical to loose forty kobos in foreign exchange and then loose additional fifty kobos to the price of your product and the causes of these calamities, PDP who is congratulating their Leadership for this horrid voodoo economics. WE BELIEVE CHANGE! YES WE CAN IN NIGERIA. ALI MUST GO. YES JONATHAN MUST GO.

Rogue government are fortunate the people they govern are amazingly stup1d !

  • DTaj

Reduction of tariff for darkness! No light since last Thursday. Thoughtless decision! After selling the power assets and companies, and the buyers taken US dollar loans (which is now costlier due to the terrible Naira exchange rate), and now a bogus 50% tariff reduction! In a privatized setting! These PDP and Jonathanian clowns think most Nigerians are as daft as they are!

  • MIB

What concerns FG with the price of electricity after privatization …..?

  • taiwo

For the first time in Nigeria we have a working president with milk of human kindness,a humane, gentle and unassuming personality. The future mandela of our great nation

    • Saydo Shan

Wat U hav is an amateur con artist. Every1 has already seen thru him, moreso his pple. R U aware dat as at now, there is PDP and PDPigs. D PDP’S are the ones in the party who have fully realised dat dis guy and his cronies are felonious scoundrels. The PDPigs are the Hyenas and the Pigs, the one’s like Olisa Menu who like the utterly decadent rot. Pigs and Hyenas eat even rotten carcass.

The PDP’S are the ones who r in d party and have benefitted well. Nonetheless, they r genuinely working and praying for the defeat of GEJ on March 28. And bliv U me, PDP’S are spread all over Nigeria. For real, they r even in Bayelsa. And I mean key leaders. Do U know why dis is s? Bcos d state of decay and rot is too much for them, their conscience is truly affected.

The thing going for GMB is his very clean personality. He never had anything to do with corruption and will never have anything to do with corruption.

THIS WILL NEVER MAKE NIGERIANS TO VOTE THIS DECEIVER AND HIS PARTY PDP TO OFFICE AGAIN. NIGERIANS HAVE ALREADY DECIDED FOR CHANGE. THE 50% REDUCTION IN TARIFF IS JUST A DECEIT. NIGERIANS EVEN PREFER 50% IMPROVEMENT IN POWER SUPPLY THAN THIS DECEITFUL REDUCTION. WE NEED LEADERS THAT DON’T DECEIVE US NOW.
