If re-elected, I’ll perform better in my second term, says Jonathan

Former president Goodluck Jonathan campaigning. Pic used to illustrate the story.

President Goodluck Jonathan has said he would perform better in his second term if elected in the February 14 presidential election.

He stated this on Tuesday when he met with Kogi State traditional rulers in Lokoja, the state capital just before he led other Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, faithful to the Confluence Stadium for the presidential candidate rally.

Mr. Jonathan is the party’s presidential candidate in the election.

He had been fiercely criticised particularly by the opposition for allegedly being incompetent.

In 2011, the president was quoted as saying that he would rule for only one term because what he could not achieve in four years, even if given 100 years, he would not be able to do them.

Mr. Jonathan however told the royal fathers he deserves another term of four years to enable him consolidate on the achievements he has already recorded in his current first term which will end May 29.

The president said most governments do better in their last terms because they have enough time to settle down and plan.

“Whatever we have done in the last four years, we believe that we will even do more in the next four years. Most governments all over the world do better in their second tenure,” Mr. Jonathan said.

“This is because the Presidents are more stable that time, especially in this two-term arrangement. They are more stable. They sit down and plan for the country and focus on key areas.”

The president assured that if elected he would give attention to the Ajaokuta Steel Company of Nigeria.

He also told the traditional rulers that his administration would ensure that steel was included in the nation’s rail system.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Adamu Mu’azu, while addressing the traditional rulers, promised that if voted into power again, the party administration would restore their constitutional roles.

“Our party leader, President Jonathan is leading the crusade to bring you back into the constitution,” Mr. Mu’azu said.

Also speaking, the governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, said the traditional rulers had always supported the transformation agenda of the PDP government and asked them to continue to do so.

Speaking on behalf of the rulers, the Attah Igala, Idakwo Michael Oboni II, asked the president Jonathan to continue with his laudable programmes.

At the presidential rally, Mr. Jonathan assured that he would make Ajaokuta Steel Company work again because all the legal barriers had been removed.

According to him, steel and iron were very crucial to Nigeria’s economy.

He said, “I wish to tell you that all is set to make Ajaokuta Steel Company to work again.”

The president asked the people of Kogi State to vote massively for him and other PDP candidates on February 14 and 28 as they did in 2011.

You lie!!!! SEE WETIN BETTER PEOPLE THINK ABOUT YOU BRO JONATHANI??

The immediate past United States Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary
Clinton, in separate events in New York City said the Nigerian government under
President Goodluck Jonathan, squandered its oil resources, and indirectly helps
corruption to fester in the Boko Haram troubled country.
Hillary Clinton, in her words accused President Jonathan for poor
performance, corruption, mismanagement and insecurity; “The government of
Nigeria has been, in my view, somewhat derelict in its responsibility toward
protecting boys and girls, men and women in northern Nigeria over the last
    years.
“The Nigerian government must accept help –
    particularly intelligence, surveillance and recognizance
help – their troops have to be the ones that (are)
necessary, but they could do a better job if they
accept the offers that are being made.
Nigeria has made bad choices, not hard choices,” Clinton said.
“They have squandered their oil wealth; they have
allowed corruption to fester, and now they are losing
control of parts of their (own) territory because they
    would not make hard choices.”
Mrs. Clinton spoke with ABC-TV’s Robin Roberts on
American national television, and also at a public function
organized by the International Crisis Group.
Clinton stated the following position in the New York
events she attended, challenging the credibility and quality of the country’s
    leadership under President Jonathan’s watch.
“The seizure of these young women by this radical,
extremist group, Boko Haram, is abominable, it’s criminal, it’s an act of
terrorism, and it really merits the fullest
response possible, first and foremost from the government of Nigeria

This was Dumbo in 2011, 4 years ago ….

“I do not make empty promises in my campaign because whatever I promise to do, I had already carried out adequate study to make sure I can accomplish it in the next four years.”

And now story don change for Dumbo …. the shoeless man wants 4 more years to steal more money and nor give a damn!

