Calm returns to Maiduguri as soldiers, Civilian-JTF foil Boko Haram attack

Calm has returned to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, after hours of shelling, bombardments and shooting between soldiers and Boko Haram insurgents.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that through the combined force of soldiers and operatives of the local vigilante, called Civilian-JTF, hundreds of Boko Haram members were killed and a cache of ammunitions recovered.

Though the operatives of Civilian-JTF said they were still counting and recovering corpses, PREMIUM TIMES gathered that apart from those that died on the frontline, many civilians were reportedly killed by stray bullets and Air Force jet bombings.

In a suburb known as Abujantalakawa along Maiduguri – Biu highway, an old man and his daughter were reportedly hit and killed by an RPG shot by the terrorists.

About 7 persons were killed in a house near Moduganari Street where the Air Force jet fighting the Boko Haram terrorists dropped a bomb.

Many other persons were said to have been injured when another bomb was fired by the military jet near Giwa barracks.

Speaking on the attack, a top security officer in Maiduguri said “though the (Boko Haram) boys were daring, our troops and the Civilian-JTF put up a stiff resistance and left the hoodlums with a bitter experience today. Over 500 of the laid wasted out there. We have recovered several weapons and arms which they abandoned while fleeing”.

Already, residents of the Borno capital have begun to come out of their homes after staying indoors while the attack occurred.

Sunday’s attack is the second by the insurgents in one week as they continue their plot to take the Borno capital. The military had last Sunday foiled a similar plan by the group, who also attacked Konduga and Monguno.

Time to take the fight to the blood thirsty bastards. Common Nigeria, we can do it. Where are the experts in management of violence? We.can

    • baba

We first need a competent commander in chief to finish the job in one week. Sadly, the present C in C is not inspiring.

      • FortB

Please excuse me with your rubbish. You think it’s magic?

        • Naira

Baba said the absolute truth. We need strong and committed commander-in-chief, not the present commander-in-thief we presently have.

  • Khadijah D.

Hmmmmmm…… All this just because they dont want the people’s general to visit maid!

    • larry

Your are correct , just cos buhari does not want to debate he has decided to use bokoharam to divert attention

      • Khadijah D.

How does what is happening in Maiduguri affects a debate happening in Abuja or Lagos?
But its a known fact Gen Buhari is yet to visit Borno and GEJ knows he has failed the people there coz more than 20 LGs are under terrorists!!!!!

How do PDP guys reason? So pathetic!!!

        • larry

Buhari should debate ,he is letting our party APC down by not
debating .This looks bad for our party .We may have to provide an interpreter cos buhari has let us down by not telling us he was a school dropout.

          • Bishop

3rd Feb on channels TV since they are professionals you know

      • Bishop

Debate is on 3rd of feb,Channels Tv. GEJ chose to hang with Dbanj rather than debate in 2011,they didnt make it an issue. Don’t forget BH is tryin to stop APC from visitin maid but kudos to civilian JTF

        • larry

Kudos to the nigerian army . But buhari must debate .lol

  • Emmy

If given enough time, the bastards will regroup and come back to launch more daring attacks on multiple fronts simultaneously. NA should quickly do the needful by taking the war to their enclaves. If it is Sambisa forest, set the whole place ablaze to smoke them out like bush rats. The collateral damage shouldn’t be greater than when allowed to bring the war to the city.
I know this is coming as a ranting of an ignoramus but something must be done to permanently put an end to this madness. This ragtag will continue to do shoot and miss till they finally get lucky. They’ve got nothing to lose. They’ve got free ammunitions, foot soldiers that aren’t different from goat cos their life is worthless to them and time for propaganda.

  • Rev.Alhaji

I’m tired of these news. I’m even tired of suggesting something is common sense.which war has being won with defence alone? Why not take this war to their base in Sambisa and Baga.why allow them to always bring the war to town?.

