Seized $9.3m: Senate to question military chiefs, NSA

Nigeria's Senate Chamber, otherwise known as the Red Chamber

Following the seizure of Nigeria’s $9.3 million cash by the South African authorities on Monday, the Senate has asked military and the security outfits to brief its committees on the matter.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence and Army, George Sekibo disclosed this in a chat with journalists on Thursday.

Those he said expected to brief the lawmakers on Tuesday are the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, Chief of Army Staff, Kenneth Minimah and the National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki.

The Federal Government had admitted on Tuesday that it owned the money, which was meant for arms transaction and conveyed in a private aircraft belonging to the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Ayo Oritsejafor.

Two Nigerians and an Israeli who were in possession of the money, which has since been frozen, were also arrested.

Mr. Sekibo said the military chiefs and the NSA would tell the committee what exactly happened.

“I have just called the Chief of Defence Staff, National Security Adviser and Chief of Army Staff. I don’t want to pre-empt issues because we have not heard details about it, but they will be here on Tuesday next week,” he said.

The senator said he was not shocked at the conviction of 12 soldiers who were court-martialled by the military, saying they (soldiers) were aware of the implication of a mutiny.

Mr. Sekibo said the military conducted its investigation before embarking on the trial.

What are they calling the Service Chiefs for… eh?
They should start impeachment procedures against Dr. Dumbo without any ado.
Fake Oritsejafor nko? has the EFCC or IGP or anybody for that matter invited him for questioning about his role in the money laundering scandal? That money was not meant for any arms purchase, it is part of our missing $20bn that Oritsejafor et al, have been stashing away in bits until yawa gas. With Sekibo of Niger Delta extract heading that Senate committee, nothing will come out of it… but, the real embarrassment and soot will be poured on the Nigerian Senate when the trials for the criminals begin in ernst, Obama is making sure of that, we have lost faith in David Mark’s rubber-stamp gang of thugs. Nonsense!

    • Sword of Damocles

@ Wahala, they did start their own version of “impeachment” against the Clown Prince. Its called uncontested nomination to the Presidency under the PDP banner, ANIMALS!!!!

      • Musty

With due respect to your entitled opinion. Let us stop joking. Nigeria is bigger than all of us. For sure, either we like it or not, PDP will win the elections and nothing will happen in Nigeria. Sorry for Nigeria and Nigerians. Just think of it carefully and emotionless, would these people in PDP allowed themselves to lose that political power? NO!!! No matter what they will retain that power

        • Wähala

          “For sure” ba?
What makes you so sure… are you God?
Pal, 2015 is a new ballgame and there’s no ‘for sure’ until we see the entire line-up.
Elections are a game of numbers and as Jega is making sure every registered voter has proximity to polling boots, there’s no way the PDP can win given the voting density of APC-controlled states. Push comes to shove, we will divide Naija into regions make all man to his tent… O Naija!

        • Sword of Damocles

I read your musings, however I could not understand this part: ” Let us stop joking. Nigeria is bigger than all of us”

so please explain what you are articulating, as I may not be as smart as you.

  • Bade Oluyomi

Nigerians should expect lots of lies at the Senate hearing. Those lies will be under rehearsal by now.
But the good thing is that no lies can prevail over the facts established by the South African government.
Nigerians should stick to the facts and not set store by shallow questions conspiratorial Senators might be asking.