Somebody should remind the m0ron, Mandela had just 4 years to stablize South Africa. It was Fashola’s perfomance in his first term that ensured his second term re-election.
I wish the Nigerians you got killed by leaving them at the mercy of Boko Haram have a second chance you are now begging for.
I wish the Nigerians that have been killed on the bad East-West road have a second chance you are now begging for

Essentially, you are saying after Jonathan, Nigeria would tumble, since “he is our last best chance”? I guess you mean to say Jona is Jesus (which he isn’t) and anyone who doesn’t follow him would fall to hell. Sorry but I disagree. Thanks for essentially saying the best leader In Nigeria is Jonathan and no one else comes close. I certainly wouldn’t follow your lead, nor his, but I know people in Nigeria that I would follow.

President goodluck jonathan has committed more funds than any other Nigerian president in providing the needed support for our country. Vote GEJ 2015

    • Arabakpura

Because he has received more money than any Nigerian president due to oil selling above $100 during his tenure. Nigerians have also suffered the most during his tenure. Dollar has exchanged twice more to the Naira in his tenure

    • Arabakpura

His word is that he would govern Nigeria for 4years and achieve everything he would want to achieve and that if he cannot succeed in 4 years, he cannot succeed even if he stays for 100 years. He has sent 6 years and is asking for more; man of his word indeed! I suspect that if you give him another 4 years, he would come back to Rivers to tell them that he was sorry for not doing anything for them and that they should wait for his next incarnation

    • Scatter

Very true. So that he can steal US$20bn every 18 months again, eh?

    • Denis_NG

Is that right? Did he also live by his words when he publicly declared that a single term of 4 years is enough to accomplish whatever he sets forth to do, only to turn around now begging for four more years? The truth is that Jonathan doesn’t understand the meaning of “honor”, and as such, is not deserving of a day more beyond May 29, 2015.

    • Amang Raymond

      Is this you, Doyin Okupe?

  • IS.JESUS.CHRIST.A.CHRISTIAN

Mr. Jonathan hardly has any alternative to the staging of a free and fair presidential election devoid of any misuse of the judiciary, the military and the electoral commission. He has no choice but to concede defeat on the 15th of February 2015 when he will be declared beaten hands down. Nigeria will not survive international economic sanctions on top of the present hardship endured by the common man to satisfy the political whims and caprices of a single person. Jonathan will end up an international fugitive and a candidate for the International Criminal Court if he allows the worst-case-scenario take hold on Nigeria. Then he may quickly realize how the 7,500 soldiers of the African Union may be quickly bolstered by aids from all over the world to not only crush the resistance of his private army but also to facilitate his own arrest. Once again, a word should be enough for the wise! TYU

  • Johnson Omale

The people of Kogi State, the traditional leaders inclusive are wiser than what Jo-Nothing thinks. What an insult! You spent 6 years without doing anything for the state and you’re telling them to vote for you. We have made up our minds for Buhari you and your crock Ahmadu Ali can never change us.

  • Worried Mother

    Too late.

  • Jumoke

President Jonathan, please #BringBackOur$9million from South Africa before you leave on May, 29th. It is chicken feed to you, but it can feed the ever growing number of Internally Displaced Persons. Many thanks.

    • Arabakpura

It is not $9m, it is $15m. Please correct yourself. The first was $9.3m and he felt that it was not enough, he added $5.7m. A princely sum in the midst of austerity and insurgency

  • Truthometer

It’s too late, Dumbo. The idea of having you for the next four years is quite unthinkable and nightmarish. It’s time to return back to otuoke. Enough of stealing and cluelessness. Vote for GMB!

    • Dan Arewa

Return back to otuoke? What about the case with the ICC? I doubt if this shoeless liar is not going to prison.

  • Dazmillion

Jonathan you are a stinking liar. The only problem is that Nigerian doesn’t have a better alternative to Buhari.

