Ivory Coast court jails ex-first lady 20 years over poll violence

Simone Gbagbo

An Ivorian court on Tuesday in Abidjan sentenced former first lady, Simone Gbagbo, to 20 years in prison, for her role in a 2011 post-election violence.

Rodrigue Dadje, her lawyer, said the trial verdicts were announced after nine hours of deliberations by the jury.

He said Gbagbo was tried alongside 82 other allies of ex-President Laurent Gbagbo.

“This is purely a political decision to keep her out of the political game,” he said.

He said they were being tried in a case, in which more than 3,000 people, were killed.

Mr. Dadje said Bruno Ble, who headed the elite Republican Guard, and former Navy Chief, Vagba Faussignaux, were both jailed for 20 years, while the former president’s son got a shorter sentence.

“The jury members retained all the charges against her, including disturbing the peace, forming and organising armed gangs and undermining state security,” Mr. Dadje said. “It’s a shame.”

Dadje said the sentence handed down by the six-member jury, was longer than the 10 years requested by the state prosecutor.

He said the former first lady’s rights, were also suspended for 10 years.

The lawyer said Pascal Affi-N’Guessan, President of Gbagbo’s Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) party, was also handed an 18-month suspended sentence.

The ex-first lady said she had been insulted and humiliated by the prosecution, which, she said, had failed to prove her guilt. She said she told her part of the truth.

“I’m prepared to forgive,” she said ” I forgive because, if we don’t forgive, this country will burn.”

Patience Jonathan is inciting violence by her utterances in recent time. If you are yet to read or hear about her requests at her campaign stumps, where she asked her supporters to stone anyone that talks about the change mantra of the APC, then I put you on notice. These types of utterances often snowball into pre or post election violences among less educated Africans. So, in the event that the upcoming elections in Nigeria result into a violence of any proportions, it is fair to bring justice to Patience Jonathan, her husband, and many of their coteries like Ayo Fayose et al, who precipitated such barbaric reaction by their unguarded utterances

    • Ola

if everyone is relating this to mama pee then it is bcus its natural for her to end up that way

    • Festuso

Madam Patience told the crowd during campaign to “stone anybody that calls for CHANGE”. So, why should they not relate Mrs Gbagbo’s experience to her. She too deserves to get her own sentence if anybody dies through her incitement!

  • Wähala

I hope the illiterate Lady Hippopatience can get somebody to read & interpret this sentence to her. She is on record for causing the death of a policeman in Rivers State, any further drops of blood in Calabar or anywhere else will be on her illiterate head and translates to longer time in prison. Fat piece of sh*t… Senseless drum-wife of a drunk. Clowns!

    • Ola

      mama pee

    • Mama Pee

Chai! Chai! there is God oo

  • amazing2012

Mama food I hope you de hear !?

  • Omooba Adekunle Orafidiya

Meanwhile, useless, illiterate, senile certificate forger, perjurer and coup plotter Buhari, who incited violence and caused the death of some Youth Corpers after he lost the 2011 poll is a Presidential candidate around here. Nigeria is, indeed, a joke!!!

    • Sword of Damocles

You feel better now after your incoherent rant? see no evil, hear no evil, EVIL!!!

    • Citizen

and meanwhile your clueless coward master could not prosecute a coup plotter who incited violence that lead to death of innocent people

    • Festuso

Something will also have to be done about you….for inciting violence in the polity in Nigeria. Do you know how many innocent people could perish through your inciting comments? You never have anything meaningful to contribute. Your time will soon come!

  • Jerry

Forgiveness in the name of National reconciliation should have been the guiding principles.

    • Citizen

thats the usual african mentality; the common man is always sympathetic to the elite but doesnt care about the milliions of ordinary people destroyed in the hands of the tyrants.. if a common man was prosecuted or even killed u will not be talking of reconciliation..so sad

  • Titi

eyaa, from Nija we will send u a great company

  • sammyctu ode

Same fate is awaiting the stark illiterate patience jonathan after May 29th because she has committed the same crimes like this lady.

  • Isi Agwo

Next to be sent to prison will be Bokohari. While in Kirikiri, he will finally seat for his NECO/SSCE – at last. Probably the oldest man to seat for O/L anywhere.

  • Rommel

I hope the Jonathans are listening

  • Philip Musa

meanwhile the illiterate/junta/BH apologist/coup stager who cannot produce his school cert; and who proclaimed violence (bleeding baboons) after the 2011 elections still has supporters in Nigeria? Goes to show the depth of these mongrel supporters

    • Jujubeans

Enough of this “bleeding baboons” nonsense! You GEJites are like your principal and Mama Peace who fail to comprehend “cause” and “effect”… A key skill used in THINKING. Warning that the nation will burn if politicians fail to do the right thing is very different to inciting people to violence which is asking for people to be stoned, stabbed, burned etc. ok?

  • Otile

Can this kind of justice be meted to Imam Buhari?
