Following his confirmation as a minister, Wednesday, by the Nigerian Senate, Musiliu Obanikoro, a former junior defence minister, has said he holds no grudge against All Progressives Congress Senators from Lagos who stood against his nomination.

Mr. Obanikoro was reappointed by President Goodluck Jonathan to pacify him after losing his bid to become the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, gubernatorial candidate in Lagos.

His nomination came after he was named in a leaked tape as the principal actor in Ekiti State election rigging in 2014.

The Nigerian government has refused to investigate the claims.

On Wednesday, the Nigeria Senate approved Mr. Obanikoro’s nomination after repeated deferments, despite protests from senators from Lagos State, Mr. Obanikoro’s home state.

The Senate, presided by its president, David Mark, also ignored protests from other opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, lawmakers who moved to stop the clearance over the Ekiti scandal.

The Senate allowed Mr. Obanikoro, himself a former Senator, to “take a bow and go”, without answering questions, a privilege reserved for former federal lawmakers.

APC lawmakers responded by walking out of the session in protest.

Speaking via his Twitter handle, @Mobanikoro Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Obanikoro said the position of the Lagos senators strengthened Nigeria’s democracy.

“I want to use this medium to express my profound gratitude to my distinguished colleagues in the Senate for their kind support,” he said. “I am particularly grateful to the President of the Senate and other principal officers representing the Senate majority and minority.”

He added, “I have no ill feelings towards the Senators from Lagos who stood against me. Their position has amplified the strength of our democracy.”

“In times like these, we learn that there is no winner or loser and that our shared hopes are greater than the politics that divide us,” Mr. Obanikoro said.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, also named in the Ekiti election scandal, congratulated the new minister.

“Congratulations to @MObanikoro as he is confirmed as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the National Assembly,” he wrote via his @GovAyoFayose handle.

      Congrats, Koro!

  • Akiika

What a shame! is this democracy? i will welcome the military or whoever to sack these bunch of rogues. This is shameful, Koro that should be under trial for rigging election is crookedly confirmed as a senator? Shame on David Mark, Jonathan and all of the senators involved. You all will bungle this democracy, we surely are not ripe for it.

  • abc

Hahaha i dey laugh. What a waste of time and resources, minister for 2 months during this valueless naira. I believe Koro will not even recover what he spends by pacifying the corrupt senators to clear him. Mr. Koro got it so expensive this time around.

Can someone please enlighten me? How did Nigeria, with all our educated and westernised elites get to this stage? Where the those who clearly should be in jail never to be seen for decades are lording it over the majority, without any fear of contradiction or accountability? What is going on? Even if Obanikoro is innocent of the allegations, the least he should have done is to defend himself in front of a Panel of Public Enquiry. How can we just fold our arms and pretend that everything is fine? Incredible!

  • Onasanya hakeem

The second coming of Obanikoro, the credibility of the next election is at stake…. But Wat did you expect GEJ to do, Obanikoro was a good boy at Ekiti and one good turn deserves another

  • Layo

Jonathan is to blame for all the mess. He is the one with thugs, killers, gay, rapist, thieves, cult etc. Didinrin.

I JUST FEEL SORRY FOR JONATHAN, JONATHAN IS USING GBAGBOS PLAYBOOK. JONATHAN WILL BE JAILED FOR MANY YEARS.
DAVID MARK WHO HAS BELIZE CITIZENSHIP WILL BE ARRESTED BEFORE HE GETS TO BELIZE.
FFK WILL BE PROSECUTED COS HE WONT BE ABLE TO USE THAT BRITISH PASSPORT.
THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IS KEENLY WATCHING THIS JONA DRAMA.
I AM CONCERNED ABOUT JONA,HIS ADVISERS ARE PUSHING HIM TO DEATHEND….

  • Omooba Adekunle Orafidiya

Many congratulations to Mr. Obanikoro. I don’t know why PT is making a song and a dance of this useless and meaningless so-called Ekiti Rigging Tape. What was done about the hard evidence of unethical communication (as evidenced by MTN call logs) between dirty-looking, semi-literate (IN)Justice Ayo Salami and chieftains of defunct Action Congress of Nigeria on the one hand and the party’s legal reps on the other; in the period leading up to, during and immediately after the judgements in the Ekiti and Osun Gubernatorial Appeals were procured? These APC criminals should give us a break. Those useless APC lawbreakers who staged a walk-out should be permanently kept out of the hallowed Senate chamber. Bloody hypocrites.

    • Antonini

@Omooba. Bet me your lineage will soon be wiped out.

  • Spoken word

In a sane country people like david Mark and obanikoro will be in jail.

    • Emeka

Be reasonable and objective- what ground would your so called snr nation it country jail them? ” Take a bow and leave” has been a tradition for ex-senators without injunction or a clause to that.

The issue of leaked tape indicting Koro and co, if it all be true as said by the defeated party, why they wait for the govt enquiry instead of heading straight to court and claim their victory. Or is it done so in a sane country.

      • Spoken word

If koro and David Mark are the leaders you look up to then you deserve any shit you get from this govrnment

        • Emeka

am not complaining about any problem in this government cause its an accumulated decay- which even the so-called change that Buhari, Tinubu and co preach is still largely a mirage, cause in sum they are part and parcel of NIGERIA PROBLEM. Therefore, you dont need an automatic change cause it is elusive with all the present crop of leaders.

  • SAM .A

Musiliu Obanikoro , it is a matter of time you will give account , on that day Mark will be seating down in chains , you will not be able to bow & go , u will not only talk but sing, it will not be Tea Party , u ,Fayose, Omisore & Aliyu Momo attended in Ekiti . You will give account of what led to Torture & chaining of a Child ,Adamu Koli for 5months. Your judgement day is close.

Wail for the Verdict of the Almighty!

  • Johnson Omale

If mark could do this to Nigeria, I doubt if coming election would be fair. Where are Nigerians of good moral? It’s time to stand up against mark.

  • Adeboye Bakare

koro dis is time 4 u to polish ur name, dnt use dis golden opportunity to oppress opposition. a word is sufficient 4 a wise

Jonathan is the enemy of Jonathan. As if his uncontrollable wife is not enough problem why did he brought criminals like Okupe, Fani kayode, Clark, Koro, Fayose. These people have turned him into an opposition leader. Kindergarden president has shown it all

  • Bunduma Mohammed
