21 INEC Resident Commissioners reject postponement of elections

Attahiru Jega

Twenty one Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have rejected a proposal to postpone Nigeria’s general elections billed for February 14 and 28.

In a vote conducted Saturday by the INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, after he met with political parties and the civil society, 21 RECs said the elections should continue as planned while 16 others voted in support of a reschedule.  Nigeria has 37 RECs, each for a state and the Federal Capital, Abuja.

The outcome of the vote came as Nigerians await INEC’s decision on whether the elections are moved or not.

After 17 political parties voted for a postponement as against 11 that argued for INEC to remain faithful to its time table, the mood across the land suggested that INEC will capitulate to a demand by military and security chiefs asking for a six weeks postponement on the presumed grounds that which appears to be spreading on a daily basis.

Civil society leaders, organized in support of credible and transparent elections in Nigeria, otherwise called the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, reacted sharply blasting the security chiefs accusing them of fomenting a surreptitious coup against democracy.

In their own consultative meeting with the INEC top brass, the Situation Room called for the resignation of military chiefs and security heads including the Police “on account of their inability to exercise their constitutional responsibility to secure lives and property at all times including during the elections.”

Speaking for the group in its statement, Agianpe Ashang, a senior programme officer at the  Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, PLAC, said the action of the security chiefs “amounted to blackmail [to] arm-twist the Election Management Body away from its constitutional guaranteed function of conducting elections.”  The group them asked Nigerians to defend their hard won struggle to entrench democracy in the country.

Jibrin Ibrahim, a senior fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, in Abuja, who was at the meeting, said Mr. Jega told the meeting that security operatives informed INEC that they were commencing a six weeks special operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the north eastern corridors of the country and would rather not be distracted by the elections.

The opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, has rejected any plan to postpone the election saying such calls are sponsored by President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling party to stave their imminent defeat at the polls.

The reasoning among civil society members align with popular enthusiasm for the election even in the north eastern regions where the insurgency is active.

According to a political survey recently conducted by the NOI polls, analysis by geo-political zones revealed that the North-West (89%) and South-East (87%) regions accounted for the largest proportions of Nigerians who expressed optimism for voting in the 2015 general elections when compared to other regions, although a majority of residents in all the geo-political zones expressed optimism in voting in the 2015 general elections, with a minimum 76% (North Central). Also, respondents aged 46-60 and 18-21 years showed more optimism for voting in the 2015 elections than other age-groups.

It is not clear what the commission’s eventual decision would be with the latest voting pattern by the RECs.

Mr. Jega is expected to brief the media any moment from now.

This are the real soldier for defending our democracy not those zombie and busy body, so for the past six years where were they? Why all of the sudden, why six weeks in the first instance meaning more will come. It’s a coup that is bloodless. Chad are busy fighting and u people are busy telling people that u can defend the remaining part of Nigeria? Mtseww

  • Duke Imevbore Aigboje

This is madness! How can the military and the entire security outfit shoe this degree of partisanship?

  • Maria

Hahahahahahaha….I dey laugh ooooo! The bribe is not enough… O ya Jona release more billions!

    • Otile

Maria, don’t ask the authorities to release more billions for bribery. Bribery is corruption, I thought you were a good Christian young lady. Laugh like a Christian.

      • Wähala

        How does a Christian laffu?

@Sis Maria, looks likely you may be called to service to replenish my fridge. Hahahaha… bribe doesn’t always work!

  • Umar Dendi

Aren’t the police enough to handle civil affairs? What’s this obsession we have with inducting an obviously incompetent Army to protect election materials?

    • Otile

You call the Army incompetent because your Muslim brothers betray them at the font. Many of you inciting civil disobedience will perish in the ensuing violence, Beelzebub your deity will not prevail.

      Dendi garcon, ecoutez moi?

    • arewethishopeless

Our security services are not only shameless but also do not mind being the laughing stock of the whole world. Have they ever guaranteed security for elections? They cannot handle Boko Haram and yet INEC is looking for 100 percent guarantee! So the military could not handle boko boys for the past 6 years but can now do it in six weeks! What an insult to our collective intelligence?

