Cardinal Onaiyekan wants fiery cleric, Mbaka, sanctioned over comments on Jonathan

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Onaiyekan, has called for sanctions against a Catholic priest, Ejike Mbaka, who publicly urged Nigerians to vote President Goodluck Jonathan out.

Mr. Onaiyekan was quoted by Thisday newspaper as saying that based on the rules of the church, Reverend Father Mbaka, who heads the Adoration Ministry congregation in Enugu, ought to be sanctioned for his outburst.

He criticised the cleric for going overboard in his sermon and insinuating that the Jonathan administration is plagued with “bad luck” and poor performance.

Father Mbaka had on December 31, 2014, told Nigerians to use the forthcoming general election to vote Mr. Jonathan out.

Speaking to thousands of parishioners, he said the president had failed to stem the tide of insecurity and corruption in the country.

Mr. Mbaka said that although Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate is a Muslim, he would bring the needed change in Nigeria.

Cardinal Onaiyekan disassociated the Catholic Church in Nigeria from Father Mbaka’s statements.

“Mbaka will take responsibilities for his own actions. I do not believe in my mind that the way things are in Nigeria, any Catholic priest has the mandate to decide which of the political contestants should be voted for,” Cardinal Onaiyekan said.

“What most of us will do is to tell people to vote according to their conscience and then, we tell the authorities to allow people to vote freely and fairly.

“Like I said, Mbaka is a priest of his own type. If he was in my archdioceses, I would have sanctioned him long ago for the kind of things and utterances that he makes.

“But, he is not under my diocese; he has a bishop to handle that if there is any need. I hope that people are not thinking that we are sending Mbaka to talk rubbish.

“If you want to hear anything even not official but at least, authoritative, then, you listen to the bishops. Rather than him and I don’t see any bishop talking that way,” said the Cardinal.

He, however, cautioned the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, to desist from campaigns of calumny.

Despite the prophecies of doom ahead of the 2015 elections, Cardinal Onaiyekan said, “PDP and APC have no right to disorganise Nigeria.”

The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigam, had also said Father Mbaka’s remarks never represented the position of the Catholic Church of Nigeria.

He said the fiery Enugu priest merely numbers among the over 30 million Catholic faithful in the country, adding that the official position of the church can only be communicated through the Bishops Conference.

Deluded Mr. Onaiyekan, why not show us where in the bible clerics were sanctioned for speaking the truth to corrupt authorities. Do Nigerians not admire clerics like Bishop Desmond Tutu and Martin Luther King who spoke against bad govt?

Why did you not call for the sanction when same Mbaka endorsed GEJ in 2011 or last month.

Mr. Onaiyekan, my two cents advice; you don’t talk while you are “chopping”. Do your “chopping” quietly

    • Man_Enough

i wish onaiyekan could read this.

  • Holy Saint

Ebi like say his holiness was invited to aso rock to come and defend his church. Rev Fr Mbaka has the right, as a Nigerian, to express him opinion; and as a clergy, to guide people to righteousness – or abi no be so Bible teach us to do?!

  • amazing2012

What ever sanction, he has said the truth ! And that shall set us free !!

    • tundemash

      don’t mind him.
      sanction ko, sanction ni ?
Fr. Mbaka commands some followership what does Mr. Onaiyekan command and who is he ?
Why did he not call for the sanction when same Mbaka endorsed GEJ in 2011 or last month.

The man is “chopping” and wants to talk at same time; not possible !

      • amazing2012

        You are right

  • tundemash

“Mbaka will take responsibilities for his own actions. I do not believe in my mind that the way things are in Nigeria, any Catholic priest has the mandate to decide which of the political contestants should be voted for,” Cardinal Onaiyekan said.

Mr. Onaiyekan …. stop muddling the water because you are “chopping”.
    1. Father Mbaka never said he spoke for the generality of the Catholic church.
    2. Fr. Mbaka is first a Nigerian before being a Catholic an he’s for good or for bad by policies of the govt.
    3. Did you criticise same Fr. Mbaka when he endorsed Dumbo in 2011 and last month or was he speaking for the Catholic church then.
    4. Where were you when Cardial Olubunmi Okogie was hammering the military authorities of then ?
    5. Fr. Mbaka commands some following, what do you command and who are u ?

    • Holy Saint

Onaiyekan commands the Ghana Must Go sharing wing of the Catholic Church in Abuja aka Abuja Diocese!

      • tundemash

oh ! His tantrum now makes sense. Fr. Mbaka’s sermon don put sand for his Abuja garri be that .

