Senate divided over emergency rule in Borno, Adamawa, Yobe

Nigeria's Senate Chamber, otherwise known as the Red Chamber

The Senate on Tuesday suspended the consideration of President Goodluck Jonathan’s letter requesting the extension of a state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, after divisions over whether or not to approve the request.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that shortly after the introduction of the motion by the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egbe, the mood among a section of the senate changed.

Some of the senators were obviously against another extension of the emergency in the region.

NAN further reports that a swift intervention of the Senate President, David Mark, to ensure consideration of the letter was loudly rebuffed by voice vote.

At that point, the Senate Leader invoked Rule 40 and moved a motion for a closed-door session, thereby compelling visitors to leave the chamber.

Addressing newsmen after the closed session, Bello Tukur, Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, said nothing concrete was achieved from the closed-door session.

“The Senate has adjourned the sitting till tomorrow to consider the letter for the extension of state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe from Mr. President, Goodluck Jonathan,’’ he said.

The state of emergency earlier declared in the region had elapsed on Nov.16.

On his part, Ali Ndume (PDP-Borno) while speaking to newsmen after the session, said another extension of a state of emergency should not have been contemplated by the president.

“The situation in the Northeast region of the country had remained the same even after two of such extensions; so what gives us the conviction that a state of emergency is the solution to the problem,’’ Mr. Ndume said. (NAN)

Hmmm!Interesting!Things are beginning to fall apart for GEJ.Pockets of rebellion springing up here and there. We’re watching.

Leslie, things fell apart for him and his party a long time ago! Things are now moving up to a crescendo. Take a ring side seat so you can watch the game well.

At these point, GEJ will start realising weather he has support in the north or not. And for PDP, our prayer have start to catch-up with you. GEJ will be the person that will destroy you ( shegiyar-Uwa) because you have sock enough of our blood.

What did you expect Alibaba Ndume to do, to allow emergency and lose free oil money? You know him more than that.

The state of emergency has achieved nothing. It was in place when the Chibok girls were abducted and taken away. It was in place when our students were killed in Potiskum and Buni Yadi. It is in place even now that the terrorists are striking at will. Let the President and his team think out of the box for a better way to tackle the insurgency.

And let the National Assembly know that once they approve an extension of the state emergency, they have sealed the fate of voters in the three states. This is PDP’s plan to disenfranchise voters in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, which are all opposition strongholds. PDP must not be allowed to profit from its cluelessness

Gbam with gbosa! The “Anarchy Agenda” is to cause enough havoc & mayhem to scare voters away or cancel elections in restive states. It has blown up in their faces because we keep talking about it. No one should profit from evil, the Senators should deny the request, it is ineffective and spurious. The House under Tambuwal will follow suit. Thanks for keeping the Bunsen burning!

It is not a matter of Northern vs Southern Senators, it’s about “security accountability”. What have the three previous SoE lockdowns achieved? Nada! Only a phool continues doing the same phoolish thing over-n-over expecting different results and getting burnt each time. If anything, the State of Emergency has been an encumbrance to effective battle against the insurgents because of lack of communication networks in affected enclaves. Under it, there’s no evidence the Bokos have been tamed. Instead, they’ve grown stronger and more brazen in kidnapping our 300 virgins, cutting-off the heads of 60 sleeping students and bombing to pieces those who woke up to go for classes. So, it’s only political permutation to allow the insurgency fester and avail the PDP via evil Dumbo with the acquiescence of corrupt fake Prof. Jega, the opportunity to cancel 2015 elections in restive States… after all, it is folly to expect internally displaced persons (IDP’s) to return to the cities they escaped from to exercise their civic rights, where Boko Haram have already cancelled primaries held in their “Caliphates”. The Senate ati House under Tambuwal should decline Dumbo’s request on grounds of, “three strikes and you’re out” cliché. Se bi dem say na America we dey copycat, dat na America’s rule! If it must be approved, Dumbo must visit any of the affected states and give the Senators a “first-hand” report of the status quo, and a requisite relocation of Defense ati INEC headquarters to any of the SoE States, and the physical presence of Badeh ati Jega in Boko Haram Caliphate if they’re not just clowns… Animals!