This is all subject to interpretation but the bottom line is INEC led by JEGA has capitulated and failed this country. He is now hiding behind subjective interpretation of security report. JEGA has single-handedly put this country on a dangerous path. Jega, you will not succeed ….

Yes, Jega has now paved way for Jonathan’s interim government. Now tell me, since everyone now believes no election will take place, who do you think will go and collect PVCs

  • Kunle

Jega should not be deterred by these agents of Jonathan calling themselves military forces read to start operation against Boko Haram on he day of the elections. They are stomach infrastructure soldiers and not men of the Nigerian army..

Be strong #Jega; the battle did not start today, remember your days as ASUU chairman facing the antics of #IBB

  • Dammy

Professor Jega has no administrative ability

How many more blunders will bring in the home truth that Attahiru Jega doesn’t know how to plan?
What is this vox populi he’s conducting in his office meant for? Just pure nonsense in ignorance!
Without security support there can’t be election. That’s simple. What’s civil society going to do about it?
Or what are the 37 subordinate Resident Commissioners now to do? Can they conjure up security cover?
Of course, they can’t, and so, what’s Professor Attahiru Jega’s vox populi meant to achieve? Nothing!

    • endingNaija

President Goodluck Jonathan, these are your words “what’s Professor Attahiru Jega’s vox populi meant to achieve? Nothing!..” This means the VOICE OF THE PEOPLE MEANS NOTHING TO YOU PRESIDENT JONATHAN. You said this with your own mouth.

“SACK JEGA” campaign starting in earnest.

  • Gwazy

My take Ignore the military. 21 states should go ahead and vote now, the rest can vote at a later date that the commission deems necessary. this should curb whatever tricks the presidency has up its sleeves. Jega you run the INEC, don’t cower to this, You have a chance to write your name in gold!!!

  • Comfortkay

What is it exactly that we want to make better when the looters are saying postpone the election so that we can eat more of the national cake.
If the election is not held, if it is postpone Nigeria will have a situation like JUNE 12. PDP must go by 14 of Feb 2015.

  • Sammy Charles

Sack Jega now. He is totally incompetent

    • Naira

No wonder your mother sacked your father to give birth to you from a boko haram father from Utuoke.

  • Taster

The election must go on, NO to postponement – the best the political elites can do to save the nation if they really care is to jump into ISIMOKOTO lake and get drowned, as that is the only atonement needed to save NIGERIA

Why wasn’t the same overwhelming force used last year or last two years ? Why is it urgent now there is an election that threatens fundamental change ? Does Jonathan not know that he is further alienating Nigerians with these antics and that he ultimately stands to lose ?

PROF JEGA & INEC MUST REMEMBER THE ANAMBRA EXPERIENCE

2003, 2007 and 2011 elections were all held in the month of April ….. why the rush especially when it it is obvious to all that INEC is not ready for the elections ?

INEC must remember the Anambra Governorship election experience and what the All Propaganda Congress (APC) is capable of doing if they get a hint of administrative lapses on the part of INEC.

In fact, in the case of Anambra, they nearly succeeded in discrediting the elections based on unexpected minor and unavoidable administrative lapses by INEC.

INEC must ensure that they give no room to the All Propaganda Congress (APC) to discredit the elections by ensuring that elections hold only when INEC is comprehensively ready.

Nigeria Army has no business in conducting election, they have tasted corruption , just like housefly taste honey, hence the decay & devaluation of their professionalism . Listen to how Boy Scout Aliyu Momoh was talked down and ordered around in the tape recorded by Captain Sagir Koli in Ekiti election, will convince Nigerians that we do not need these pot belly generals for election. They have failed woefully in their primary assignment against BH , with >13,000 dead ,millions displaced( IDP) ,thousands refuges and territory lost to BH.They should face their Primary Assignment.Protecting the Territorial Integrity.

M’y question Is: who commands the military and the police. How Can they just wake up and tell that unless élections are postponed, they Will not do their work.
Does This mean that the Security operatives Will now be giving conditions to the commander-in-chief before they do their work? Or, has the commander-in-chief given them a script to come out and act?
This only confirms the fact that our president can not get anything right. Perhaps that’s the reason why he is referred to as “clueless”.