    • Wähala

Nr. 4 should be… Where were you when Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie called on Dumbo not to seek re-election, that he has failed as a leader?

      • Okiemute

He was at Yaba rehabilitation centre. But where were you too…when the Papacy in Rome cautioned Mr Okogie to be more of a Priest than politician? Check the Guardian newspapers of May 15th 1998.

        • Ckukwuni

Thank you for that smart response. Most of these boys are internet children of yesterday who were probably too young to remember the caution given to then arch Bishop Okogie. Information is truly power. That was a most succinct response.

          • endingNaija

We are in a serious conversation on the fate of our country. We do not need the garbage of outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan Nebu and that of PDPig.

        • Ckukwuni

Thank you for that smart response. Most of these boys are internet children of yesterday who were probably too young to remember the caution given to then arch Bishop Okogie. Information is truly power. That was a most succinct response.

          • endingNaija

We do not need this PDPig garbage-period

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

      Baba Onaiyekan,

All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to keep quiet, especially where silence means consent!

Father has spoken his mind as the Spirit and his conscience dictated.

Those are attributes of an ideal Christian.

  • Wähala

The word is already out of the horse’s mouth. If you sanction Fr. Mbaka, how is that going to bring back the message from those who have heard him? Mba nu, it won’t. This na gra-gra Abuja pressure a little too late in coming… Mbaka never said he spoke in official capacity and Freedom of Speech certainly includes him. His damage has already been done, Ohanaeze-Ndigbo and APGA have withdrawn their support for JoDumbo citing Mbaka’s fiery outburst. The CBCN themselves sent a powerful delegation to Dumbo to state the same views Fr. Mbaka shared with his congregation, should the Pope sanction the Bishops for so doing? Mba kwa, freedom of speech is a universal and fundamental human right. Methinks, these “long robes” are simply jealous of the reactions Fr. Mbaka was able to galvanize because they well know that the voice of the Pope to the Italian Govt. is a Commandment from Above. Touch Mbaka, Touch Ndigbo… Nonsense!

    • tundemash

you forgot to add MEND has also joined in.
Why did he not call for the sanction when same Mbaka endorsed GEJ in 2011 or last month?

      They are all desperados !

      • Wähala

Don’t mind him. Half of PDP Governors shunned Dumbo’s re-election campaign flag off in Abuja today, maybe they too should be sanctioned for No-Shows… everybody but Onaiyekan can read the writing on the wall while he sits there waiting for Mbaka to follow Catholic due process… Clown indeed he is.

        • tundemash

I have just been told that Onaiyekan presides over the Catholic Ghana-must-go branch, Abuja Diocese so his tantrum is understandable .

  • Thepeople

I wish more so called Bishops and Cardinals would speak more about the plight of the masses so well articulated by fr Mbaka then people would believe more in the church. If cardinal Onaiyekan sanctions Fr Mbaka for speaking for the masses, God would surely sanction him.

  • endingNaija

Guys take it easy. The Catholic Church is a Church of procedure. The Church has NOT FUNDAMENTALLY disagreed with Rev Mbaka ON SUBSTANCE. But and but the Church has raised the issue of PROCEDURE. In other words -please read closely- the Church is saying that or implying that though Rev Mbaka is right ON SUBSTANCE he should have …..” See what I mean? Yes you may hammer the Catholic Church of Nigeria for dodging and for failing to come out openly as Rev Mbaka as an individual priest heading a ministry has done in favour of truth, change and economic and social justice free of corruption, but you cannot hammer the Church for insisting that it has a procedure. Actually, in dire situation as we have it in Nigeria where NO ONE CAN AFFORD TO SIT ON THE FENCE BETWEEN CHANGE AND THE STATUS QUO , you can disagree with the Catholic Church of Nigeria and its procedure because we are really in a dire situation that calls to question “standard procedure” (yes we are dying and someone is talking about procedure) but we must concede to the Church that it has a procedure and it must defend its procedure. This may be one situation where WE THE PEOPLE , WE the congregation will leave the leaders of the Church behind for a while until we meet again after we have effected THE CHANGE! On this? As for me and my family we are with Rev Mbaka. I am with Rev Mbaka. We are with Rev Mbaka. Nigerians are with Rev Mbaka.

    • tundemash

why was that s1lly procedure not applied when same Fr. Mbaka endorsed Dumbo in 2011 and when HipoPatience came calling last month?
      Procedure ko, ritual ni !

