Nigeria police to lock down Abuja for Jonathan

The Nigeria police have issued a warning on the diversion of vehicular traffic around the Eagle Square in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal capital city.

In a statement, the police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said there will be traffic diversion around the Eagle Square on Tuesday for “a major event”.

Mr. Ojukwu also advised Abuja residents to make use of alternative routes, as vehicular traffic would be diverted from most of the roads leading in and out of Eagle Square Central Business District, Abuja between 5 a.m. and 8p.m. on Tuesday, November 11.

He also said the police regretted any inconvenience the vehicular diversion within the area would cause the public.

Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan, is scheduled to declare his ambition for re-election on Tuesday at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

Although, three other presidential aspirants: former head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar who declared their ambition were given adequate security by the police in Abuja, precautionary measures as this one were not made available to them.

The city was not locked down even for Mr. Buhari who held his declaration ceremony at the same Eagle Square.

When asked for details of Tuesday’s “major event” and why there would be a lockdown of major routes in the city, the police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, told PREMIUM TIMES, he could not say what event was taking place at the Eagle Square for security reasons.

“It is not the duty of the police to tell you who will be declaring or not but we are saying, there will be a major event tomorrow and that is it,” Mr. Ojukwu said.

He also said the police was only doing a public service which it had been assigned to for the citizens.
