A former president of the Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Aliyu Wabba, has been elected president of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

Mr. Wabba was elected early Saturday at the rescheduled delegates’ conference in Abuja.

The conference ended this morning.

Mr. Omar, a member of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, succeeded Adams Oshiomhole of the Textile Workers Union.

Mr. Oshiomhole is currently the governor of Edo State.

Congratulations, my friend Wabba. On a serious note, I hope your tenure would not turn out to be business as usual, where the country is virtually dragged along workers’ picket lines there to remain “indefinitely.” That line of action is now dated, wasteful and unprofitable. If you think hard enough, you’d find better ways of engaging your employer than by embarking on perpetual strike actions. What about adopting the old Nigerian saying: “sofrey, sofrey catch monkey.” You must start by making your employer believe that you are not only a fellow Nigerian as he but his friend as well. Like “the Police is your friend” kind of approach. He pays your wages after all, and by tradition no Nigerian government would ‘relax” and feel safe when its “servants” resort to “anarchy,” if you understand me well enough. (ehnn, wait o! you know who you dey talk to? who are u re? I go teach you say na me dey pay your salary…) That is the culture of impunity we have adopted from military government, the largest of Animal Farms. You hear that undemocratic language spoken even by commoners in the streets on being provoked by fellow commoners. The measure of your success will be determined first by how much distance you put between labour and strike actions, followed by your ability to cleanse your house of lazy, unproductive and equally corrupt members sitting in office desks and the wisdom and patience required to deal with an uncaring, inept and corrupt government. I do not envy you. But I could pray that God should grant you the wisdom and patience to deal with your employer, Amen.

I hope your tenure will not limit itself to fuel increase like your predecessors, NLC remain the most outstand group that can protect our nation, it should stand out in every aspect of our life and economy; pressing hard on national issues such as legislation, corruption and misgovernance, infrastructural development, sustainable democracy and so on
