Nigerian military goes after Boko Haram in Sambisa forest

The Nigerian military has finally invaded the notorious Sambisa forest base of the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

A statement by the Defence Spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, said a concerted air campaign by the Nigerian Air Force was ongoing in the forest to clear the terrorists from their enclaves.

Mr. Olukolade said Thursday’s air strikes, targeted at the training camps and logistics dumps of the terrorists in Sambisa forests and parts of Gwoza were “highly successful”.

He said a high death rate was recorded on the side of the terrorists while many others were scampering out of the areas invaded by the military.

“Details of casualty will be determined in subsequent phases of the operation. Meanwhile, the strikes continue in other locations of the theatre heralding the advance of troops and other elements of the mission,” Mr. Olukolade said.

The claims could not be independently confirmed.

The Nigerian military has been sternly criticised for not going after Boko Haram militants despite knowing their major bases.

The new strikes will also raise concerns over the safety of over 200 school girls believed to be held in the Sambisa area by the insurgent group since April 14 last year.

The girls were abducted from their hostel at Government Secondary School Chibok in Borno State.

The military had said in the past it was avoiding an all-out battle on the Sambisa enclave for the sake of the girls’ safety.

  • IAMAFRICAN

The claims could not be independently confirmed…..So with your rat head, the NA statement is not sufficient for you. Will CNN say such about a statement by the US army?

    • Joe

      God bless you my dear.

    • Hypocrisy

Oh! Blessed art though forever and ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!……………………….Amen.

U see, it is another way for PT to say ‘we are not happy with this invasion’.

I can imagine CNN writing on its web portal and claiming to doubt US Defense spokesman in respect of a press statement regarding US air strikes against ISIS. Oh continent Nigeria? Is this what you’ve become?

      • chels

shut up!.. is it not the same NA that said the Chibok girls would be realesed and they have struck a cease fire with boko haram? Hence Premium Times have to independently confirm. Aboki

        • adeade

Then PT should go to Sambisa and find out,, PT, we know your antecedents…

      • August January

I wish them victory, but the newspaper is right by calling for caution with regard to taking what the army spokesman said as the gospel truth, especially given that the Nigerian army had made frivolous claims about the battle with Boko Haram in the past. For example, the army once told the whole world that they had killed Shekau, but it turned out to be a pure lie. All the same, I wish them real killing of Shekau this time around, rather than imaginary killing. Added to that, let them be sure of the situation and level of success before telling the whole world again what they have achieve on the battleground

        • True

Believe Shekau is alive and believe anything. Even if this present clone of Shekau is killed today tomorrow another will surface. It is called terrorist propaganda.

        • FortB

They made an error with the Chibok girls purported rescue. That was a once off error and they came clean to admit their mistake. Why must we continue to drum that forever? Anyone can make mistakes. What is important is to admit when it which they did almost immediately they realized it. Abe, lets give them our support. These are people facing death daily on our behalf. Its not an easy task

        • Michael Chukwukelu

The army did killed shekau you just didn’t believe it

    • True

      Tell them enemy of progress.

  • grace folarin

This is wonderful news, peace to be restored to the north east, elections to be held in a free, fair and peaceful environment. the GEJ administration is truly a blessing to Nigerians. GEJ is working. #GEJ4NAIJA

Nigeria is not a country but a Continent
Continent Nigeria is sick and we all know it.
    Let us not be selfish
Let us stop wallowing in that murky waters of self delusion that there is hope
No, there can’t be hope when a presidential candidate threatens to spill blood
Let us not remain permanent students in the school of ignorance
Yes! And we all know it but pretend that all is well

Nigeria is not a country but a Continent
There is something inherently wrong with Nigeria and we all know it…
That there is a long standing structural defect
A system designed to frustrate the best and encourage the worst
Such is our ridiculous constitution –
Making School Cert a minimum requirement for the highest office in the land
But it was designed to accommodate a section of Nigeria
Yes! And we all know it but pretend that all is well

Nigeria is not a country but a Continent
This is why from France – Belgium – Germany – Jordan – Niger Republic etc
All citizens, especially the locals protest against Islamist terrorists after any attacks
But in our Continent Nigeria, the protest is against the President
Yes too..We see the opposition in alliance with incumbents to fight terrorists in other COUNTRIES
But in CONTINENT Nigeria, the opposition sabotages every effort to fight terrorists
In some cases they opposition canvasses for the bizarre – ‘amnesty’ for murderous terrorists.

Nigeria is not a country but a Continent
Oh our Nigeria! Bequeathed to us without consultation
When will we have courage to dismember?
That all may prosper according to his own pace…That all may live without bombs here and there
That those who love backwardness may be on permanent reverse gear
That beauty pageants may be held once again without bloodshed in any country which so desires
That a sick President will feel comfortable to receive get well visit from his/her Vice President

THEY ARE RETURNING WITH VICTORY BY THE GRACE OF GOD.WE SALUTE THEIR COURAGE.OUR PRAYERS AND SUPPORTS ARE WITH THEM.. VOTE WISELY, VOTE GEJ #GEJ4NAIJA

  • Dazmillion

Please be mindful of innocent victims caught in the forest due to no fault of theirs. I hope there was concrete intelligence before bombing started.

  • Musuru

Being mindful of the innocent lives in the forest was one of the major reasons they couldn’t make airstrike bombardments…. The accusations and curses upon them from we Nigerians every second, that they have not been doing anything, has made them embark on such attacks…. We should please therefore keep shut, and pray for our brave soldiers and their families, and the lives of the innocent there… Period! May this nightmare Nigeria has had over the years come to a victorious stop by our brave soldiers… Amen!

    • Thanks Musuru

    • True

      Very good comments, thump up.

  • Yusuf

we pray for success while hoping that the military will be able to protect innocent civilians

    • Otile

Who are the innocent civilians in Sambisa Forest?

      • omo lagos

        Nyako ati el rufai

  • BTT

God bless NG Military for taking the battle to the terrorists hideouts. It’s now we really need intelligence support to avoid civilians casualty..

  • Dr.Dan

I hope this is not another propaganda by the military to boost the campaign of their failed commander in chief. Notwithstanding, thumbs up even though its coming too late after over 30,000 Nigerians have been slaughtered by these beast called BoKo Haram. I encourage you to burn Sambisa to ashes. I dont believe anyone living or farming there can be innocent.

  • chi boss

Well done Nigerian Army for the courage and zeal to fight Boko Haram.. We will be victorious..#GEJ4NAIJA
