Attack on Edo legislative quarters ‘new height’ of impunity under Jonathan – APC

Lai Mohammed

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has strongly condemned the apparently-orchestrated attack on Edo legislative quarters on Saturday, saying the attack raised the level of impunity under the Jonathan Administration to a level not even contemplated in the days of military rule.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said based on the ease with which thugs invaded a facility that should be well secured and the ample time they had to damage over 30 cars and inflict injuries on legislators and their families, there is no question that the attack was carried out with the collusion of the lawless PDP and the increasingly-partisan police.

”Gov. Adams Oshiomhole said the government got intelligence report on the attack and informed the State Police Commissioner. Instead of sending in reinforcement to prevent the attack, the few policemen attached to the quarters were withdrawn before the attack. This is
another indication of a police force that is being bankrolled by all taxpayers becoming shamelessly partisan and engaging in selective implementation of its constitutional role of protecting the lives and property of the citizenry,” it said.

APC said, however, that the atmosphere for the attack was created by a President whose body language encourages impunity, a President who has converted the police and the army to his party’s militia, a President who presides over a government that is incapable of maintaining law and order, not to talk of protecting the citizens.

The party said whether in Rivers State, where the police was used to harass the opposition, including the Governor; Ekiti, where the police stood by while thugs led by a Governor-elect Ayodele Fayose were beating Judges and sacking courts, the same Ekiti, where the PDP-led Federal Government has used the police and other security agents toevent courts from re-opening as ordered by the National Judicial Council, or Edo, where the police have offered protection to renegade lawmakers at the expense of the majority, the Jonathan Administration has given a free rein to impunity like never before in the history of Nigeria.

”The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) takes orders only from the President. Therefore, where the President decides to turn the police to his personal militia for use in vindictive and vendetta attacks, the IGP is not only required to comply, he is also expected to pass the same orders down the hierarchy. This is what is happening across the country.

”The danger, however, is that when a society descends into anarchy, the same police will not escape the consequences, and will also not be able to handle the outcome of its collusion as professionalism would have deserted it and discipline compromised. By becoming partisan, the police force is destroying itself,” it said.

APC said the attack on the Edo legislative quarters on Saturday would have been prevented if the PDP thugs who molested Gov. Oshiomhole and top officials of his Administration, when they went to the airport to receive President Jonathan a few days earlier, had been censured for their unacceptable and barbaric actions.

”By failing to sanction them accordingly, the powers that be have simply given a seal of approval to their actions and empowered them to do more, hence they became emboldened to attack the legislative quarters,” the party said.

APC reminded President Jonathan that attacks like the one in Edo, which the conniving police apparently allowed to happen, form part of the reasons some foreign governments, concerned about the way the Nigerian security agencies have used the weapons supplied to them to violate the human rights of citizens, have refused to sell arms to Nigeria.

”Which human rights violation could be more egregious than the police-sanctioned attacks on defenceless citizens in Edo State on Saturday?” the party queried, and called on the international community to pay a very close attention to the impunity in Nigeria, especially ahead of next year’s general elections.

”It can only be imagined what role the police and other security agencies that have been heavily compromised will play during the elections. It is therefore imperative for the international observers who will be coming for the elections to take this into consideration in their report on the processes before, during and after the elections,” it said.

APC however warned that those who are engaging in impunity today, just because they are in power, should realize that they will not be in power forever, and that one day they will account for their deeds.

Mr Lai Mohammed, the last time I checked, Nigeria was operating a federal system and a federal constitution. So, can you tell Nigerians when President Jonathan resigned his from his Office as President and became the Governor of Edo State? Propaganda has limit and I believe that it is high time you drop this your Goebbels Propaganda strategy and tell Nigerians what you and your party APC will do better should you win the next election.

    • Idy

And you’re who tell him not to defend the rights of every citizen. Don’t you see what’s happening and how oga jona and his people are doing everything right to destroy this country… Stay there and see your future into the drain! #Changeisinevitable

    • Dan Fulani

APC would not do better but they will at least get rid of the Sailor.

    • Troublesome

Oga Cypo, please is police controlled by the state government or federal government because you are saying when did Jonathan becomes Governor of Edo state?

  • Chris1408

Nigerian politicians have turned the country to a lawless society where thuggery rein supreme.

GEJ, is training another set of Boko haram. Lets wait and see. History would surely judge him..

  • djay

Just as they withdrew soldiers before the chibok girls kidnap the withdrew police guarding the legislative quarters before the attack. Its all have the foot print of presidency.

  • Wähala

Alhj. Lai is right again and he should know… he was a victim of security brutality during Osun Guber elections. Dumbo has turned the infrastructure for security into his party’s tool for harassment with impunity against all established international codes for respect of human rights, protection of life and property… and a healthy & democratic co-existence where free & fair opposition to the Government in power is guaranteed. Where are those who are quick to point to Gitmo or Abu Gharib, to tell Höly Wähala where the US system we copy so abuses her citizens for partisan purposes? Dumbo is a desperate bandito and the international community are better off not coming to monitor any elections in 2015 bcos a desperado who cannot protect the lives of his citizens can darn sure not guarantee the lives of foreigners… and the arms embargo will stay because Dumbo wants to arm PDP thugs for this kind of mayhem, that’s why he sent the terrorist Asari to go shopping for illegal arms from the underworld. That’s why it seems I’m always angry… Animals!

    Words on the marble:

Goodluck is already confused. So many administrative blunders are sorrounding his government. They are becoming too hot for him and his group to handle. Gob bless Nigeria and bring the desired change come 2015.

  • Scalywag

As was in Buni Yadi, where soldiers withdrew shortly before the attack on minors at the Federal Government College by Boko Haram, so was it in Benin City when the police withdrew from the Legislators quarters. The script is the same. It is the season of bandit rule. And the bandits are getting more desperate by the day! Their scamsmen are bandying 12.2 million ‘signatures’? Nigerians must arise and retake our country! We flush out these bandits with our votes in 2015.

  • @Amuwospeaks

This is a threat to democracy.. it tells PDP ‘s desperation..

  • Engr. Anidiobu, V.O

Fr. Ikechukwu Odigbo has said it all here, Nigeria need this anti corruption crusade more than any thing now. I watched in disbelief the senate rejection of ethics and privileges committee report on Chibuike Rotimi Amechi and his eventual confirmation. The interesting thing there was that PDP emerged from the process as “saints” while the APC senators went home with the morale burden of approving some one whose case of embezzling N100b is still pending in court even bend the report that indicted Amechi. Who is changing who now. Even President Buhari that appointed Amechi has destroyed his celebrated “body language”.

The Almighty Creator is against corruption. He had a Pattern before He created mankind. Our leaders in Religion, Church and State, politics, social media and other arms of mass media, education and other sectors of human endeavor must be encouraged to pursue integrity, etc. Nevertheless there is one and only one Pattern that the Almighty Creator is fulfilling.
