The First Lady, Patience Jonathan, has resigned her appointment as Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil Service.

Mrs. Jonathan was appointed to the position in July 2012 by Governor Seriake Dickson, five months into his administration.

Sources in the Bayelsa state government told PREMIUM TIMES the First Lady decided to quit following “irreconcilable differences with Governor Dickson”.

The source did not provide details. He only said she resigned over political differences between her and the governor over issues bothering on the politics of the state.

“The whole thing appears to be political. It appears Madam is not happy with the governor. With her resignation, the battle line has been drawn,” the source said.

Governor Dickson has faced criticisms for appointing Mrs. Jonathan as one of the 17 permanent secretaries he appointed into the state civil service shortly after he assumed duties.

Many Nigerians had wondered why the governor would appoint someone and place her on salary when it was clear she was not available to discharge the responsibility of her office.

Some people at the time had accused Mr. Dickson of taking political sycophancy too far.

The First Lady, in her letter of resignation, opted for voluntary retirement, a source said.

A source in the Bayelsa State Ministry of Education said the ministry had already computed and finalized her terminal benefits but declined to disclose the sum due her.

Another senior official of the ministry also confirmed the development and said it was true the First Lady resigned.

When contacted by PREMIUM TIMES, Bayelsa Commissioner for Education, Salo Adikumo, said he too had resigned as Commissioner for Education to pursue his own political ambition.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dickson, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said he was in Abuja, not in Yenagoa, and was therefore not aware of Mrs. Jonathan’s resignation.

Mrs. Jonathan’s spokesperson, Ayo Adewuyi, did not answer or return calls seeking comment.

  • Wähala

Gejitoes vs. Hippolytes… sycophancy taken to the brinks!
Gov. Dickson should/would have fired her for bringing “Pitakwa Politics” into restive Bayelsa State with the retinue of kidnappings, gas line vandalism that has seen power supply drop to an All-Time Low of 2,500MWs, oil bunkering to the tune of 300,000bpd stolen (according to Dr. NOI) from our Bayelsa Loading Terminal, piracy and all sorts allegations about a N33bn Govt. House under construction… Dickson needs some peace of mind to wash & clear his head with Sapele Water, biko. Lady Hippo has been AWOL and pocketing undisclosed amount of state funds and it’s about time to put a screeching stop to it. Stooge-Governorship has a limit just like elasticity of human patience. Dickson is the Governor and should be allowed to Govern… battle line or not, he has the option of defecting to where his freedom to Govern will be guaranteed… Nonsense!

Good riddance to bad rubbish and shameful English. This woman is an epitome of shame with her rickety English. In fact, the queen would shed tears with this Shepopotamus’ murder of the language. She is definitely a bad PR for Bayelsa Civil Service. I’m sure na only she waka come.

  • True Nigerian

She resigns after 3 years of an eyesore for this country. A shameless Presidency with exetremly poor judgement and a fuulish governor with the most deplorable sycophancy! Utterly disgraceful!

And yet, you hear some people trying to tell you that this kind of horrendous judgement is acceptable. If Nigerians don’t disgrace Jonathan in next year’s Presidential polls, then something is seriously wrong with the people of this country.

  • Screw-em

She is resigning to run for the office of “co-president”,,,,a woman with “standard seven” primary school certificate as “permanent Secretary”?…Lawdy lord help us…..only in Pajamas country with cuff links….what a shame!!!!

“He only said she resigned over political differences between her and the governor over issues bothering on the politics of the state.” PREMIUM TIMES, please write English if you want to write English. Do not be in a hurry to publish because you want to be celebrated. What has “bothering” got to do with the sentence; or is the writer just waking up from a bad dream? In short, the entire sentence sounds clumsy.

  • Uzosumma

The first time I’m hearing position of “super ” Permanent Secretary. Virgin Atlantic says that there is a first time.

  • Truthometer

Umblelah, why? There is god ooo!!!

  • Ologbonlolode

Hmmmm … wonder shall never cease in Nigeria. Resigning for political differences with the governor? If these people are not just pure illiterates and uncouth, don’t they know that as a Permanent Secretary, you are a career civil servants and much as you may have political beliefs and vote for a party of your choice, you must not be seen to be partisan or flaunt your party membership since your loyalty is to the State and not to a governor or political office holders? Now, I am beginning to understand the full import of Wole Soyinka’s admonition to Mrs. Patience Jonathan that she should try to be a lady first before being a first lady. Nigeria Presidency has never had it this bad in all our years of existence as a nation. This ones shall pass away in 2015!

  • Thepeople

We always trust the first lady to give us a laugh.

    • Zirem

This ain’t funny, its pathetic. This reminds me of Idi Amins days. Isn’t being a permanent secretary is actually an office with duties and not a title? As if that is not enough blonder, the ministry had already prepared her entitlement when real workers,I mean civil servant who have worked for years are unable to get their entitlement after retirements. Why do we Nigerians allow such mistreatment from someone who literally begged for your votes and when they come begin we still let them. Tufia kwa!!!

  • kwango

First lady has resigned to reapply as full time ghost perm sec with benefits.

  • Otile

The First Lady is a very good woman. See how she voluntarily resigned to avoid tension. If Hajiya Turai was made a Perm Sec you would need a bulldozer to remover her from the office.

    • iyoma

Don’t even go there. This has nothing to do with turai. Pls allow the sleeping dog lie.

    • iyoma

You are so wicked to make such callous assumption about Turai.

  • Comfortkay

There is no Constitutional Impetus for the Office of the first lady so Madam Patience Jonathan accepted to serve as Permanent Sec and Now she resigns ? I dey laugh this PDP has completely finished Nigeria everywhere. It is amazing the kind of nonesense that is coming out of political circle and the kind of evil perpetrated daily under the nose of the Nigerian President even when he claim to be ignorant, he will set up committees to check how long his wife performs as a Permanent Secretary when she is suppose to be inside Aso Rock cooking for her beloved husband and President of Nigeria.
