Vice President Namadi Sambo submitted the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s presidential nomination forms on President Goodluck Jonathan’s behalf Friday, in what appeared an indication the two men may again run together in 2015.
There have been speculations Mr. Jonathan may drop Mr. Sambo and select from one of three governors from the north jostling to upstage the vice president.
Mr. Jonathan’s failure to categorically mention Mr. Sambo’s name as his vice, last Tuesday when he declared to run for a second term, intensified the reports.
Governors Ibrahim Shema of Katsina, Isa Yuguda of Bauchi and Sule Lamido of Jigawa are all said to be battling to be picked as the running mate to the president.
Although the three governors are completing their second terms in office, none of them have signified interest to run for either the Senate, like most of their colleagues, or any elective office at all.
Mr. Sambo who spoke briefly on Friday after submitting the expression of interest and nomination forms of the PDP, told the party’s officials who gathered at the Wadata plaza Secretariat of the party that he was submitting the forms on behalf of the president, and called on Nigerians to support Mr. Jonathan’s administration by re-electing him to continue with his transformation agenda.
“President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has pushed and moved Nigeria forward making it the best in Africa and 26th in the world,” he said.
When PREMIUM TIMES contacted Umar Sani, the spokesperson of Mr. Sambo, to confirm if Mr. Sambo is the running mate of Mr. Jonathan, he said via an SMS “we cannot be the judges in our own cause, you should read the body language of Mr. President and be the judge of that”.
The PDP National Chairman, Ahmadu Muazu, who also spoke briefly at the event said he was happy and felt fulfilled that the president is returning his forms after being asked by majority members of the party and Nigerians to seek re-election.
“I am also happy that all the organs of the party presided over by me has agreed to endorse you unanimously as the candidate of the party,” Mr. Muazu said. “It is a sign of the confidence that party members has on you and is also a result of the total commitment you have put for the development of Nigeria.”
The Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Godswill Akpabio, in a chat with reporters after the presentation also re-echoed his earlier stand that all PDP governors have resolved not to challenge the president because he has performed very well.
Among Mr. Sambo’s entourage to Wadata Plaza were the Senate President, David Mark, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, House Leader, Mulikat Akande as well as Governors Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa and Ibrahim Dankwambo
Others were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, and many members of the federal cabinet such as Petroleum Minister, Diezani Maduekwe, Idris Umar of Transportation, Bala Mohammed, FCT, Mohammed Adoke, the AGF, Tanimu Turaki, Special Duties and Jumoke Akinjide, the Minister of State, FCT.
