Obasanjo visits Ebola-hit countries, seeks support for victims

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has visited Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia in solidarity with the West African nations worst hit by the Ebola Virus Disease.

Mr. Obasanjo arrived in Guinea Conakry on Thursday February 19, and was received by President Alpha Conde at the Presidential Palace.

Speaking during a meeting with the Guinean President, Mr. Obasanjo said he was in Conakry to commiserate with the people over the losses suffered due to the Ebola outbreak and to congratulate the nation’s leadership for its efforts in containing the disease.

“True friendship is tested in times of trials,” the former President said.

“I am here because this is a trying time for my brother and the people of Guinea.

“I commiserate with you and also congratulate you for the way and manner you have handled this crisis.”

Mr. Obasanjo reiterated his commitment to seeking international assistance for countries affected by the Ebola crisis.

“Let me assure you that I am personally involved in mobilising support for the affected countries,” he said.

“I have been working closely with the African Union chairperson to raise funds from the private sector in Africa to support efforts to eradicate Ebola.”

The former Nigerian President said although Guinea and the other affected countries have reasonably contained the disease, it is important for global partners to provide assistance to victims and find ways to ensure such outbreaks are avoided in the future.

“I will continue to sensitise the international community on the need to support victims of the disease and to assist the affected countries to recover from this epidemic.

“The children who have been orphaned by the virus will require support to make it through childhood.”

Responding, President Conde said Mr. Obasanjo’s visit came as no surprise to him even though other global leaders are reluctant to visit the Ebola-hit countries.

“You have always been a Pan-Africanist who takes the issues of Africa very seriously,” Mr. Conde said.

“Your visit here, therefore, comes as no surprise to me and it reinforces the friendship we have shared over the years.”

“At the moment, there are critical areas in which I would kindly request your urgent intervention.

“First, the affected countries will need debt relief from the international community.

“Second, there is urgent need for a Marshall plan to help the countries recover from the disaster.

“We also need assistance to strengthen our health and education sectors to effectively deal with disasters of this kind.

“I ask these not only as the President of the Republic of Guinea but also as the Chairman of the Mano River Union.”

Mr. Obasanjo gave his assurances of seeking support for the countries.

“You can count on me and my good offices whenever you need my intervention,” he told Mr. Conde.

In Sierra Leone, Mr. Obasanjo met with President Ernest Bai Koroma at his Goderich residence in Freetown where he lamented the effect of Ebola on the people of Sierra Leone at a time the country’s rapid development was taking off.

Mr. Obasanjo praised the efforts made by the government of Sierra Leone and development partners in containing the disease and promised to further garner international support for the affected countries as they deal with and recover from the outbreak.

In his remarks, President Koroma thanked Mr. Obasanjo for his statesmanship and reassured him of the commitment of the three worst-hit countries to eradication of Ebola and economic recovery.

He hailed the role played by Nigeria, which sent medical personnel to help Sierra Leone combat the disease.

President Koroma urged the international community not to isolate the affected countries but instead show empathy and offer assistance.

Following the meeting with President Koroma, Chief Obasanjo paid a surprise visit to the Western Area Emergency Response Centre in Freetown where he met with the various teams combating the Ebola outbreak.

From Sierra Leone, Mr. Obasanjo proceeded to Liberia where he met with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at her offices in Monrovia. Discussions during the meeting centred on post-Ebola economic recovery for the three worst-hit countries.

THEY SAY I AM JUST AN ORDINARY TOUT, ABI? I MUST BECOME STATESMAN BY FORCE.
WHATEVER IT TAKES, I WILL GO TO COUNTRIES WHERE EBOLA IS ERADICATED AND TALK
ABOUT EBOLA THERE. BUT WHAT I WILL NOT DO IS TO ASK THIS HONEST QUESTION, VIZ:

    • Ike

Hahahahaha!!! Very funny but true. But don’t worry, you hear?
Tomorrow, Monday February 23rd, Buhari’s trial starts in court.
He must show that he took the WAEC/Cambridge exam in 1961.
He cannot rely in court on Katsina Provincial College in court.
Without asking evidence Obasanjo jumped forward like a child.
Elders who care for self- respect won’t talk before they think.

AHEAD OF BUHARI’S COURT TRIAL TOMORROW

“Professor Jega of INEC is only trying to shift responsibility by saying people
opposed to Buhari’s qualification for the polls should go to court. I heard the
APC saying Buhari has been contesting election for the past 12 years,
and that nobody said anything about it, so, why now? And my answer,
in form of question is, if someone has been committing robbery and
getting away with it, the day he is caught, you are now asking,
why has he not been caught all this while? Buhari is NOT eligible.
        That is the law.”

Good heart baba!you are a true father of Africa! May GOD be with you and continue to accord you a long live, good health and wisdom!

    • emmanuel

Father of Africa? An abandoned man seeking relevance.

He stated his Love for Nigeria will never be affected by Jonathan. Same man has promised he will help Guinea raise money to fight Ebola.

If he imdeed love Nigeria, how come he did not use the same contacts to raise money for us when the scourge hit the nation?

Why do people praise this man for setting. Nigeria back?

      • PATROTIC NIGERIAN WOMAN

Emmanuel God bless you , you have said it all.

