Ekiti to honour Africa’s youngest Ph.D holder, as Buhari commissions Parapo Square

Governor Kayode Fayemi

Africa’s youngest Ph.D holder, Hallowed Oluwadara Olaoluwa, is among 29 Ekiti indigenes who would be honoured with the state’s merit award in the 2014 edition of the annual event billed for Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, October 1, 2014.

The Ekiti State-born Dr. Olaoluwa stormed the academic world earlier in the year when he bagged his Ph.D in Mathematics from the University of Lagos at the age of 24.

He is considered the youngest ever in the continent. He will be receiving the award in the academic and research category.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Olayinka Oyebode, this year’s merit award would hold at the Ekiti Parapo Square which will be commissioned same day.

The 12,000-seater square, described as one of the legacy projects of the Fayemi administration, would be commissioned by former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, supported by other eminent Nigerians.

Other distinguished Ekitis to be honoured include the first Nigerian Professor of Mathematics, the late Prof Adegoke Olubunmo and foremost historian, the late Emeritus Professor Jacob Ade-Ajayi, who would be awarded post humously.

Elemure Ogunyemi, a chief, who recently passed on would also receive a post humous award.

Also on the list are Elizabeth Adegbite, a former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN); ace musician, Yinka Ayefele; Emily Olaboye , a respected mat weaver and Jude Michael Osagwu, who won the Best Teacher in Nigeria Award in 2013.

The State Commissioner for Special Duties, Apalara Wole-Adewunmi, who is chairman of the planning committee, said the award is to recognise excellence among citizens and residents of the state who have distinguished themselves in different ways.

Yes, this is the real, authentic merit award. I looked at it and doffed my hat for this kind of recognition. It’s not the kind that recognised thieves, corrupters and destroyers of our collective future. This is what the real Ekiti was known for-excellence in any endeavour.
Unfortunately, the stomach infrastructuralists have taken over. Wish them well in the next four years.

I am still wondering why u guys on this blog choose to play politic with bitterness, u have never find anything good and all u sees are negetivities. Am sorry to say that ppl like u are the problem of this nation, even when u see ur sef as an opposition (which is acceptable) ur criticism must reflect honesty, add values n with sincerity in a way that would be acceptable by the ruling side and who knows if that could makes them have a rethink. This act of calculated and deliberate attack is not what we need to restore our democracy.

      • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

Is the truth written by Concerned9ja that painful to you?

    • Otile

But this happened under the leadership of President Jonathan. So, I duff my hat for Drs Oluwadara Olaoluwa and Jonathan. If GEJ was as bad as people are saying he could have closed schools and converted them into prisons.

      • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

You trying to rub some of the shine off on GEJ?

Did he provide the boy with the kerosine lantern he used to study or did he give him unlimited funds to ride okada to school or did he ensure the boy did not finish earlier by ensuring that the universities stayed open constantly?

Abegi, joor. GEJ hand no dey for this one!

        • Otile

But govt did nothing to deter him from achieving his goals. I am sure GEJ is happy for him too. M Buhari hates education and what it stands for.

          • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

Otile, I agree with you that GEJ is also happy for him, no doubt.

I also believe GEJ also helped him to become resilient in his studies by not removing all those barriers that would have made his studies easier.

Indeed, it was a deliberate plan by GEJ to motivate the young man.

As to GMB hating education, were you not aware that he sometimes disguises himself and addresses the nation, on video as Ibrahim Shekau?

          • Otile

You are being sarcastic now. M Buhari will not debase himself so low as to fake Imam Shekau. M Buhari very badly wants to be President and wants to appear presidential.

Don’t say that President Jonathan helped him to become resilient…by removing those barriers, and all that… Those barriers are part of PhD program, removing them would water down the coveted honor attached to the degree. That’s what separates the sheep from the goat. That’s why not every aspirant get the gets the degree. PhD is not for the masses. Dr Oluwadara Olaoluwa deserves the honor. Thanks to the President to he did not clamp the professors into prison.

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

      Concerned,

Walahi, you beat me to this comment by about 5 hours!

That is what a true merit list should look like; unlike another one that had the names of our tormentors-in-chiefs (I no go call them thieves o) and some sprinkling of humble people.

Kudos to Guv. Fayemi and the team that drew this list up.

      • Naija

Mr Esq where do you always have the time to almost 24/7 comment on political and religious matters? Your office can’t be busy because you are simply a charge and bail. May be when APC comes to power at the centre you will be rewarded with contracts for being a good janjaweed.

        • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

          Naija,

Nothing beats being worked for; as opposed to working for!

There is no money worth my price, and I mean no money worthy of conscience.

Elemure of blessed memory, I love his songs. Thanks to my former neighbour for introducing me.

Elemure of blessed memory, I love his songs. Thanks to my former neighbour for introducing me to his music.

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

      Shame on me!

I never knew nor heard his music!!

      • Okey

Why would you, since Alhaji Liar suffuses your ear and sight with all the lyrics you need

        • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

You seem to know a lot – the price of everything and the value of nothing.

      • Enemona

Not too late, you can go get his albums or check out some of his songs on Youtube but you might not get the old ones which, in my opinion, are better. His songs are full of wisdom, I always love his intro and the smooth flow of bata beat, the background gongs and the chorus, just relaxing. You’d enjoy it more if you can cope with what I thought was the ijesha accent but you should if you understand, at least, some little Yoruba like I do. I always rewind where I feel I have missed something. The folklore in his songs are just purely entertaining. He deserves this award.

        • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

          Many thanks, Enemona.

When I log off tonight, I shall go searching for his music.

  • Maria

I have read paper published by this guy in the Springer journal of Fixed Points Theory and Applications. The paper is titled: Multiplex fixed point theorems in cone metric spaces. I marvelled at the level of his intellect and ingenuity displayed in that journal paper. He deserves more than this award.

  • Otile

Think about it. How can an inept, incompetent man become a science Professor, be chosen as a governor, vice president, elected president in a landslide in a diverse, most populated black country on God’s earth? Are these feats all coincidence, or people trying to put him down for political gains? We are not all blind.

    • Maria

      Obasanjo will answer your question.

      • Otile

Obasanjo may nominate and cast one lone vote for him, how about the other 22million enthusiastic voters? Did Ogagun lead them to the ballot box? Maria, Maria, give credit to the man. Many Nigerians appreciate what he is doing for them.
