Boko Haram: Jonathan, Military Chiefs in secret visit to Maiduguri

President Goodluck Jonathan at a Presidential rally

President Goodluck Jonathan and his military chiefs on Thursday undertook an unexpected visit to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The president and the military high command left for Borno State, the hot bed of Boko Haram insurgency, after attending the Armed Forces Remembrance in Abuja.

A source who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the visit, said Mr. Jonathan and the service chiefs will meet with troops in the north east state.

“The president and the service chiefs left for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport shortly after the ceremony at the National Arcade,” said the source.

“They will be meeting with troops and some community leaders before coming back to Abuja later in the day.”
Boko Haram has killed over 13, 000 Nigerians since 2009 and has seized dozens of towns and villages in Northeast Nigeria.

Mr. Jonathan has come under severe criticisms over the handling of the fight against the group. The president has also been criticised for not meeting with troops who complain of poor equipment and funding for the war.
Boko Haram recently seized Baga, a town in Borno State after sacking the military base there. Amnesty International said the group killed 2,000 residents.

The Nigerian military said only 150 people were killed.

Earlier, at the Remembrance Day parade at the National Arcade, Abuja, Mr. Jonathan had led leaders of Nigeria’s legislature, the judiciary, military and para-military groups to lay wreath in honour of the fallen soldiers.

The president thereafter released white pigeons, signifying freedom, unity, peace and harmony of the country and also signed the register.

  • Spoken word

Why is he going just a month before elections.when almost the whole of Borno is under boko haram control.

    • Tunsj

Politics and condemnation as a weak leader around the world.

      • Spoken word

The guy must have been scared of going to Borno today.from what he is wearing today,it looked like he was wearing a bullet proof vest.

  • Spoken word

Is he now campaigning for boko haram votes.

  • the truth

he finally goes and they say why now, he doesn’t go they say he is insensitive, my people which way?

    • Ebele Factory Child

yeye man, he will make another blunder today.

      • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

        lol

He would probably say “we are all widows in these bloods you are sharing!”

    • Rommel

Goes to do what? did he go as president or PDP presidential candidate because all I see with him are PDP people so what is wrong with what people are asking? do you have conscience?

      • the truth

that just shows that you are really ignorant. And that shows me most of the people on this iste you included is f00lish. That picture was a picture from the files and not a picture from the visit. He went there to visit troops to boost morale. For you to see a picture of the president and hurriedly assume that it is the borno pic just shows my point. you all argue blindly

        • Rommel

Was his visit announced? or are you daft? sometimes before making corrections, check your reasoning before jumping out,can you listen to yourself?

          • the truth

sometimes i begin to wonder if actually some of you even ventured into the fore walls of secondary education, i bet you can’t even boast a waec result just like your leader. The opiom of the arguement you made was on a picture u saw i quote you”because all I see with him are PDP people ” and i was able to convince you that pic wasn’t a pic from the borno trip and you could have figured that out if you read the column or used your number 6. Now i believe you are uneducated because for you to say or insinuate he could have announced his visit to a war throng region(state) is deeply worrisome. Where in the world do you see a commander in chief announce a planned visit to a war zone, it is normally done in secrecy. please try to go back and enroll in secondary education

Not just visiting Maiduguri and running back to Abuja, he should visit Chibok, Gworza and Baga.

  • Debekeme

We have fallen so low as a country. After How long?

God Bless our military, console the widows the orphans.

    I’m just sad.

  • Dumbo

A south African politician had to abuse him before he realised that lots of people had been killed in baga. Same also a 16year old malala had to visit him before he thought of inviting the Chibok girls parents. The truth is he doesn’t care and give a damn. All he cares is winning the elections. What an irresponsible, insensitive and wicked leader . If you like go to Sambisa, no sensible person will vote for you. You have lost it, too late.

  • Wähala

    Hahaha chei!
Just yesterday I worte a scathing comment on SR after the South African youth leader trashed Dumbo’s irresponsibility with none comment on the Baga massacre, today, he has rushed to visit Maidugiri and rushed back to Abuja on the same day. Who said they’re not listening to us should read the same comment I posted here & there (SR) with over 140-upvotes combined, I was mad like a hatter with my lyrics in that outing. Oloshi. Today, his sneaking into town means but one thing to me: Elections can and must be held in Borno (and NE States) since this same security provide for Dumbo to visit can be provided for Jega as well… no gainsaying it. Clown Prince of Otuoke, cowards die many times… Hahaha chei !!!

  • sammyctu ode

This is an election gimmick on the part of jonathan. Nigerians have been putting pressure on him to go and visit the troops at the war fronts but he refused, he couldn’t even visit chibok, the parents have to come to the villa because he is so afraid to visit these troubled spots. What kind of Commander- In- Chief is jonathan? We are not impressed by his visit now because he has never cared for Nigerians. jonathan, you will not get our votes because you are the worst president we ever had.