  • BlackieUmukoro

If the army actually wasted 500 idiots, then that is a big blow to APC, since that is their stronghold, and losing 500 eligible voters is no joke

    • IS.JESUS.CHRIST.A.CHRISTIAN

IT IS A LOST FOR C.A.N ORITSEJIAFOR AND BIAFRA IHEJIRIKA AND ABOVE ALL A LOST TO GOODLOCK JONOTHING AND PDP.

    • Hembe Hembe

With or without 500 votes, APC has lost out. They are minority in the general scheme of Nigeria’s politics.VOTE FOR PRESIDENT JONATHAN

    • mr. Nigeria!

No wonder your name is black coz your heart is also black.

    • Bishop

The civilian-JTF are APC supporters and want elections held. It’s a fact.

  • youprex

At one time in recent past, Nigerian Army couldn’t boost of an APC with a front shooter, it was confirmed that IBB dismantle them. This present administration has only recently acquire few. Here we are criticising GEJ. Secondly, this is the first truly Civil Regime to have involve in a war. We will surely overcome this evil that the so call Religion they practice has rejected.

    • Hembe Hembe

No matter how hard APC may try to discredit the GEJ led federal government, Buhari and APC are failures. Do you remember that WASC had said that they couldnt verify the exam number that Buhari presented to public. PERJURY is hanging on their necks as I write to you now. Perjuryis tantamount to disqualification.UP GEJ.

Funny you. A General without a certificate? Trained by missionaries, commissioned in Britain. Makes so much sense I guess. Why don’t you use WIKI,dont ever rely on FFK etc, PDP recently called Maku a liar don’t forget.

      • Otile

What do you mean by …General without a certificate? Is it unheard of in the North? What is federal character for?

        • Bishop

In missionary days? When did federal character come in? Established in ’95/96. Please try to ask some elders about missionary days.

  • Truthometer

Commander-In-Chief matters. Kick out Commander-In-Thief. Vote out, GEJ. Vote for GMB!

  • Des Wilson

When the Joint Task Force announced publicly its intention to attack Boko Haram what did it expect? At least some of the strategists in Boko Haram know the conventional wisdom that the best form of defence is attack. I would therefore advise that the military authorities should not allow themselves to be stampeded into making public statements which tend to compromise our military operations. The terrorists have access to all our sources of information and have the capacity to hack into government and private computers. Let us not help them to have easier access.

“For every Goliath, God created a David. For every Pharoah, there is a Moses. We are going to war. Everyone of you should go and fortify yourselves”. -Asari Dokubo