      • endingNaija

Yes that is part of the issue tundemash. A close reading of the Catholic Church will show that they do defend vigorously the interests of the masses. So do not let us throw the baby away with the bath water on this. We are building a COMMON AND UNITED FRONT. I can assure you that despite the position of the Catholic Church today, we will need the Catholic Church of Nigeria down the road to join a BIGGER SOCIAL AND NATIONAL FRONT with which to throw away and finally sink and bury the regime of outgoing president King Goodluck Jonathan Nebu. In a battle you increase your forces, you do not deplete them. The Catholic Church of Nigeria is definitely an ally, ally of CHANGE despite their cagey position on Rev Mbaka. Look tunde, read between the lines. The position of the Catholic Church is on Rev Mbaka’s statement. Logically, the position of the Catholic Church on Rev Mbaka’s statement IS NOT the position of the Catholic Church of Nigeria on the situation in Nigeria. Look tundemash, the Catholic Church in Nigeria CANNOT stand in support of oppression because it must look towards the UNIVERSAL SOCIAL TEACHING OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH which is FUNDAMENTALLY against oppression. That is one is clear and non-negotiable. The Catholic Church DOES NOT DILUTE ITS SOCIAL TEACHINGS WHICH ARE ALWAYS IN FAVOUR OF THE MASSES AND WORKING PEOPLE UNIVERSALLY. So? Take it easy on the Catholic Church in Nigeria on this one. We need one another. We must increase the forces of change. We must protect Rev Mbaka AGAINST ANY ATTACK AND SANCTION. IF Rev Mbaka is sanctioned in Nigeria by any interest, we will go over and above the Church in NIgeria, and go outside Nigeria and DEFEND AND PROTECT REV MBAKA-period. So be tactical and understand the Catholic Church and its procedure.

        • tundemash

I do not think Mr Onaiyekan’s view represent the view of the Catholic church just as Fr. Mbaka’s sermon was also his personal opinion.

          • endingNaija

Yes you are right and we are with Rev Mbaka-period! Mr. Onaiyekan can keep his procedural view. We are with Rev Mbaka all the way on this and nothing by the special grace of God will and can happen to Rev Mbaka.

        • MuozobaClement

You don’t know anything. Just shut up! You are the type that leads priests astray in the name of praising them even when they do the wrong thing. Catholic Church knows how to handle her affairs. The Catholic priests are the only trained religious ministers in the world. It takes one at least 17 years to become a Catholic priest. Therefore, the priests must be different from thugs and should not allow sentiments rule them.

          • endingNaija

You just spewed a PDPig garbage! There is nothing you can do. Your Goodluck Jonathan is an outgoing president-period. Nothing can bring Goodluck Jonathan back. He is GONE forever. And your PDPig garbage cannot help. Now back to the Catholic Church affairs. Yes, the Catholic Church has its procedure. But Rev Mbaka is right so long as what he said is his view. That Rev Mbaka expressed his views does not contradict the fact that the Catholic Church has procedure. And that the Catholic Church has procedure does not make Rev Mbaka expression of his views to be wrong. Actually, if and when the issue comes up, we will show that the Catholic Church procedure defends and protects Rev Mbaka’s expression of his view so long as he did not claim his view is the view of the Catholic Church of Nigeria. See small boy? This is why Rev Mbaka cannot be sanctioned because he never said he spoke for the Catholic Church of Nigeria or the Universal Catholic Church. MuozobaClement PDPig and outgoing President Jonathan campaigner, we are talking about serious issues here. We love the Catholic Church but WE THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIA ARE IN SUPPORT OF REV MBAKA ON HIS STATEMENT. If he is sanctioned in Nigeria by the Catholic Church of Nigeria, , WE THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIA , WE THE CONGREGATION IN NIGERIA WILL TAKE THE ISSUE TO ROME AND REVERSE IT.-Trust me. We are all on this issue and NOTHING CAN AND WILL HAPPEN TO REV MBAKA BY THE SPECIAL GRACE OF GOD. Having said that you can sink and bury yourself in your PDPig garbage. Outgoing President King Goodluck Jonathan Nebu is past tense in Nigerian politics. Nigerian voters gave him six years. He messed them up. That is enough. He needs to go.

