Senate will create more states in Nigeria – David Mark

The Senate President, David Mark, on Wednesday restated his commitment to ensure that the quest for creation of additional states in the country was brought to a logical conclusion.

This is contained in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja.

The senate president made the remarks while receiving four members of the House of Representatives and nine local government chairmen from Benue.

It stated that the president’s desire for creation of additional states was due to call by some Nigerians to correct some imbalances that existed in state creation, to give Nigerians a sense of belonging.

“Even if it takes my last breadth, I want to pursue the creation of state. I will put in my last breadth to ensure the creation of Apa State for my people,” Mr. Mark was quoted as saying.

Mr. Mark is among the lawmakers that have advocated the creation of more states, while several others have also opposed it saying the existing ones can barely be sustained. The recently concluded National Conference called for the creation of 18 more states to bring the total in Nigeria to 54.

Responding to calls on him to contest the 2015 senatorial seat, Mr. Mark said he would make his intention known as soon as the guidelines for the elections were released.

“I am a loyal, faithful and dedicated party man. I will only make my intention known when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) releases the guidelines and programme for the elections,” the statement noted.

He urged the people to remain steadfast and loyal to the PDP because there were good reasons to remain in the party.

He, however, cautioned aspirants to political offices to base their campaigns on issues that would positively impact on the citizenry, instead of engaging in mudslinging or character assassination.

The leader of the delegation, Sunday Ojo, said the visit was necessitated by pressure from citizens from Benue South Senatorial District to compel Mr. Mark to contest 2015 senatorial seat.

Mr. Ojo, who is the Chairman of Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue, stressed that the Idoma community had no better candidate than Mr. Mark.

He noted the achievements the senate president’s representation had brought to the people of the zone.

Mr. Ojo noted that Mr. Mark’s achievements on roads, healthcare, scholarship and rehabilitation of schools, including National Open University Complex and JAMB Centre were welcome.

Also the Chairman, Ado Local Government Area, Alex Ogaba, commended the senate president for the stability he brought to Nigerian politics.

Mr. Ogaba, who is the Chairman of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Benue South, said all the tiers of government were working harmoniously for the good of the citizenry.

He assured that the people of the zone would do everything possible to re-elect the senate president.

Speaking on behalf of the members from the House of Representatives from Benue South, Hassan Saleh said the Idoma people were ready to return Mr. Mark unopposed in 2015.

How can anyone be swayed by the very stale Abacha tactics being employed by Mark and Jonathan?

The contest for the Benue South Senatorial seat curently unfairly hijacked by David Mark since 1999 will surprise everyone. Even the stooges who went on that visit to tell him what he wants to hear will shock him on election day as none of them will vote for him. The Idomas are completely fed up with David Mark and he knows it. Je only arranged this visit to give him a platform to parrotize the same old, well worn story of Apa State creation, which he has been recycling all these 15 years!

But he will be shocked this time. How can a man who does nothing for the Idoma people, except his favoured relations and inlaws create a State for the people, when in fifteen years, he has not been able to provide water for the people to drink, not to talk of hospitals, roads or schools? Even the road passon tjrouth his village of Akpegede, Otukpo is a mess!

Let our Tiv brothers not imagine that Mark does anything for Idoma people. Come to Benue Zone C and see how people are dying from Cholera and River Blindness in the 21st Century, when Mark, supposedly an Idoma man, has been presiding over the Federal appropriation process for the past 8 years?

Anyway, his end is here, and if he gets up to 200 Idoma votes in the 2015 elections, he should go for a Thanksgiving service. The Idomas hate him as much as he despises them, and their time is comimg in 2015 when a young, relatively unknown contender for that position will disgrace him and bring his inglorious political career to a shameful end!

Mark my prophetic words! The long suffering people of Benue South have spoken!

        • Ehoche Ekedegba

True talk my brother! Let the whole world hear it, that Mark means nothing to Idoma people. He may have national aura because of the position he occupies because Nigerians dont know him well enough, but back home, he is lower than the lowliest dog in the estimation of our people. Let him deceive himself and be led by his legendary greed and come again this time and let him see what will happen to him.

what of ur Oturkpo Okpokolo Road ?

Exactly his wife pocketed the contract money only to rush to site after Labaran Maku took NTA there. They worked briefly and disappeared. I pity these Idomas for being dummies.