Has Obasanjo forgotten the antecedents of Goodluck
Jonathan in a hurry? Has he forgotten that nobody rivals Goodluck Jonathan and
remains sane and relevant again? baba had started dancing naked in the market
square and he is no longer comfortable. I hope baba is not a striving god
father. where was Obasanjo when Goodluck Govt fought EBOLA hands down and dazed
the whole world including America? He has run to Ebola torn
countries to seek relevance in order to beat Goodluck’s records or what? Is it
part of the APC game plan to import Ebola to Nigeria again through
Obasanjo and discredit the good work Goodluck did? Of what good if not strife
and self relevance is Obasanjo going to Guinea, Sierra Leone and other Ebola
torn countries to do. Where was Obasanjo when Ebola entered Nigeria and why did
he not seek support for vitamins in Nigeria?. What is this sudden love for
other African countries where none was shown to Nigeria that has given Obasanjo
two opportunities to rule as Military and civilian president? Nigerians
wake up from your slumber and shine your eyes. God is indeed exposing evil
people who hate our country. Has Baba gone to seek INTERNATIONAL CAKE to
enable him and his children form A PARALELL GOVERNMENT? More revelations will
come sooner or later; certainly there is more to it than the eyes can see.
GOOLUCK TILL 2019. GOD BLESS NIGERIA!!!

And that is what is called a leader, we will see what becomes of GEJ when he finishes his tenure next two months. When he has disrespected the country and his personality just because of corruption and I don’t care attitude.

  • emmanuel

How did Obasanjo acquire the jet he flies around with?

Those who should have been put on trial for corruption ate those who accuse Jonathan of being corrupt.

  • Rommel

    I just love this man

  • Shahokaya

Rally the leaders of the west cost such that by May this clueless Jonathan will not find asylum in any of these countries, not to talk of the west.

  • Uzoma

“True friendship is tested in times of trials,” the former President said.

Like the vain man he is, he is the one saying :”True friendship is tested in times of trial”, when it should be his host saying it.

    • Philex

Have you watched American presidents during periods of natural disasters where they go in to help countries and communities with aid and relief? Have you heard them say things like “in these difficult moments, we want you to know that, as your friends, we will not abandon you, we will stand by you and make sure that we go through this with you… we will, stand by you, we will not abandon you blah blah blah”? If you haven’t, just go online and listen to some of these speeches and come back and tell us if they sound too different from what Baba is saying.

      • Uzoma

Thank you, sir, for a very polite response.

I have indeed heard American presidents say the things you say they say and because you rendered what they say so accurately, it makes my response easy. First, American presidents speak on behalf of the American people (notice the “we”), and not on their own behalf. Baba was clearly speaking on his own behalf, not on behalf of the Nigerian people. Nigeria had had occasion to come to the aid of these countries at the height of the Ebola epidemic. No Nigerian official, least of all the president, went chest-beating about the assistance.

Second, search all you want, you will never find anywhere that former president Clinton or Jimmy Carter, despite all the good they have been doing around the world (sometimes alongside efforts of the American government), speak of their actions in such terms. To cut a long story short, Baba will always be Baba; he will always like to remain the eternal president of Nigeria, of even Africa

      • PATROTIC NIGERIAN WOMAN

Philex the hypocrite, you even resemble “go and die gov and enemies of progress , are you related! Have you and your baba ever heard the adage that “charity begins at home?” How come baba did not create awareness in Nigeria on vitamins during the ebola saga?. Does it mean Nigerian people did not or do not need sensitization on vitamins? He was only waiting for things to go wrong so he could criticize because he the only ex-president who has PhD in Criticism and witch hunting of his enemies. Please, be reminded that in the spirit of statesmanship and ethics of leadership, you must first of all make impact in you home, country or community before you think of self promotion. Has baba suddenly remembered that he has outlived his relevance in Nigeria and is now seeking international recognition? Good luck to him. As Uzoma rightly said baba’s action should be viewed with great suspicion and he should be quarantined on his return and all his entourage so that they don’t import ebola to Nigeria to spoil our clean record. God bless Nigeria

  • Dr Jaja Kpokobome

Jokes apart, Obansanjo and Ebola which is more benign? The people of Zaki Biam have their story to tell. Those of Odi have theirs too. This crooooook ordered civilian houses destroyed and the aged bombed to death as though It was a state of war. ….and then my dear people of Bodo village who were literally sacked from their communities in what has been described by international observers as the worst oil pollution in the whole of Africa. It destroyed the community’s flora & fauna, killing terrestrial and aquatic life in numbers never before seen or imagined. To that point where even birds no longer flew across the skies of Bodo. But Obasanjo was the president and he never visited. He was more interested in the meetings with Dick Chiney to collect the Halliburton bounty…and now he visits Ebola nations when hard working Nigerian medics have already done the job.

This again marks the absurdity of the Nigerian situation and by extension the African problem. We just never call deviants by their real names. Instead we polish their sins, help them re-arrange their flaws and present them as beacons of rectitude…and later come back to complain.

FRANCE: Dominique was involved in ‘touch me, I touch you’, he was arrested, prosecuted & fined. He was dismissed from his job at IMF, and his political ambition in France ended for life.
NIGERIA: Sanusi was also involved in ‘touch me, I touch you’. Money was mismanaged too…and even when he was dismissed, Nigerians came supporting him. But he ended on the throne with ‘immunity’ from prosecution for both misdeeds.

The above is why Nigeria is never a country, and will never be. People like OBJ should be in jail for their misdeeds.

Obasanjo’s visit to Ebola infested countries must be sinister. The man obasanjo can’t not be trusted; he is capable of doing anything nagative – including playing another Sawyer. Obasanjo must serve a mandatory quarantine period on his return, before allowed to mix with the people.