          • MuozobaClement

You can go on with your abuses. But all I can see is that you don’t know any single thing about the Catholic Church. Moreover, you talked of how you will defend Mbaka. You can’t defend him because defense is never a thing of the mob. Moreover, God himself sufficiently defends His Church and priests and not the mob that defends them. If you are abreast with your history, it’s only the Catholic Church that can stick out its neck in defense of the masses and has done it over the century. However, this doesn’t entail ascending the pulpit and insulting your leader and shouting a rival political party’s slogan. Believe it or not, in the understanding of any intelligent mind, such a person has descended into politics like a common politician and may not be giving a message from the ‘Oracle of the Holy Spirit’. Being in the spirit doesn’t mean losing your senses. Moreover, our Lord Jesus Christ fought for social justice intelligently, without being a rabble-rouser, and without attracting unnecessary attention and publicity. A good and noble intention may be badly prosecuted and that’s not the way of the Catholic Church. This is what singles the Catholic Church out from the multiplicity of these new generation churches that seek unnecessary attention. You can go on with your insults but think well. Remember Mbaka and Chimaroke saga, then Mbaka and Union Bank saga and then give your assessment. You are not a Catholic. I am a convinced Catholic, ready to die for my faith. When there is any cause to defend either the Church or her priests, you will run away like the traitorous Judas. Jesus was not carried away by the multitude of bread and prosperity seekers!

          • endingNaija

Please check your first post. You will see the word ‘Shut Up” in your post which is a response to mine. So? You justfiably deserve the scorn and venom you got from me. No apologies about that. Next time you watch your words before you post. The issues are clear. I say Shut up in response to your garbage. In the fight to exit the most corrupt regime ever in Africa-the regime of the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan, there is no sitting on the fence. If you sit on the fence like you are trying to do then you will be put in your proper place, as I have done. What should you do? State your position on the need for change in Nigeria. State your position on the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan’s corrupt and evil regime that has kept the Chibok girls in the dark forest for more than a year. If one of them is your daughter what will you do? State your position on how Mr. Jonathan uses Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke to steal $20b of public funds from NNPC under the the budgetary guise that it cannot be accounted for. And on Rev Mbaka, WE THE PEOPLE are waiting for that sanction. Take it from us, we know how the Catholic Church operates. The Catholic Church of Nigeria WILL NEVER SANCTION Rev Mbaka. If they do, please note this, we will take this to Rome. With a Pope who is not comfortable with too much orthodoxy, we have the Pope on our side i.e. on the side of the Nigerian poor. This is the reason the Catholic Church in Nigeria will NEVER move against Rev Mbaka-not when we have Pope Francis as the Pope-period!

The Catholic Church has procedure and that is the reason why people are asking why the procedure was not applied when the Rev. was praising the President but the Church only now realize there is a procedure when the same Rev. spoke against the president. If the Church chased the Rev. away, it will be a loss for Catholic and gain for wherever the Rev goes. You don’t get the Anointing of the Holy Spirit because of your title. Tabansi who was to be canonized was not a bishop.
What is most interesting is that not a single person contradicted the facts the Rev adduced as the basis for his declaration.

  • True Nigerian

If you didn’t proclaim that Rev. Ejike Mbaka should be sanctioned for publicly praising and endorsing Jonathan when he did so, I don’t know what the foundation is for proclaiming that he should be sanctioned for publicly criticising Jonathan’s government. Both actions have exactly the same foundation, the same connotation and the same effect in the sense that, either way, they are public pronouncements of personal views in favour, or to the detriment, of one candidate or another. Therefore, if there is a law that priests should not speak their minds in disapporoval of a candidate, the same law must necessarily prohibit the approval of such candidate too.

On that basis, Cardinal Onaiyekan’s argument is disappointingly poor on logic, common sense, equity, fairness and justice!

    • Thank you. Have a good night rest.

