Call for Interim National Government exercise in futility, May 29 sacrosanct — Mark

Senator David Mark

The President of the Nigerian Senate, David Mark, has described the call for Interim National Government by some Nigerians as ‘’imprecise, sordid and strange’’ to the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Mr. Mark stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at the resumed sitting of the Senate after its one-month recess.
He said that the issue of polls rescheduling and the call for interim government had been given undeserved prominence across the country.

According to him, the Senate will not be part of any move to violate the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, which the lawmakers have sworn to uphold.

“I am alarmed that the issue of Interim National Government has been given underserved prominence in our national discourse. Interim National Government is alien to the 1999 Constitution as amended. Therefore, those calling for it are calling for an exercise in futility.

“This Senate is committed to the provisions of our constitution which we swore to protect and we will not do anything to sabotage the democratic process. It is important to note that on the 29th of May, 2015, a democratically elected government, through a free, fair, transparent and credible election will be sworn in,” he said.

Mr. Mark called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to use the six weeks extension to continue to put measures in place to ensure a free, fair and credible election.

He also urged Nigerians to support INEC in its effort to conduct a transparent election, adding that all Nigerians, including lawmakers, should desist from making comments that would instigate violence.

“These are not ordinary times in our nation; there is palpable tension in the land. Comments and even the body language of the political class further exacerbate the tension. As statesmen and women, we must rise to the occasion and help reduce this tension.

“We must refrain from acts that will aggravate this already charged atmosphere across the country. I urge you, my distinguished bosses, to be dedicated to our constitutional duties as you have always done,” he said.

He further urged Nigerians to be true statesmen and women both in words and deeds to douse the tension in the nation. (NAN)

This is good. But the problem is that when the postponement of the election was a rumor, the President and PDP denied it. The President even promised US Secretary of State that the election would hold as scheduled, but what happened later? It is for this reason that this administration and its principal actors have no credibility. I will not be surprised if after meeting with the President, Mr. Mark start to say something different.

Mark has always spoken from a patriotic point of view, it is our hope that he will also act from that point of view especially at this trying moment. Everyone stand to lose a great deal if this democracy is truncated, this people have stolen alot of our resources, they should pls leave our freedom alone

  • sammyctu ode

Is david mark flying a kite like sambo again? dm statement is strange because he has never been on the side of the people. Maybe what he said was to bring the issue up for discussion again and before we know it, the interim government will be a reality. To trust all these top echelons of pdp is dangerous because when they say black they really mean white.

  • Gaskiya

Mark is criminal and therefore can not be trusted by Nigerians. Thank you intelligent Nigerians. You really the language of our enemies. Once defeated twice shy.

  • David Adeniran

David Mark, I hope if they call you to come and Head the Interim Government, you will start singing a different song? This I know because an average Nigerian politician is EXTREMELY SELFISH, just like Shonekan fell into IBB’s evil hand as a fallout of the June 12 annulment.

  • favourtalk

Even the mark is going to his father’s house come March 28 and he will surely be surprised as many nigerians don’t want to hear PDP as a party in nigeria again, we need change in our country and we will surely achieve it by doing the right thing

Bonaventure ole jatijati. Always talking from both sides of the mouth. All this money you have yet nothing to show in otupko.

  • Ette

Look at this unbriddled corrupt man deceiving himself. Is he not the one who told us that election was not on priority list of the senate till the insurgency war was won: so if by May 29, 2015 the war is not won, what did Mark think will happen at that time: to ask him to preside? Greedy man. May God almighty continue to disgrace all of you who are destroying this nation. God bless Nigeria.

  • Danylo

Everyone in PDP keeps reminding us that “May 29 is Sacrosanct” none has said what that holding election is sacrosanct! So I ask what do they mean by “May 29 is Sacrosanct”?

  • Maitama Tambari

Both Ette and Danylo are correct in the description of Mark. Danylo asked a vital question in that since President Jonathan said that handing over on “29th May is Sacrosanct”. Nobody has come out to tell us what would be in holding election. Is election going be held or not? Is election sacrosanct. Constituting a Committee to write the results in which Mark according to on line report is a Member of the said Committee including SGF, headed by Tom Ikimi and corrupt rogue INEC Members. May be this is the meaning of the sacrosanct that Presidency is faning. We should be alert, every patriotic Nigerian should be alert, because in America we had a saying of “GIVE THEM HELL, AND LET THEM WORRY ABOUT IT”. The work of the Committee is to give Nigerians HELL by announcing false results because they control the media, security agencies and part of the judiciary, and the onus of dispute and clarification that PDP was not the winning party lies with Nigerians. As the saying goes in Nigeria, the masses cast votes while the political elites do the election. Professor Jega has refused to play ball. We should be vigilant. CHANGE! YES WE CAN.