  • Thetwin

Its too little too late…….elections is just a month away. Our minds have been made up.

  • Truthometer

International press’ pressure i.e. CNN, BBC, MSNBC and Aljazeera finally forced Dumbo to do the right thing. Getting reelected is more important than people’s lives. Shame on this President! But it’s too late, now.

  • Arewabetter

What a political trick? This is just canvassing for votes. This is to tell Nigerians that: Even if you think you’re too old to trick-or-treat, you’re never too old to Trick-or-Vote.

  • PeterPaul1

I tell you, Jona will even visit Baga, Chibok and Sambisa forest just to get re-elected. Why didn’t he visit Chibok after those girls were kidnapped last April?

  • Dimgba

Another “report” by illiterate “journalists.” Why splash this so called story when you do not know the present location of people you claim are visiting a war zone? Irresponsibility. How many times did Presidents Bush, Obama, Prime Ministers Blair, Brown, Cameron visit war zones “secretly” and responsible US and British press kept sealed lips and only reported when it was right to do so, security speaking. Do you know why, Propaganda Times? Your irresponsibility stinks in the already bad situation of the so called Nigerian project.

  • fidel castro

HE NEEDS YOUR VOTES NOW, 3 WEEKS TO ELECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      then lets not give him.

  • Okafor Emeka

For so long they were dancing naked and masturbating because they said he failed to transfer Aso Rock to Maiduguri or Sambisa forest. Their wanking was almost climacteric.
Then, without warning nor announcement, the President touches down in Maiduguri, and they are changing tunes suddenly. Now they ask WHY NOW? WHY NOT BEFORE?
Is it possible these people can ever be satisfied?
Can somebody kindly tell me how many times Gowon touched down on Biafran soil while the war raged?………just a question o, before the vitriolic eruptions start pouring .

    • Rommel

You’re unbelievable, can you listen to yourself?

    • MBee

Because he is looking for votes in less than 30 days. Useless and shoeless clown who never cared about the people’s welfare. Why can’t he go to Bama or Baga rather than going to Maiduguri. Shameless and honourless drunkard will be defeated. Of what use is his touching Maiduguri

    • Emekus

Oh! You made my year. Honestly, I am filled…much filled that I can afford to stay for the next 365 days without food.

Of course those who believe that only Hausa fulani and Yoruba can govern Nigeria will never be satisfied. But we shall see how they will get our resources in the East.

  • deji

Finally, Jonathan got up from his fat lazy a** to visit Borno. Hahahaha. It is too late. I thought some of his supporters gave the excuse that Jonathan do not want to be killed like Ironsi was killed? Even Abatialapa said that there is no value in Jonathan visiting Borno. Yes, it is on record he said it and that is the Presidency spokesperson. What has changed? This is not leadership. This is reactionary .
    Otuoke is loading…..

  • Ifeanyi Chukwujekwu

They wish their president fails. They set traps all about him just to see him fail. They sit in the comfort or discomfort of their rooms and teach the presidency how to run the economy, run the security and even international relations. They know it all.
Since i noticed this character flaws in them, i stopped taking their opinions seriously. May be after their party and candidate lose in the coming election they will come back to what i used to knw them with: sound and tidy presentations.

Besides the death and abduction of innocent citizens, the greatest achievement of Boko Haram is that many Nigerians believe that nothing is working in the country. They believe that the President has achieved nothing even when they ply new roads and use the facilities in remodeled airports.

Winning can’t be every time…Dr Jonathan is a democratic man, so he wants other countries to also taste the sweet victory of winning. This is why Nigeria is not participating. But Jonathan has told the players to bring the cup back to him in 2017 & 2019…and even 2021 in the new Republic of United SE & SS.

BREAKING!!!…Northern Soldiers ran away from the Baga
    =============================================
BBC has reported that in the Baga massacre, Northern Nigerian soldiers just ran away, pulled off the military uniform and exchanged their guns with civilian clothes, leaving the civilians to fight for themselves.

But when the military sentences these military men to death, ‘patriotic’ Nigerians begin to shout and blame Great Jona asking him to pardon the soldiers. The ‘patriotic’ association of Nigeria mainly from the North & West of Nigeria want Jonathan to pardon Boko Haram Islamic terrorists, you want him to pardon Northern soldiers who refuse to fight…and you turn round to blame the Fisherman for the deaths of people killed. …all bcos you believe Nigeria must be governed by Hausa Fulani & Yoruba. It is nonsense. Complete nonsense!