Buying up all the media houses by APC and waving millions under the nostrils of under-paid journalists cannot hide the fact that Baba-Tinubu- would have been ashamed of his readiness to compromise every decency to ascend the throne in Aso Rock. Where Awolowo maintained a consistent commitment to the farmers and other workers by providing an escape route for their children through education, the owl is obviously only interested in making more and more money from any state that falls prey to his party APC through excruciating taxes and levies. When he came for votes as a senator in those days, he could not be described as a millionaire. Now he is richer than Osun state but would not spare that state his merciless taxation machinery.
Can anyone who has read the history books imagine Awolowo being amenable to desperado manoeuvres like attempting to worm his way to the office of Vice President by negotiating a deal that requires the wannabe Vice President signing a resignation letter before the election?
Can any of the people who enjoyed Action Group’s free education imagine a committed man like Awo dropping a programme dear to him because he is desperate to merge with strange bed fellows? The swallowed up ACN used to make a lot of noise about true federalism as one of their sacrosanct programmes. That has been compromised by a contraption in the name of a mega party of ambitious paper cats.
Nigerians deserve something better than fluffy bandits who keep flying to and fro supposedly ideologically opposed parties like witches serially hopping from coven to coven. Who do these guys imagine that they are fooling?
Obviously, no one has mentioned any name here but you know what Achebe said about how an old woman without teeth feels when her neighbour talk about a corn cob with scanty grains on it.

  • gboromiro

Why even declare it before acting? And why wait for the conference to propose in the first place?
No one is fooled by this declared intent.
You were never a sincere democrat! It is not today you will change your colour for the discerning.

  • D-ONE

MARK!!!! hmmm its well!!! so much story of state creation when we know the truth that it is political!!!! lets wait and see!!

  • Isuugh

The same story every year. David Mark had used this story line of imaginary state creation to keep idomas in bondage to do his biddings. While the same man has spent 12 twelve bragging as if it could be done single handedly the people seems completely ignorant unable to think. They carry on with strategic minority thing. David divides every federal benefits 80/20 with idomas getting every federal appointments. A very tribalistic and wicked man who does not see anything good in Tivs with 80 percent population of the state. Just because Makurdi is the capital he did not see anything wrong in his state not having a functioning airport. He and Suswam come and go in chattered air crafts while the people die daily on very bad roads leading to the state. David Mark has been senate president for at least 8 years without any benefits to the general state except the idomas. APC is getting ready with the appointment of Akume as member of board of trustee. PDP has over 30 candidates for one position. Many of PDP govership candidates are political lightweight without any form of national appeal. Candidates are being sponsored by the governor and his brother including many unknown elements parading themselves hope to defeat APC. While Ugba defeated Suswam hands down before the abracadabra PDP plan to field novice and that may lead to demise of PDP in Benue. PDP needs a formidable candidate with clout to checkmate APC. Benue will be better with strong opposition. Suswam is too comfortable and overconfident but surprises await him and his stooges. APC is underrated but PDP is in for a rude shock if they fail to get it right with the right and formidable candidate.

Pure Stupidity. Nigeria used about 95% of its resources to run the government. So much that capital projects are financed with debt in almost all the states. Where does the 95% go? Salary and benefits to politicians and civil servants in multi duplication of administrative positions, ghost workers and redundant workers. This is not serving the people but politicians. Look at the figures, don’t be sentimental. How much goes to legislatures at federal and states and local government combined as salaries and benefits, add that of the governors and commissioners plus ministers at federal level and chairmen at local government. Minister of finance, budget office, office of statistics should published the figures . Don’t forget amount that is stolen and wasted by the above. THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVELY RUN GOVERNMENT IN THE WORLD . THEY TOOK EVERYTHING AND STILL WANT MORE BY WAY OF STATE CREATIONS. THE PEOPLE WILL THINK THIS IS FOR THEM BUT IT IS NOT.

It is unethical or fraudulent of both Premium Times and the author of this article to publish it as Saraki’s response to Professor Osundare’s poem. I feel sorry for our children and young people in this country how we wrongly socialize them into the world – compared to their European and American peers.

Akeem Lasisi must be mad to have penned these lines as a response to his superiors who are well fit to be his “father.” Akeem, are you looking for a job or what, say so, then we well know how to go about your case. I do not think you should sell your literary prowess to somebody like Saraki who acted without honour on this matter. Put yourself in the 51 members of your party who were disenfranchised, would you be happy? Take your time lo, so ‘o ra re gidi gidi
