Boko Haram: Nigeria election likely factor behind increased attacks – U.S.

The U.S. State Department on Wednesday said Nigeria’s election in February could be a factor behind the sharp increase in attacks by Boko Haram Islamist militants in the north of the country.

Spokeswoman Marie Harf said, however, that the February 14 presidential election should go ahead in spite of the violence which has forced about 20,000 Nigerians to flee to neighbouring countries in recent weeks.

“There has been a sharp escalation in the number of reported casualties. We do believe the election is a factor,’’ Harf told a daily briefing.

Harf said Boko Haram previously used events such as elections to stir up tensions.

However, the election is expected to be a close contest between President Goodluck Jonathan and his leading challenger, Muhammadu Buhari.

“Boko Haram has tended to, particularly around something like an election, use political issues or sensitivities to try to enflame tensions.

“We have seen that as one of their tactics and that is why it is so important to move forward with the election, because we believe it is important,’’ she noted.

Boko Haram’s insurgency began in 2009, but the number and scale of the attacks has risen sharply since 2015 after the government imposed emergency rule in three worst-hit states in northern Nigeria.

Amnesty International has said Boko Haram may have killed some 2,000 people around Jan. 3 in Baga in northern Nigeria.

However, Harf said it was hard to independently verify that figure.

Change everywhere “2015 election would be a replica of June12 were the Nation will unite against a particular candidate” – Apostle John Sulieman”

  • clairvoyance

The PDP are looking for ways to cancel elections in some parts of the country and the country as a whole because they know they can’t win so they have urge Boko haram to increase their attacks.

    • AfricanChild

Spot on! ….I read a document by the British Parliament yesterday where they said ..the ‘new Government in Nigeria will be better to solve the problem of Boko Haram’.. Check Mate. Even the Brits know.

    • David Abiodun

Wrong again. Boko Haram is simply a political agenda. If you understand how a democratic government works, you will easily know where to connect unrest such as Boko Haram. Moreover, you will quickly understand its purpose. My suggestion to you is go back and investigate how the several arms of your government works and how they are connected back to back with each other to form your government. Once you do that successfully, review the Boko Haram situation again.

  • Joe

Why is America like this?. The tempo of attack by book haram has always being like this, and it has not increased or decreased. People should know that the only countries US respects are countries that have nukes or planning to have one. Check it!.

    • Tunsj

Remember that the only thing the US cares about are their own interests.

      • Walter

        Thanks man, very simply put

  • Alcindo Satori

Well, well, well, so now America has confirmed that buhari’s bros have upped the ante to ensure their candidate is elected? Don’t worry, we understand. And that is why here and now, we proclaim Je sui GEJ today, tomorrow, and until 2019!

    • Tunsj

You meant to say Je sui Buhari.

      • Alcindo Satori

I don’t mistype my friend, unfortunately so… Nice try though! Je sui GEJ today, tomorrow, and the next 4 years! !

  • Ken

GEJ is set to win the election. The change we need is GEJ. Boko haram has always tried to stop GEJ from running for the election. But they cant stop GEJ as God has designed him to rule for more 4 years.

    • AfricanChild

mstheeew…..flatter yourself, deep inside you, you know the truth.

    • Walter

The change we needed was GEJ 6 FREAKING YEARS AGO. What happened? NOTHING!!!

  • Smith Scott

Even US knows who is behind Boko Haram. Buhari boys escalated the attack to discredit Jonathan.

    • AfricanChild

Hahahaha….olodo, go back to school. ordinary logical reasoning you just failed.

    • rhad

How would Buhari do that when North is one of his stronghold. Common sense is scarce ooo

  • Shuaibu Bola Victor

Wonderful! APC & GMB should bury their heads in shame. Their secret is known all over the world.

    • Ukpaka

You should be ashamed of yourself for that comment. Is this what you deduced from reading the above passage?

      • Alcindo Satori

…and if you deduced otherwise, please be our guest and divulge what you deduced — since you’re in a ‘divulgatory’ mode. Hehehehehe!!!

        • AfricanChild

If it is uncertain that GEJ wins next month wont he attempt to stop the election? That is what this story tell. I know you understand but like your Oga youre deceiving yourselves.

          • Alcindo Satori

Listen here kiddo, you/Buhari/APC cannot forestall the inevitable. And you know what else? You’re better served channeling your energy on something else boy — you’re fighting a lost cause.

          • David Abiodun

AfricanChild, have you heard of the term reverse psychology? Already Nigerians have been psychologically abused in ways I doubt you can even imagine. Your statement clearly shows your mental incapacity to understand methods or strategies. Do you even know what a diversions is? And that is the list of any offensive strategy. That is the problem with many Nigerians. Morons but think they know anything at all. They talk gibberish because clown a lot. They are misinformed and completely deluded by religion. None of which they have archaeological and/or historical documented evidence to show.

Hahahaha. Tell me what you understand the report to mean? Whether connotative or denotative, the meanings are same. I like your type to join us. GEJ is the man. Vote GEJ.

        • Walter

Your written english is really terrible as indicated by @AfricanChild . Get a grip man!

          • D1

He was one of GEJ students, what do you think?

          • Shuaibu Bola Victor

            To God be the glory.

    • AfricanChild

..so your own brains tells you that Buhari will carry bomb and kill his potential voters to reduce the number of his votes, or do you think people in Maiduguri, Baga and Gome will vote for Jonathan? O-low-dow!!

      • Shuaibu Bola Victor

If that is your believe or your analysis mode, be it. It serve you right.

        • AfricanChild

oh nooo, you again.. ‘your believe’ ..and ‘your analysis mode’ ??? wtf? what school did you go to?