If PDP is not ready for elections and they want to hold on to power by denying us our basic rights then they can pack their bags and their plenty baggage and go home. We are sick of all the mess they have dragged us through.

          • Godfrey Etokebe

Does the Nigerian constitution empowers the REC to proceed wiith the elections in which the electorates do not have PVCs to vote With?

          • Enemona

The constitution gives INEC the power and independence to decide, with cogent and verifiable reasons/facts, the postponement of elections. How this is done is not to be determined by any external forces, it is for them to decide. The rest of us read the constitution while a few of you, the uncouth minority, read the presidents body language. Take your ignorance somewhere else, even tho who send you here know INEC has to decide that is why they have piled undue pressure on them.

To be effective as a political erat, i think you need so,e basic knowledge of the constitution. Go now, your ignorance is shameful.

      • Wähala

Novice… your mumu pass 1st Class.
The decision rests solely with INEC and not registered parties and who they represent. If you insist, how about asking the PDP-led Govt. to the decision to the Nigerian public in a quickie referendum lets test your “Representation Theory” and analyze the raw data… it’s called, ’empirical test’. Trust me, those briefcase parties’ chieftain pocketed their share of the N20bn the raised specifically for bribing their way thru this elections, and did not think for a second about the people they’re representing. Hahaha chei, indeed.

        • Godfrey Etokebe

If they are so IRRELEVANT, WHY did INEC CONSULT THEM?

  • chat4zeal

The US asked for weapons to train our soldiers, they said all their weapons are in the war front, Jega is now asking for security and the response is that they are all engaged when we know clearly that Cameroon, Chad and Niger are doing their job for them.

  • Enemona

Jibrin Ibrahim, a senior fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, in Abuja, who was at the meeting, said Mr. Jega told the meeting that security operatives informed INEC that they were commencing a six weeks special operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the north eastern corridors of the country and would rather not be distracted by the elections.

Nonsense, so they want to fight BH now…….. where have they been slumbering? Bulls!!!!

  • Tunsj

I’m sure that the sixteen RECs who voted in support of a reschedule have been bribed by Jonathan and PDP.

    • Godfrey Etokebe

They were the only INTELLIGENT ONES!!!

    • tyson

Agasin what right do these socalled RECs have to tell us when to conduct the elections————who took the votes————of the fulanis in INEC——–I AM SHOCKED TO SEE A MEDIA HOUSE CARRY SUCH A YEYE STORY—THAT RESIDENT ELECTORAL OFFICERS NOW WANT TO TELL NIGERIANS HOW TO VOTE–WHEN TO VOTE AND WHERE TO VOTE–MADNESS OF TOF THE HIGHEST ORDER

  • Wähala

The “APC have said to the PDP, come let us wrestle and they are running away” – Gov. Amaechi.

Hahahahaaa! Where are FFK, obese Doyin, Prof. Alkahol et al, to answer Amaechi’s call to battle? Even US are challenging Dumbo to run for re-election nah. Chei! Wiaris Dumbo oo? Under Dr. Drunk, elections may be postponed for the first time in Nigeria’s history… another bleak legacy of the Otuoke Clown Prince. If the elections are held, he knows he’s down the toilet drains. Aschloch. A delay can only mean acceptance of defeat and evidence of his evil plots to handover to his cousin, Minimah. The US will serve him Abiola Tea if he doesn’t get the fcuk out of our lives. Thinks Americans comment for nothing ba? The RECs should ignore obese Alex Badeh, he ran away to Abuja rather than defend his ancestral home… it’s only folly expecting him to defeat the Bokos in 600yrs, not week. The Oloshi! Elections must hold biko… Igbo people say, “There’s no postponing a wrestling match in an open field”. Dumbo must accept Amaechi’s arm in wrestling make we know how far… or, accept Buhari’s fossil ol’ Soja hands make we know which man-pass-man. Talk is free, but gets very expensive when it comes to putting your muscles where your mouth is. Hahahahaha chei… #WiarisDumbo-Sambo o! ???