    • endingNaija

Ole, you just woke up eh eh . The Catholic Church will always be on the side of truth, justice for the poor, a society free of corruption. Outgoing President Jonathan’s govt is FULL of corruption. There is no way the Catholic Church of Nigeria or the Universal Catholic Church will ever be associated with the survival of outgoing President Jonathan’s government. Rev Mbaka is right. Nothing will happen to him. The Catholic Chruch of Nigeria and the Universal Catholic Church will NEVER sanction Rev Mbaka. Remember what Pope Francis said? On his assumption of the papacy Pope Francis said and I quote “How I wish the Church is a Church of the poor, I wish for a poor Church…” Nigeria under President Jonathan has been hijacked by the corrupt few thieving rich people a la Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke (of $20b NNPC money) -Goodluck Jonathan’s woman. And Rev Mbaka VOICED the concerns of the poor. We are waiting for the view of the Catholic Church of Nigeria and the Universal Catholic Church ON THE SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF THE POOR AND THE MOST VULNERABLE UNDER THE REGIME OF THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT JONATHAN. WE the people of Nigeria, WE the congregation will take this outside Nigeria up to Rome before the Pope if Rev Mbaka is sanctioned. But like I said the respected Cardinal Onaiyekan ONLY talked about PROCEDURE. The Cardinal DID NOT talk about SUBSTANCE of Rev Mbaka’s statements. Please read the Cardinal CLOSELY and read the Cardinal’s expressed views on Nigerian situation and body language historically. The expressed views of Cardinal Onaiyekan and body language on the corruption under the administration of the outgoing president Jonathan ARE NOT DIFFERENT FROM THE VIEWS OF REV MBAKA. Please go and read Cardinal Onaiyekan historically on Nigeria under the outgoing President Jonathan. You will see what I mean. So how can a Cardinal whose expressed views are not different from those of Rev Mbaka on Nigeria under Goodluck Jonathan sanction a Reverend Father whose views align with his? Not possible otherwise the respected Cardinal and the Catholic Church of Nigeria will run into serious contradiction. The Catholic Church Fathers ARE WELL READ. they WILL NEVER BOX THEMSELVES INTO THAT KIND OF CONTRADICTION. But on procedure , yes both are right. Rev Mbaka NEVER said his views represent the views of the Catholic Church of Nigeria, and Cardinal Onaiyekan NEVER said the views of Rev Mbaka represent the views of the Catholic Church of Nigeria. So there is no dispute and no disagreement. So you Ole cannot appropriate the respected Cardinal Onaiyekan to serve the survival interests of the outgoing President of Nigeria Mr. King Goodluck Jonathan Nebuchadnezzar.

      • Sword of Damocles

I think your response above is interesting as I had not previously heard or read of the cardinal before. I am in agreement with you, however I do believe that the intent of the Cardinal’s words is an attempt to blunt, the effect of the blunt and stunning words of Father Mpaka on the South Eastern region. i think we can reasonably conclude that the sermon had the effect of “detonated explosives in an enclosed underground bunker” in the SE region. This is the primary reason why I think this Cardinal is VERY POLITICAL in the mold of Cardinal Borgia, who went on to become Pope Alexander VI. I would like to hear your thoughts about the Cardinal attempting to blunt the effects of Father Mpaka’s sermon.

