State of Jersey to return £315 million Abacha loot to Nigeria

Former military Head of State, Sani Abacha

The State of Jersey, the biggest territory in the Channels Island, is set to return to Nigeria £315 million stolen by a former military head of state, Sani Abacha.

The Ballif of Jersey, Michael Birt, stated this at a dinner in honour of Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Dalhatu Tafida, during a State visit to the Island.

Mr. Birt, who doubles as the Island’s Civic Head of State and ceremonial head, is the highest ranking official in the Jersey order of precedence.

The Island, famous for its transparent banking services, had previously repatriated in two tranches £140 million pounds of the loot.

The money was laundered on behalf of Mr. Abacha by Raj Bhojwani, an Indian businessman.

Mr. Bhojwani is currently serving an eight-year sentence in a UK prison.

Speaking on Jersey’s financial services and global perception of the Island, Mr. Birt said that the repatriated loot was in line with ongoing campaign against money laundering.

“We have done a lot to clean up the image of the Island as a safe haven for stolen wealth,” he said.

“What we have in place is a transparent and legal finance heaven where only legal funds can be deposited and accessed by investors,” Mr. Birt said.

In his response, Mr Tafida commended Mr. Birt for the Island’s transparent banking sector, and informed him of the Nigerian government’s commitment to fighting corruption and strengthening its anti-graft agencies.

The high commissioner also spoke on the investment opportunities in all sectors of the economy, while laying emphasis on the nation’s GDP, and high return on investment rate.

“The array of investment opportunities that abound in the country and generous incentives available to investors in all sectors of the economy, has continued to make it a global investment destination,” he stressed.

The dinner was attended by top officials from the Jersey government and members of Mr. Tafida’s delegation.

The visit marks the beginning of a bi-lateral relations with the Jersey.

Officials from Jersey are expected to carry out a similar visit to Nigeria. (NAN)

Exchange of hand, from thief to thief !

  • @Amuwospeaks

I hope our govt will not sqander it

    • Tunsj

They have already divided the $315 million. I bet you that some of the money will be used for Jonathan’s reelection.

  • Kamal Kamoru

Yet one fake charge and bail lawyer who calls himself ‘kay soyemi’ turned a blind eye when his mentor Papa Buhari said Abacha never stole a dime?
The same fake ‘anti corruption crusader’ went into hiding when the unfortunate news broke that his hero was going about ‘donating’ money to delegates in imo state! Yet his comments on this same site is well documented where he blasted Atiku for also ‘donating’ N2.5M to delegates in Sokoto.
The HYPOCRISY of these APC e-goons knows no bounds!
    BIG SHAME!

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

Yet your god father in Aso Rock gave him a national honour and dropped charges against him and his family, instead of seeking to recover every stolen kobo!

Worse still, here is one Mr. Kamoru jumping up and down like some inebriated chimpanzee that is drunk on cheap Sapele Water, moaning about a couple of millions in Naira.

No surprise sha!! The product of mushroom “under the decking” schools cannot but express mouldy opinions!

      • Kamal Kamoru

Sorry to disappoint you but I am no fan of GEJ(though I would prefer him to the pretenders and Liars in APC anyday). By giving him a national honor, he(GEJ) was just being true to type. However, you present your general as squeaky clean..so why not comment on his saying that Abacha never stole a kobo??? You alwys struggle to avoid issues by going on a long windy journey. Uve said nothing oga! Tell us what could have possibly made yur mentor say Abacha never stole a kobo??
Skip it if it’s too hard..i understand

        • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

True to type? As in what?

Like I advised previously, you need to grow brains between your ears and not in Uranus!

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

      June 2014 –

“Transparency International condemned the dropping of the charges against Mohammed Abacha, saying the Federal Government is encouraging impunity in the polity by its action.

“Allowing the theft of public funds to go unpunished sends the wrong message that those with powerful connections can act with impunity. The case should have been fully prosecuted, and the government has not given adequate reasons for dropping the charges,” read a statement signed by TI Regional Director for sub-Saharan Africa, Chantal Uwimana.

However, Mr. Adoke said the criminal proceeding originally instituted against the Abachas has forced them to discontinue contesting cases filed in Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.”

There were only 4 statements or comments on this thread – 2 were spams- and none of the other two belonged to an inebriated chimpanzee that is drunk on cheap Sapele Water.

Looters beware, what happened to Abacha will happen to all Nigerian looters in respective of wheither they are civilian or military. Abacha is just an example. Abacha killed people claiming it was NADECO the way Goodluck is killing today in the name of boko haram. Please be careful and remember the sanctity of human life, the day God will send angels after you , you will regret coming to this world.
when pharaoh was killing the children of Israel he was enjoying it but when his cup was full he was destroyed.
Make una advise these people. stop all these killings today.

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

Sad thing is that every stolen kobo of Abacha that is returned to Nigeria has simply disappeared like a drop of water on the desert sands.

This is a proper case of “ole gbe, ole gba”! (from one thief to another).

  • osogbo

Abacha and others like him have many institutions named after them for looting the country into poverty. WHAT HAS BEFALLEN THIS COUNTRY?

    • umolu

That is Nigeria for you , naming government institutions after known thieves. What is the incentive for decency? Also what makes it easy for a so called leader to steal undetected such large amounts of money?

  • George

Its a liar; ABACHA NEVER STOLE A KOBO PLEASE AS BUHARI

    • Frank

Shhh: Don’t let charge and bail lawyer Kay soyemi(Expired) hear you oo.
      Na abuse dey come o!

  • Otile

From the illegal regimes of Babangida, Abacha, Abusalami to the
administrations of Ogagun and Yar’Adua all contract awards were done
directly by the so called heads of state or presidents. General Abacha
    became nocturnal, signing contracts at

    night but drinking and
sleeping soundly in the day. Ogagun himself regularly slept with Moji
    after those tiring night contracts.

    How come nobody has heard
about GEJ awarding lucrative contracts to his kits and kins? Can the Yorubas give him a round of applause for that good deed?

  • PatrickCarter

Raj Bhojwani, I am also a Sindhi …
Shame on you , you BASTARD.
I hope you die in jail and your entire FUCKING family also dies in a car crash.
    SHAME ON YOU< YOU MOTHER-FUCKER