  • Enemona

Totally, this government has lost all credibility and legitimacy. Jega, how do you want to be remembered?

  • Change for the Worse

A six-week postponement will affect the whole timetable. And that gives just enough time for APC to dump the semi-literate, serial conman, Oluwole (Katsina campus) certificate forger, quota system major general, Bokohari. That’s before the courts do the needful.

  • tyson

The Said RECs should go bury their janjaweed APC heads in shame—they are pigs—who should not be allowed to show their ugly heads in public again————-if they had done their jobs as expected of them by the masses who hired them—– we would not have gotten ourselves into this mess—-46m Nigerians are not going to be able to vote because of their nonchalant attitude to national issues or assignment——–Its only in Nigeria that we see such shameless people parade themselves after being forced by their Fulani boss–Jega to steal votes for a man who has no certificate———-If they had chased Buhari- and his certificate issue—he would not have disgraced Nigeria b4 the international community—-Aware of our 419 status around globe-Now some yearn to have a president who could not pass his primary school leaving certificate—where do these traitors called RECs also come from? Uganda or togo? Which state of the federation biko–Let us see their tribal marks–for once–animals

  • Uzoma John

GEJ has finally shown the world that he is a dictator in civilian clothing, using all the security agencies to blackmail INEC and Nigerians, as a result of their refusal to provide security for the election. The security outfits have not hidden their bias and allegiance to PDP and GEJ but not Nigerians. This is what GEJ is bequeathing Nigerians- corruption and manipulation. Even if the military decides to send 30,000 soldiers to fight BH, we still have over 150,000 soldiers, if not more, to help during the elections. If I may ask, is it the responsibility of military to provide security for elections? This is the sole responsibility of the Police as enshrined in the constitution. Are more than 250,000 policemen in the police force also going to Sambisa to fight BH? Worst case scenario, election can hold in other parts of Nigeria and a date can be fixed for the affected North Eastern States. Countries like Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan with deadlier terrorists still hold elections on schedule. It is a big shame to GEJ and the military that BH is now dictating what we do and when we do things in Nigeria. The same BH they claim cannot stop Nigeria from functioning. GEJ and PDP are behind BH, and they know that. We are not dismayed. We are not giving up until we chase these criminals away and sanitize Nigeria. Whenever they think they are ready, we will mobilize and vote them out. The day of reckoning is come. Rubbish

    • abbati

      Well done.

    • Separate Us…

I thought providing adequate security for elections should be rested on Nigerian police…..Somebody enlight me please

  • taewo

Before 6 weeks, Jega will be removed and charged for corruption. Another INEC chairman will be appointed (remember Sanusi). A further extension of 6 months will be required for the new chairman to settle in. The public will become disenchanted. An election will be held. Bogus results will be announced. Jonathan will be declared the winner.

Nigerians, you are being treated like fools though you will claim to be the most educated in Africa. Tell me any other country where things like this happen without the people trooping into the streets.

The world powers will only come to your aid if you are ready to defend your democracy.

Your future is in your hands!

    • Hummm

YOU ARE RIGHT, WORLD POWER WILL PROTECT THE 14TH OF FEBRUARY ELECTION DATE. GEJ WILL BE HUMULIATE, HE IS PLAYING WITH FIRE. INT’L WORLD WILL TURN AGAINST HIM.

    • Tunsj

      Nigerians are TIMID.

    • If you will lead the street protest, I will follow. It is not all about saying and writing but action

    • Rick Efa

We need to stand up now.

  • MOU

    Jega,

Call their bluff. Conduct the elections!!!

Dafti claimed that he has over 20,000 soldiers fighting boko haram. They have not secured any victory in 6years because of their acute incompetence.

Can somebody tell me how the Nigerian Army who has not been able to do anything about boko haram for 6years with 20,000 soldiers, now are suddenly able to do end boko haram in 6weeks?

The Nigerian security forces, especially the armed forces and police, have a constitutionally mandated duty to protect ALL Nigerians – election or no election. Its not a privilege but a constitutionally protected right which subsists and does not even have to be demanded.