        • endingNaija

Yes truly, all people of faith, hope, justice and corruption free society, of a society that works for the poor like I know the Universal Catholic Church and the Catholic Church in Nigeria both do work for the poor and most vulnerable in our society are in a dilemma at Cardinal Onaiyekan’s sudden remarks. Honestly, I was shocked that he made such a statement critical of Rev Mbaka. If PT did not quote him directly, I would almost have concluded that he -Cardinal Onaiyekan was misquoted. Why? I will outline them (i) Rev Mbaka’s views on corruption and its consequences on the poor in Nigeria under Mr. Goodluck Jonathan are consistent with the social teaching of the Catholic Church both local and Universal. (ii) Cardinal Onaiyekan has publicly stated views against corruption under the regime of the outgoing Nigerian president-Mr. Jonathan which are drawn from the Catholic Church’s social teaching. (iii) There is NO DIFFERENCE under close scrutiny between the anti -corruption views of Rev Mbaka and the anti-corruption views of Cardinal Onaiyekan. So what is the Cardinal up to? I do not know. Hence, my take on the issue of procedure-which is that Cardinal Onaiyekan does not disgaree with the anti-corruption views of Rev Mbaka but that like most Catholics, he -the Cardinal is not comfortable with things that are not done procedurally. Catholics have this thing with procedure. But you see, Rev Mbaka has NOT said his views are the views of the Catholic Church in Nigeria or the Universal Catholic Church even when those views are correctly, validly and soundly drawn from the social teachings of the Catholic Church. So? Rev Mbaka has not really “violated” laid down Catholic Church procedures! I know that many of us are genuinely uncomfortable with the respected Cardinal’s views on Rev Mbaka, and really I am uncomfortable with his views on Rev Mbaka too. But where we may disagree slightly is the suggestion that Cardinal Onaiyekan is playing the card of the outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan. AS AT TODAY I do not think so. But if BY TOMORROW it is clear that Cardinal Onaiyekan is playing the card of a decadent, dead, corrupt regime of Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, I will be the first to apologise openly to readers and admit that I misread the Cardinal. You see proceduralists are orthodox people. They prefer to err on the side of orthodoxy and procedure. I suspect strongly that Cardinal Onaiyekan belongs to this category. For example, they will see that a house is burning and people are dying including women and children. They see that we THE PEOPLE on the street who are bystanders can actually put out the fire and save lives. This is what Rev Mbaka in his alliance with WE THE PEOPLE have done-to move and put out a Goodluck Jonathan corrupt fire of poverty and decadence that is destroying and wrecking Nigeria. But proceduralists and those who defend orthodoxy may also want to put out the fire and save lives. But they will talk about the law, they will say the law does not allow us to jump into the fire and put it out ourselves even when that will work. They will ask for the phone number of fire brigade officers when they know the phone system does not work. They will ask us to email the fire brigade officers when they know that there is no NEPA to power our computers and there is no cheap internet services etc. The consequence is that nothing will be done and we may lose the building and lives-in other words lose the country called Nigeria under the corrupt fire of Mr. Goodluck Jonathan. But some proceduralists with social conscience like Cardinal Onaiyekan who is a Catholic(his Catholicism puts him in the sphere of human beings with social conscience because it is very difficult to be a Catholic without conscience) are genuinely concerned but their methods are too conventional to quickly put out the raging fire. This is the way of proceduralists and I suspect Cardinal Onaiyekan belongs to this category in the Church. Sword of Damocles, this is a huge dilemma. This is our dilemma. This is the dilemma of WE THE PEOPLE and THE CONGREGATION that feel the pinch. Rev Mbaka is right. We will fight it up to Rome if the local Church sanctions him. And I know that WE THE PEOPLE will win before God. And on the teachings of Pope Francis himself we will let him see that Rev Mbaka has only carried out the teaching of the Pope by siding with the poor and the most vulnerable in Nigeria. I will want to see how the Pope will then agree with the sanction of a Reverend Father -Rev Mbaka-that does EXACTLY what he the Pope has said.! But and but I am less inclined TODAY to go after Cardinal Onaiyekan because his antecedents do not justify that and in a raging battle to save Nigeria the end of which we do not know yet we must increase the forces of change , you do not deplete them. I think Cardinal Onaiyekan can still be counted as part of the forces of Change despite his obvious mistake on Rev Mbaka.

          • Sword of Damocles

Your comments always seem to compel me to use the word interesting. i think it means that you “broaden my horizon”. let me elucidate, until your comment, i never really saw the issue as an intra-church issue within the Catholic Church of Nigeria(orthodoxy vs liberalism). Furthermore, given your explanation that there is not much difference between the Rev. and the Cardinal’s view on the issue of corruption under this administration, I think it is fair to assume that the Cardinal’s response may not have had nefarious intent. i do wish it would be impressed upon the distinguished Cardinal that, “indeed timing is EVERYTHING”. Keep up the good work on the behalf of our country, strength and honor always.

@sword and ending, I am loving the way you guys are engaging in this discussion. This is exactly what we need. There is nothing wrong with having an opinion, but having an opinion comes with the responsibility of having the ability to articulate and win opposing view to your side. Some people think if they come here on SR to scream or lie enough will make them believable or accepted. They are nothing but nuisance. Anyways, May God Bless Nigeria!

People like you lose me by your illogical arguments and disgraceful partisanship. Where were you when the same Mbaka praised GEJ and Mama Peace worshipped at the Adoration Ground? Why didn’t you and your type condemn him then? Where was this same Onaiyekan then? If you cannot be fair and logical in your intervention, no one will respect you, either in your household or in this public forum.

SHELL AGREES to pay MISERABLE 3,000 Pounds ONLY for oil spills & destruction of Niger Delta
    =============================================================================
In a 15th June 2010 report, BBC’s reporter, Caroline Duffield, described Nigeria’s Niger Delta as the “Oil pollution capital’ of the world”…
I searched frantically through Nigerian newspapers both off line & online, none reported it. While the media houses bask in that misplaced euphoria in reporting stories regarding corruption here and there, commensurate energy is never dissipated on issues relating to the real corruption – The incessant and continual pollution of my Niger Delta…

The fight to get to the center and control my inherited resources gets dirtier by the seconds…and no one cares about my polluted ecosystem. I am a UNIPORT student and we are a family of fishermen…My Mama can no longer pay my tuition & accommodation bcos our rivers in Bodo and environs have been destroyed with spills and so she and others can no longer fish in the waters…even to eat anything planted from our village is suicidal bcos morbid toxins are in land, water and air. So, how do I pay my school fees? No more source of livelihood.