          • Walter

            lol

  • AfricanChild

Guys…guys…guys..stop been ignorant or pretentious, do not change the obvious meaning of that observation by the US. The Boko Haram attack increased in other to stop elections in NE States and that will prevent GEJ from handing over power and thereby extends his presidency. The US have seen that and thats why they insisted that the election must go on. The tempo shows APC is going to win so there is intense attack to stop elections in that area. That is not going o happen.

  • AfricanChild

Check out this quote …..”“We have seen that as one of their tactics and that is why it is so important to move forward with the election, because we believe it is important,’’ she noted.”.. so why is this election ‘important’ if it is continuation of PDP ineptitude? English Comprehension my friends….Englsih Comprehension. I dont blame you your Oga sef no Understand English… “Henry Okah was procurred to assasinate me… and he was roped in by South African and Nigerian Intelligence…” Dumbo Jumbo.

    • Shuaibu Bola Victor

You seem to be sounding very aggressive because truth has come out in open. GMB & APC are finally exposed and their diabolic acts known all over the world. What you may wish to do now is to begin to identify yourself with light if not your sin will find you out and you will be humiliated eventually. GEJ we know, GEJ we do. Vote GEJ for a better Nigeria.

      • AfricanChild

..you cant even write simple comment in english.. “you seem to be sounding”..thats why you dont understand the message above. Go back to school.

The US, Friend or Foe? Does US really value Black lives?…Why not sell attack Choppers instead of giving free warships?
    ================================================================================================
When Washington attempted to defend the US’s refusal to sell Corbra Choppers to Nigeria, it went ahead to give areas of military co-operation and dealings in recent times. But there was something missing. The US never mentioned the warships it has been sending as ‘free’ gift to Nigeria. Did you hear any mention of 2 Naval warships sent by the US to Nigeria in mid 2011 & 2013? .. added to those 2 warships is another warship that arrived weeks ago.

The attack ships are the biggest armament received by Nigeria since its civil war ended in 1970. Yet the US tactically refused to mention it in their briefing for obvious reasons – the war ships were given even FREE to help Nigeria protect US investments in the Niger Delta…so as Nigeria fights terrorists in the desert, the US is busy sending war ships to be used in waters millions of kilometers down south.
But US wicked no be small…and slow thinking Nigerians, many with advanced degrees, will be so stuuuuuuupeeeeeeeed to support such a transparently mischievous nation which in only interested in my oil & its benefit to the US economy. This is one reason the SS&SE want their separate states so as to free itself from the US which itself seem to have little or no value for black lives. Nonsense!

…and worse, PT will be blocking comments critical of US. Shame no dey catch una self? Where do your allegiances lie? With Nigeria abi with US? ..But I must commend PT for sacking that useless staff that has been blocking my comments bcos I noticed my comments are released these days without hijack…God bless PT for only that reason – for stopping the senseless bias w.r.t. blocking of comments. Nonsense!

    • Maria

“…millions of kilometers down south…” Really? And you are educated?

  • Etomi

Buhari’s brothers Boko Haram unleash mayhem in their tactical campaign for their mentor..
And then turn around to use it as a tool of blackmail against GEJ…
The blood of the unfortunate departed will cry against Buhari in this election, for so much blood has been shed because of him and in support of him!!!!!

Which change is that after you have used your logics to slaughtering Nigerians in the name of Boko Haram. we are wise enough and no way for APC to ruling in Nigeria

  • Olumide Lawal

Of course Boko Haram will murder and pillage in the run up to the elections. More attacks means Buhari can blame president Jonathan. The more people die, the more his government is criticized. They are trying to push MGB’s agenda forward.

  • Akinfenwa Mikel

Logic 101: If Boko Haram increases attacks, and if Muhammadu Buhari is a former negotiator for Boko Haram with a stronghold in the Muslim north, then Buhari is complicit in the Boko Haram attacks. It makes sense the Haram attacks are in the north, since these are the strongholds where the Nigerian military can’t reach. Haram and Buhari intimidate those from rival tribes and non-Muslims, harassing them out of the country and keeping them from ballots in order to silence their opposition. The incorruptible Buhari is in this way corrupt, and a victory in the election would mean a military state run on this same fear, intimidation and cronyism.

    • Obi

While President Jonathan has dedicated significant efforts to ensure the population is able to vote in the upcoming elections in the face of potential Boko Haram attacks, ex military dictator Buhari is likely to use any evidence of violence during election day to disregard the elections as not free or fair and call for further aggression throughout the country in his name. It’s time we all take a close look at who will lead the fight against the Islamist insurgency in the country, and who will use their attacks as an excuse for more violence bring further troubles to Nigeria. Think the answer is pretty obvious here.

  • Ayodele Ohakim

People have been trying to deny this, but there is strong evidence pointing out a connection between Boko Haram and GMB. He’s always been very vocal about his radical views on Islam, just like in 2001 in a seminary in Kaduna where he openly reasserted his “total involvement towards Sharia and its quick propagation in the country”. What to think about what Sheikh Haliru, one of the founders of Boko Haram said, a few years ago, about Mohammadu Buhari and Alhaji Abubaka Atiku having documents proving their financial involvment in the organisation? With these news and the fact that we now we face more and more pressure from Boko as they kill and silence non-muslim tribes, people have to start questionning what are Buhari’s real religious and political goals for the country.

Wont a responsible media crosscheck their facts before publishing articles on a sensitive national security issue like the release of kabiru sokoto?
Is it too much to ask from a responsible media to balance their story by hearing from all the stakeholders?
Freedom of speech is not absolute it must be balanced with responsibility to the society.
Sometimes you can easily deduce the motive behind a writeup or a sensational publication.
There could be no excuse for irresponsible publications.