If the armed forces and police are unable to do their jobs, they should be summarily dismissed. Further, their inability to do their constitutionally mandated job becomes treasonable if their refusal was intentional.

Nigerian Independent Electoral Commission, call their bluff and do this election to save our country from the hands of gross inefficacy and marrow deep corruption.

SHAME ON THE DAFT NIGERIAN PRESIDENT FOR TRYING TO DESTROY NIGERIA

GOD KILL DAFTI AND SAVE NIGERIA AND INNOCENT PEOPLE OF NIGERIA !!!

  • Tope

NIGERIAN ARE BEING TREATED AS FOOLS. PEOPLE SHOULD COME OUT ON THE STREETS AND DEFEND THEIR RIGHTS. NIGERIANS NEED TO FLUSH BAD GOVERNMENT OUT THROUGH STREET PROTESTS.

  • Original_Raskal

these inec commissioners are f00ls! go ahead and conduct elections when over 34% have not gotten pvc’s???

    • eBusinesz

Agree less but not fools. But I think those Commissioners are the ones used to act of rigging. either the people particpate or not they will declare result. we need their names and states they have conducted elections before and states they are managing now. they are likely access to evil. NO PVC no Election

  • sammyctu ode

If even INEC finally postpone the elections, that will not help the chief architects of evil- jonathan and pdp. They think they have power to ride rough shots over Nigerians but what they forget is that God’s power is ultimate. Millions and Majority of Nigerians have made up their minds whom they want to vote for and by HIS GRACE, jonathan will lose the elections at last.

  • Kickboxer

    ERRATA!!

Here we go again. Another semi-literate Yariba attempting to MISINFORM/MISLEAD low-information readers. Let us even assume that the writer did not set out to BAMBOOZLE readers the why would he delve into a matter he has no iota of knowledge about or did not have time to research? I mean, even newspaper vendors and ogogolo sellers know that the recent agitiation for Biafra began in 1995, formally, MASSOB and has continued to grow ever since.

Therefore, Mr writer, the reason Biafra was resurrected was beyond brainless Buhari, Hausa-Fulani, Yariba, and Nigeria state. If you can’t get this basic fact, then do not write about it, semi-literate!!

Brainless Buhari cannot affect Igbos even if he fired all those working in government. As far as Igbos go brainless Buhari is inconsequential in Igbo life. Lt truth be told.

    2. IGBO WILL BE PRESIDENT IN 2023 whether brainless Buhari likes it or not. QED.

    • Edeki Suku

Bros, did you really read this article?yeah I might have gotten certain things wrong but I will say he nailed it.
Igbos Biafrans must leave Nigeria by all means necessary even if we have to go to war again, let’s go.

Igbos don’t want presidency, nor position of higher authority, all we want is equity fairness, and rule of law,we will thrive as we did before 1960.
Igbo Biafrans don’t belong to Nigeria, honestly we are too good to be associated with Nigeria or Nigerians.
The writer nailed some of the issues 100%.The Hausa/Fulani is living in illusion, because they don’t know better that is why they introduced and reward quota system because they are not intelligent enough to compete, that is a system that will not fly anywhere around the globe except in Northern Nigeria.

I say to any Igbo man from Igbo Akiri(Igbanke)to Igweocha(port Harcourt)be ready for the liberation war.I pray for a peaceful separation but if pushed to defend Biafraland again I will fight.

      • Uche

Thanks Edeki for an insightful response which is exemplified in your comment:

” Igbos don’t want presidency, nor position of higher authority, all we want is equity
fairness ,and rule of law,we will thrive as we did before 1960″

        Checkout my similar response.

        Remain blessed.

    • Uche

You apparently did not read the article or did not comprehend it if you actually read it.

The writer was truthful and unbiased in his assertions.

Let me reiterate to you that Igbos don’t need the presidency. What we want is structural /institutional reforms which makes more impact and is long-lasting than mere presidency which is a political position that is ephemeral and benefits only the benefactor, immediate family and handful of hangers on.