  • Patriot01

My take on this is that Governments are judged by measurable performance indicators that does not include propaganda, ethnic bigotry, money laundering and oil theft that characterize Nigerian president performance measurement. Granted that Jonathan never lived or worked in any advanced economy and can be excused for his very low expectations on performance, I expect him to have studied qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques to understand performance statistics.

The major issues for determination in the Buhari certificate fraud and this election are that,
    1. Did General Buhari meet the requisite requirement for joining the army at the time?

    2. Now that he had lied on oath that his certificates were with Army, thirty years after he had left the army. Is it possible for a former employee to leave his/her original certificates with his former employer and even for thirty years? What does the Nigerian law on perjury say?

    3. As somebody seeking to be the president of Nigeria, can he really fight corruption while being dishonest as to his qualifications?

    4. What will be the standing of Nigeria in the eyes of comity of nations with a fraudulent and dishonest person as their president?

  • Elis Davia

          • Elis Davia

Who told you that Portharcourt refinery was built by buhari?

          • Elis Davia

There are two refineries at Alesa-Eleme, near Port Harcourt in Nigeria’s southernmost province, Rivers State. The refineries were originally known as Port Harcourt I and Port Harcourt II, but in 1993 the distillation column and tankage at Port Harcourt I was connected to the Vacuum unit and FCC at Port Harcourt II, and the operation of the refinery was integrated, and operated under one management.

          • Elis Davia

In 1965 Shell/BP built Port Harcourt I as a topping and reforming refinery with a distillation capacity of 3 million mt/yr (60,000 bpd). Port Harcourt II was built as a complex refinery with a distillation capacity of 7.5 million mt/yr (150,000 bpd). It came on stream in 1989.

          • Elis Davia

Buhari does not know what corruption means and how to
fight it. He became Nigeria’s Head of State through the corruption of a coup d’état
and he then tried to fight corruption with corruption. Imposing retroactive
decrees and killing Nigerians under them is corruption.

  • Elis Davia

    The seemingly ambitious

Vision 2020/20 means nothing if it doesn’t translate to socio-economic development. GDP means nothing if it does not benefit the people, it’s like a rich man whose kids feed on garri while he and his wife feast on expensive meals. Put the GDP to work developing the nation then you can call the $500 bn a gain. Vision 2020/20 is unattainable from a socio-economic standpoint.

Our 25th position in GDP terms is unsustainable, by the time 2015 is over, Nigeria’s GDP would have dropped thanks to falling oil prices and weakening currency.

In 2010, when Jonathan became acting president, life
expectancy in Nigeria was 47 years. Today, it is 54 years; an improvement of
seven years. Adroit application of SURE-P funds has reduced the maternal
mortality ratio in Nigeria by 26%. Under Jonathan, Nigeria has become Guinea
Worm free; a disease previously affecting 800,000 Nigerians yearly. In the last
six months, there has been no new case of polio in Nigeria. If this goes on for
another two and a half years, Nigeria will be declared polio-free.

    ON CONTINUITY WE STAND

Fellow Nigerians let’s be true to ourselves, to our conscience and collective responsibility. Is it better to vote a man who is a sterling academician, a PHD holder as a matter of fact, or vote someone to whom producing just evidence of first school leaving certificate is an uphill task?

Is it better to vote in someone who has held various democratic positions of leadership and who was in fact
selected as running mate to his predecessor because of his outstanding loyalty, or is it better to vote a known coup-plotter, insubordinate to his own leaders?

Fellow Nigerians, again I ask, is it better to vote in someone whose only track record is that of being exceedingly brutal and autocratic under the military dispensation, or a man who has been a patron to free speech in this country and who debates opponents on the media or through assistants, instead of the usual incarceration and assassination that we have been used to seeing with our past leaders?

Please vote the man of peace, the academic stalwart, the patriotic and loyal GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN.

    God bless you.

Great article but unfortunately there is a huge gap between the government and the people. You can tell that Buhari has no regard for others’ opinions. That wouldn’t have mattered if he knew what he was doing.
