Police IG rejects AIG Mbu’s mass killing call, urges restraint

Acting Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba

The Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has cautioned personnel of the force against the use of firearms during the forthcoming general elections “except in extreme circumstances”.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, on Saturday, said Mr. Abba gave the warning when he addressed senior officers in his office.

Mr. Abba said that the Nigeria Police has “a mandate to save and protect lives, and not to kill, contrary to recent statements in the media”.

Controversial Assistant Inspector General of Police, Joseph Mbu, had said the police in his division will kill 20 persons for the death of a police personnel.

“If one of my men is killed, I shall kill twenty of them but don’t shoot first,” Mr. Mbu said. “If they shoot you, shoot back in self-defence. Anybody who fires you, fire him back in self-defence,” he said.

The remarks have drawn widespread condemnations, with the All Progressives Congress, APC, lambasting Mr. Mbu as a barbaric and lawless officer who must be immediately cautioned.

In his statement, the Police Inspector General, said in spite of provocation, attributes of a police officer as contained in the Police Regulations, requires him to exercise “tact, patience and tolerance and control of temper in trying situations’’.

He also cautioned the personnel against excesses and reminded them of the dire consequences of abuse of human rights as contained in the recently released Human Rights Practice Manual of the force.

Mr. Abba restated his avowed commitment to observance of the rule of law and the respect of the fundamental rights of citizens by all police officers.

“The rule of law is the underpinning tenet of democracy which will guide police officers in the discharge of their roles in the forthcoming national elections,’’ he said.

He restated the preparedness of the force to provide the requisite security before, during and after the elections.

Since the IGP has now seen and read the mindset of AIG Mbu, what other evidence would the IGP need to remove this barbaric AIG Joseph Mbu? At the least withdraw this barbaric officer and place him on desk duty somewhere in Abuja. Nigerians cannot afford to lose human lives. AIG Joseph Mbu must be watching gangster movies and now trying to apply them to situations in Nigeria.

  • ROHCNAWN

IG IS BETTER AS YOU HAVE SHIFTED THE BALL TO MR MBU. IF HE DOES NOT TAKE TIME HE ie MBU WILL END UP IN PRISON

  • Hassan Lawal

This IG is not saying the truth.

  • BlackieUmukoro

The IGP did not slam Mbu. It was an open ended statement. The policeman has a right to life just as you his would be killer. In extreme circumstances and provation in the words of the IGP, take necessary action and that include shooting to kill. The bottom line obey the law and don’t confront the police in a lawless manner under any circumstances

    • Maitama Tambari

Umukoro, if you agreed with the statement of IG on extreme circumstance and provocation, who would define provocation and who would determine extreme circumstances, the holder of the gun, the Police. In a rational society, police at pooling booths are always unarmed to allow normal civil exercises to take place. That is the reason why in Britain Policemen walk or patrol with baton to use to disarm civilian, not to kill because the human being is capital asset to the country. You may keep battle ready Police Squads far and away from civilians until requested by necessity of circumstances, even then opening fire should be the last resort unless the Egyptian episode during and after the Arab Spring would be the scripts for the Police in Nigeria, extreme caution should be upheld in South West. CHANGE! YES WE CAN.

      • BlackieUmukoro

I disagree. Policemen are game in Nigeria. Armed robbers kill them at will. Boko haram started with the killing of policemen. Why should thugs go to a polling booth with arms with the sole aim of killing the policeman if he does not co+perate or assist in the snatching of the ballot box. These are exceptional circumstances and the police have to use extreme measures too. That is what I think Sent from my BlackBerry wireless device from MTN

        • blackdove

You should at least condemn the utterances of a very senior police officer threatening to kill dozens of civilians if 1 police officer is killed. What happened to due process and the rule of law?

          • BlackieUmukoro

Was the policeman to be killed, done under due process?

This animal with no moral compass won’t stop thronging Internet news sites to talk barbaric every time he opens his cursed mouth. He who God wants to punish, he first makes mad.

    • Richard

This your your statement just proves you to be lawless and inhuman .

      • BlackieUmukoro

When a policeman is killed by political thugs, it is lawful. But when a police kills a politically thug heavily armed in self defense, it becomes barbaric and lawless. Dia ris god oo Sent from my BlackBerry wireless device from MTN

  • Tahir

The IG did not caution Mbu, just made some bland statement. He should have queried him and brought back to the Headquarters to man a desk. Apparently is like he is above rebuke.