To add salt to injury, Shell BP just decided in far away UK court, that it will pay ONLY 2,000 Pounds, approximately $3,000 to every fisherman & farmer in the immediate vicinity. What will we do with a miserable 3,000 Pounds when Billions are extracted from our soil? This is why we need our country bcos this is intolerable and we can’t take it no more….What do we do? Do we abandon our community…and let the useless terrorist oil companies continue to decimate our Niger Delta? Or do I join the noble Niger Delta freedom fighters to CONFRONT and protect our ecosystem?

  • Sword of Damocles

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan is VERY political, and here are the reasons:

the Cardinal stated that “If he was in my archdioceses, I would have sanctioned him long ago for the kind of things and utterances that he makes. But, he is not under my diocese, he has a bishop to handle that if there is any need.”
But guess what? LIKE YOU STATED, HE IS NOT IN YOUR DIOCESE!! So why are you commenting on this matter in such a manner(public) that might bring disrepute to the Holy See? I am confident that the Vatican WOULD HAVE PREFERRED the Cardinal to have brought this matter up with the Bishop in charge of Father Mpaka’s archdiocese through a letter(copied to the Vatican). In all fairness, Father Mpaka’s sermon can be construed as being political, however ministry means looking out/working for the downtrodden & havenots(Nigerian masses), thus overt politics is very murky in this instance. The same cannot be said for the Archbishop of Abuja, the overarching interest is not that of the masses, but of a certain confused person from Otuoke, who allegedly earned a doctorate of philosophy in basket-weaving, ooops i meant zoology. Again the Cardinal said that Father Mpaka has a Bishop to handle it, SHOULD THE NEED ARISE. So if the Cardinal is now speaking because “there is a need”, then maybe the Cardinal can notify Father Mpaka’s Bishop-in-charge. Ha,! I guess he already has: with a megaphone. The distinguished Archbishop appears to entertain vigorous ambition.

    • Man_Enough

Onaiyekan has not only indirectly and openly impugned the authority and integrity of mbarka’s bishop but has incited
him against the reverend father. In which case I will quote a portion of the bible for the bishop: Proverb 30:10 Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he course thee and thou be found guilty.

People have forgotten the words he spoke, he said for the feature of our childrens and nation we need change. Jonathan has failed, what has he done to the many children that are going to school beard footed? Nothing, rather than looting and negligence of the duty of the office of the president, insecurity, corruption, ignorance selfcentre, earthinism, regionalism, and trying to give us (Christians) a bad name. Jonathan should resign honorably or we will vote him out, that’s the simple true

I have NEVER RESPECTED THIS SO CALLED CARDINAL ONAIYEKAN because he is too political and has joined jonathan, patience, pdp and all the looters of Nigeria to steal, loot and corrupt all the Nigeria’s good values. This man who called himself a man of God should emulate the South American Catholic Church and bold Priests who used their spiritual positions to FREE their people from slavery from their military dictators and evil corrupt officials. However, he has decided to abandon the Nigerian people for pecks and dollars from the jonathan government. He would NEVER SMMELL THE GATE OF HEAVEN BUT WILL ROT IN HELL. Another thing people don’t know about him is that he is an alcoholic based on my own personal assessment because I once travelled with him on KLM from Amsterdam to Nigeria on business class and through out the trip, he was just ordering many glasses of red wine. I was shocked a catholic priest was drinking so much. When he stood up to go to the bathroom, he was staggering and not coordinated. Useless priest.

    • Otile

You see. False accusation of a man of God will only lead you to disaster. Please stop your blasphemy. If the Cardinal was your fellow Muslim or any kind of Mohammedan cleric you would have good words for him.

  • Bunduma Mohammed

Rev Father spoke the truh. I believe Cardinal Okugie would said the same thing. Only political cardinal like you would fear the truth. 70% of chibok girlls left to boko haram by Jonathan are christains. Cardinal Onaiyekan should uphold the respect of the church and leave Mbaka to be. If you listen to the chuch members whom Rev. Mbaka spoke to they totally agreed with him. The chuch must speak the truth.

    • TRUTH MASTER

Where was Onaiyekan when Mbaka endorsed Jonathan and prayed for Mama Peace? Why is Onaiyekan talking now that the endorsement has shifted to the other side? Who is Onaiyekan holding brief for? If anyone sanctions Mbaka and God endorsed him, what does it matter?