…all those in APC leadership should tell Nigerians what their role was when Yara dua deliberately refused to transmit a letter to his VP while he was sick? These jobless politicians who all kept quiet then or supported the shameful display of ethnic bigotry and hatred, now want power….thinking that Nigerians and especially the East & South have forgotten. Nonsense!

Jonathan will govern from now till 2019 and beyond. Pure & Simple!

    • mk

So Nigeria have 2 SOLDIERS UNIT? You need to further explain yourself…what of the southern soldiers ..u cut short.

Much as Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is already winning, Since no victory is final, We will not stop to let the uninformed public know much about their Buhari. Beyond the trademark of a Bigot, Jingoist, and Fanatical Buhari that the People know, Another virtue that the APC Presidential Candidate has successfully hide until lately is his love and convenience for falsehood.
His certificate mystery was the first manifestation of Alhaji Buhari ability to telling unintelligent lies. While Pa Buhari claimed he had a certificate though with the Military, The APC Spokesperson Alhaji Lai Muhammed believed that General Ibrahim Babangida is keeping Buhari’s credentials due to alleged burglary. Nigerians know the truth in between these serial lies even if they want us to believe that Buhari is above the laws of the land. Otherwise, The APC should be begging INEC to substitute Pa Buhari by now. I believe Somebody should have been disqualified by now for ineligibility.
Now to my core interest which informed this piece, the hollier than thou claim of General Buhari that he is One of Us-The Masses (Poor of the Poorest). Buhari had painted a fake picture that he would not have been able to purchase his party’s nomination form had his Bank Manager not raised loan for him. Not many believed Buhari’s lies being a poor Old Man. But latest revelation has shown that Buhari has fooled the People. The portrait of Zaratu Buhari who is said to be Buhari’s biological Daughter is trending all the online platforms since yesterday. Zaratu is studying in one of the best paid Universities in the United kingdom Surrey University to be precise. Is Zara in UK on loans; I do not think so! The poor People who are being yahoo to contribute their widow’s might into Buhari’s presidential business deserve apology from our usual Presidential Candidate. If Buhari can afford UK education for his Wards, he does not need any bank loans to purchase his nomination form.

Can someone tell me what was the purpose of his visit and why now? If GEJ has been in Borno before now when the election is by the corner I will have said he went to raise the moral of his soldiers and condole those who lost their love ones but now I don’t know. And for those linking Boko Haram to Buhari, they first ask themselves what is the relationship between Muhammed Yusuf (leader of Boko Haram) and the Christians who bailed him out when he was arrested? Equally, what is the relationship between GEJ and Sheriff the alleged sponsor of Boko Haram? What is the relationship between CAN President and Mohammed Yusuf that they had to appeared in photo? Those Igbo Christians serving and retired police officers arrested in Nsuka and they confessed supplying arms to Boko Haram are they Muslims? Boko Haram is an agenda to reduce the number of Muslims in the country.

      POLITRICKS !

    • Namo

What an idiotic comment? Continue to play the ostrich, buck-passing and shadow-chasing. The whole world knows that Boko Haram are an Islamic terror group with an avowed aim of instituting sharia that the northerners, including your Buhari, wanted at the cost of the blood of other Nigerians at the turn of this century when democracy returned. Boko Haram principally grew on the diet of hate – filled preachings and murderous disposition of the Hausa/Fulani/Kanuri Muslim against anyone who professes another faith other than Islam. Keep in mind that we are also not unaware of the permission to kill even fellow Muslims as stated in the Qur’an and Hadiths for the goal of advancing the religion. That is what is happening in the case of Boko Haram. When they were busy bombing churches and slaughtering only Christians, you were jubilant in northern Nigeria, or at best, nonchalant. Now the chicken has come home to roost, and you are here spewing nonsense from your arid intellect. Deal with it.

sorry cl0wn .. too little too late unless he can bring back all those killed through his cowardice …. if he knew it was important to visit troops and boost their morale .. wy after 3 years .. why close to election time … only feeble minds will get tickled by this !

There are only two possible reasons why GEJ went to Borno. It’s either to prepare ground for his campaign team to land in the NE or the comment made by Malema of South Africa tipped his consciousness due to its severe pinching effect.

I wonder who the advisers of the president are who couldn’t seems to think of future but only of the immediate. It does not seem that anyone of them thought of future need to go to the region to campaign when election comes. It’s now – just 3 weeks to election – that they are trying to do damage control. It’s unfortunate that these are the crop of people regarded as our leader.

This is not the first time he is visiting the battle front. It is just that he hates making public announcements of his engagements, because fifth columnists are everywhere

Did this lady say she only had a Master’s Degree? With this expose, she should be awarded a Ph.D right away. This is a brilliant piece of educational research that is only seen in Western cultures and I agree with her totally. We got work to do!!