  • Chris1408

Mbu should be fired immediately. We’re not paying his salary to kill Nigerians. The scum Mbu is a disgrace to the force, his family and himself.

    • 5rancis_Canad5

I feel MBU is hungry and wants to fight and kill. Plssss I g post this “patriotic” police officer to Bornu precisely his head office be in Sambisa Forest. He will really be of help.

  • Epi

Mbu need to be posted to Borno where his services are more needed.

  • Olalere Yusuf

Please the IGP take charge and caution the mad dog in Lagos masquerading as an AIG.

  • KokoBaresi

Mbu have consistently demonstrated the crudeness of the Nigeria police. If the Nigeria police force is serious and concern about the public perception of their credibility; officers like Mbu should have been withdrawn and made to answer charges on incitement of junior officers against the public.

  • sammyctu ode

Who posted the mad dog animal called mbu to Lagos and SW zone, is it not the inspector general of police so why is he talking from the two sides of his foul mouth? Both of them will soon be out of the force after GMB is sworn in as the next Nigerian President.

    • egoigwe

No, it isn’t and we know it. Ultimately, the NPF falls under the C-In-C in the final analysis especially during an election year. We know whose pitbull Mbu is.

  • Ette

This shows the impunity of the corrupt police force. If a mad officer has brought the police to disrepute, sane thing to do is sanction him as deterrent to others. MBU is bigger than the IG because he takes instructions from the emperor GEJ, so IG cannot do anything, not even to mention his name. The end of their wicked reign is at hand for NIGERIANS to rejoice again. God bless Nigeria.

    • NazirJos

      Amen.

  • David Adeniran

It is not enough to reject his barbaric and unethical pronouncement, in a sane society he will be REMOVED or SACKED for that utterance. The best they could have done for him in the Nigerian context would have been to transfer him to Yobe or Borno State.

    • Odogwu

      Honestly!

    • NazirJos

      Agreed 100%

  • egoigwe

Now, this is how a true officer and gentleman speaks.

  • Arabakpura

How I wish Mr Mbu reports to you the IG; unfortunately, Mbu reports to the chief Inspector General of Police, Dame Patience Jonathan.
Your caution would have made sense if it were to be the other way round

  • WALE

MBU is a complete Mad man that should be dismissed from police force.

  • WALE

This useless officer must be tried by the hierarchy of police force.I suggest they are afraid of him

  • abass jelili

Mbu is the police commissioner in Oyo State when the citizen were being killed like fowls by armed robbers and NURTW headed by Tokyo. With Mbu as the AIG in charge of Lagos and Ogun, you will notice a remarkable increase in illegal police road blocks, increase in armed robberies and NURTW in fightings. He is the Iyamu of our time. You remember Iyamu in Edo State. He is a policeman sponsoring and leading armed robbers in Edo in those days.

  • kayode

Why cant Mbu be sent to north east zone where his typical behaviour is needed to combat crimes/terrorism is needed. I believe his posting to Lagos is for a reason known to GEJ.

  • Parrot

The guy is a complete mad dog, very indecent where on earth does law enforcement agent says this.
All these happening right under the Govt of Goodluck Jonathan with impunity!!!!!!.

  • Oweja

Shut up Mr IG! Mbu, your oga don talk finish. Anything you say can be used against you before Mama Peace o! Take time o!

  • Joe igbokwe

REMOVE JOSEPH MBU NOW. RETIRE HIM FROM THE FORCE NOW BEFORE HE ROCKS THE BOAT . WHO ENLISTED THIS MAN INTO THE FORCE? PLEASE GET HIM OUT OF LAGOS NOW. LAGOS IS NOT RIVERS STATE EVEN THOUGH GOVERNOR AMAECHI IS NOT A COWARD. MBU HAS STIRRED THE HORNET’s NET AND WE WILL FIGHT HIM WITH ALL THE ENERGY AT OUR DISPOSAL, WITH ALL THE EMPHASIS IN OUR COMMAND. MBU MUST GO NOW!

  • Sir k

Mbu has collected his own EGUNJE to kill people he supposed to protect, imagine a whole AIG of Nigeria police force barking like a mad dog. When the Changes come you will end up in jail.