      • jude L/A USA

you are the REAL truth master!

  • TRUTH MASTER

Time will tell who spoke the truth between Mbaka and Onaiyekan. Suffice it to say that Mbaka’s homily was logical and empirical. I believe that the church loses its relevance where it acts more in a cocoon than in full support of the people against bad governance.

I however think that they should only relocate temporarily because of the fact that GEJ has to win to complete his 2terms. Ndigbo are not fools so they should do the needful to escape the massacre. The most reverend and bishop Onaiyekan should again go through the book of Jeremiah. The prophet was a fiery critic of
government in power. Or has he forgotten Uriah who told David to his face about his sins? We need men who are bold enough to come against evil not those who see evil and keep mum. Mbarka’s personal opinion is enough for me. I do not need a cooked testament of any bishop’s conference.

  • Bhadmos Taiwo

Why are you people attacking the Man and leaving His message unattended to? Why are we all so pretentious. Where will all these hypocrisies and deceits lead us? Leave the Man alone, He has spoken the minds of 90% of Nigerians. Many of you spiritual leaders are as corrupt and arrogant as all these politicians, that is why you allow them to pollute the Pulpit ! If you people are afraid to rebuke the Authority because you’re afraid of death or open rebuke from them, allow the few Men of God who are bold enough to confront them to speak out and denounce the evils that are pervading our society! The poor Man has spoken! Let the Government come and refute or condemn him. He has not taken Christmas Gifts from them like some of you, so he should be bold enough to speak and condemn the impunity and corruption going on in the Nation. Who-so-ever attack or condemn this Man again is more-or-less happy with the sufferings our poor girls are undergoing inside Sambissa forest and the lives of many innocent school children and adults that had gone with this insurgency? If any of your Children were among those kidnapped or killed , will you be happy to attack this man? Shame on all of you!

House, pls kindly provide answer to this question. Who is the first incumbent president to contest election in Nigeria and Lost?

  • Tonnero

There is no conflict between what Onaiyekan said and what Mbaka did. Mbaka never said he was speaking for the Catholic Church which should rest Onaiyekan’s concern that some might think so. While I like what Mbaka said, I think Onaiyekan is right: allowing individual fathers to preach from the pulpits openly endorsing their own preferred candidate will create anarchy in the Church. However, in the same vein, Onaiyekan should be bold enough to tell Jonathan to stop using Church pulpits to preach his candidacy. If he wants to go to church to worship, let him by all means but he should stop grabbing the microphone and addressing the nation from the pulpit. I wonder what PDPigs would be saying today if, every Friday, Buhari were to go to the mosque, and address national issues through the microphones of Imams.

YOU CANNOT SEPARATE RELIGION FROM POLITICS!!! Judge not so that you will not be judged -so says the Bible and therefore caution is strongly advised here. Before we proceed please Ladies and Gentlemen can we do small ARITHMETIC. Politics looks after the Masses including their well-being, security, justice and what have you and Religion does exactly the same. Correct me if I am wrong please. A good Politician is the one who guarantees a good qualitative life, ensures that there is justice and freedom for the Massess under their care and most importantly fight injustice or failure of the above expectations by canvassing against them either as a ruling party or as an opposition.. The Religious Leaders do exactly the same including speaking out against injustice, insecurity, corruption, exploitation and the list is endless. So if RELIGION and POLITICS have commom denominator the Massess who both are looking after, SEPERATION OF BOTH ARMS is near impossibility (QED) . Theory and practical are not the same. It is disgusting that most so called Religious Leaders will sit idly by and in their comfort zone when people are being butchered like chickens, Mosques and churches bombed with reckless abandon, Recklessness at high quaters, monumental corruption, abject poverty amidst plenty of God’s given resources and yet they only mutter or gossip in their bedrooms at the alter of political correctness. TRUTH most be said including bitter one and it is expected that the Religious Leaders should have the bols to spearhead the fight or be in the forefront and not at the rear side. Fr Mbaka-the only LONE, BOLD VOICE in the Wilderness deserves commendation and definitely not condemnation. Even he himself knew that he will not be loved by saying the bitter truth as people prefer the sweet lie. I am sure he will be comforted that those who spearheaded attack on Jesus Christ were the High Priests and so even Jesus the Saviour was not spared for doing the right thing. This will always be your consolation. It is not too late for other Religious Leaders to stand up and be counted by not abdicating their responsibility and that is protection of their FLOCKS.