One is assuming that since we are in a democracy, we have the right and choice to choose our leaders. It appears we are sorely mistaken. According to the militants of the Niger Delta, we are delusional if we think we have a choice. Their orders are that we must vote for the continuity of the incumbent government or face the wrath of war and as for that man of God, the gates of hell will be open for anyone who opposes the president and votes for the opposition. This, indeed, is most unfortunate. I did not know whether to laugh or cry since we had paraded before us at the Yenagoa Declaration, the serving governor of Bayelsa State, Kingsley Kuku of the amnesty programme and some others with such names as ‘Boyloaf and Tompolo’. Now, these ‘sorry’ lots have warned us that any other outcome will not be acceptable to them.
Is this the way we want to go? It is simply irritating to have such persons speak for a region of the country. What I know, for sure, is that for me as a northerner and card carrying member of the ruling party, it left me cold and puts me off. How dare they threaten me and my liberties as a citizen? In case those in the creeks have not noticed, the price of crude is now at an all time low, so soon enough, they would want to sell with no one to buy except poor Nigerians.
Enough of these childish threats, I say. Asari is behaving like a child whose tuck box has been taken away by mummy whilst Bishop Oyedepo’s utterances are simply sycophantic. Dokubo cannot fathom that his unfettered access to the powers that-be can be curtailed by the decisions of Nigerians at the ballot box or that his livelihood of ripping off his own people can simply be halted due to the possibility of election defeat.
Democracies as we know are not built on threats, but on partnerships and citizen participation. The late President Yar’Adua in his wisdom decided to bring the Niger Delta region into the limelight and empower them after years of neglect by both their leaders in collusion with the oil companies operating in the region. His foresight was hailed as courageous and selfless, and no one can begrudge that. However, what is important is for the likes of Asari to realise is that huge amounts of resources have been poured into the region in the name of amnesty with people like him demanding for ‘marching ground fee’ yet with little to see for the resources. Derivation should have brought far more development to the region in the last decade than what we currently see.
Telling the north that it will be matched bullet for bullet if the results are not in their favour is worrisome. Asari is obviously willing to sacrifice his family to a war. Well, I am certainly not willing to get killed for a cause that I do not believe in. We cannot preach peace from one side of our mouths and yet encourage conflict just because our ego cannot accept the people’s choice if, indeed, that happens.
Nigerians have experienced a bitter civil war which for anyone alive from the age of fifty will not forget in a hurry. Conflict is never in anyone’s favour. We all become losers. Despite all the tension and verbal attacks, and as jittery as the populace is over the coming elections, I strongly doubt Nigerians will resort to arms. Our lives are too precious for that and we have everything to live for.
Though General Danjuma (Rtd) has called for the arrest of these war mongers, we doubt that will happen. However, it is necessary and imperative for the leaders of our country especially from the South-south to call these men to order. They have a dangerous agenda which must not be allowed to even germinate in the minds of any worthy Nigerian. Enough of the war talk. Let us focus on the issues and hope that the best leader emerges.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Cardinal John Onaiyekan in this exclusive interview with Sahara reporters condemned the criticisms directed at the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), following the controversy surrounding his health and certificate.

Above all Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has brought politics of religion, Tribe, North/South dichotomy and hate . Infact, Dr. Goodluck started exhibiting all these vices when he was Governor of Bayelsa State. As a Deputy Governor,he has some obstacles so when he became Governor, it was a payback time . He started punishing the ijaws that brought him to power in the state. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan started playing politics of divide and rule.

He also made sure no project goes to any ijaw village and any Ijaw person is empowered in Bayelsa .This he has continued till date . I served in the State Executive Council with Dr, Goodluck Jonathan and I questioned one of his series of contracts he used in siphoning the Bayelsa State treasury was his singular approval of Two Billion Naira (2,000,000,000.00) for sand stock piling at Yenogoa for Bayelsa indigenes to park and use to start a building project I stood up to oppose it but yet Two Billion Naira was paid but a drop of sand was not dropped.

Why is the army playing defence twice, it does not look good. The army will only wipe this guys out by taking the fight to Boko Haram relentlessly.

  • Psalm 35

Post February 15th, people will be shocked at the turn of events … mark my words

  • LindaO

It’s funny to see APC fanatics still trying to attack GEJ’s actions in the Borno state as part of their bashing campaign. They(ll grasp on to about anything. Now that our troops are winning they question why we are not winning faster. If the threat is dealt with, I’m quite sure they’d find something to say such as “we should have arrested them, not killed them”. Can’t everybody be happy that our country is finally climbing up the hill?

  • Chuckwuebuka Alavavite

Can you imagine how the army would welcome GMB and he APC after all the senseless attacks on their efficiency in the war against BH? An awkward moment for sure. We’re lucky it won’t happen, Nigerians just won’t elect a fraud. I know my people and in adversity we shall prove wise.

  • Franklin Coteh

Many detractors of GEJ still aim their critics at his inability to defend our country, but these last weeks have shown that he can be a very effective Commander-in-Chief. With the recent joint offensive with Cameroon over the terrorists’ positions and the major defeats that were inflicted to them by Chadian troops at their military bases of Gamboru and Ngala, I’ve started to see something in the eyes of Nigerians that warms my heart: hope and proudness in facing these fanatics.

  • Victor Tondibi

Our prayers are with our fellow Nigerians afflicted by the horror of the war against those terrorists. Under GEJ’ leadership, the army has come to your rescue and everyone will rejoice soon over our decisive victory over them.
