I’ll join PDP where I have friends – Ikimi

Tom Ikimi

A few weeks after he left Nigeria’s main opposition party, APC, Tom Ikimi has stated that he would join the mainstream ruling party where he has ‘friends’.

Mr. Ikimi dumped the APC after being denied the national chairmanship of the party and after bitter squabbles with some leaders of the party, including Bola Tinubu. The Edo politician then accused Mr. Tinubu of hijacking the APC.

On Monday in Benin, Mr. Ikimi said that he is ready to ensure that Edo is included in the mainstream states in the South-South region in future.

He addressed journalists shortly after arriving Benin Airport from Abuja.

He said that what was in the future for the state was greater than what had been seen so far, adding that he was back with the Federal Government.

He also said that there was no reason to be at logger head with the Federal Government as development in his native land of Igueben, Edo State, was done by the Federal Government and not the state government.

He further said that he had had talks and discussions with the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Tony Anenih.

According to him, it is time to make peace with his kinsmen as well as time for him to gravitate to a party where he has friends.

Ikimi said it was a good thing that the nation had two dominant political parties, the APC and the PDP, stressing that it was time for people to decide where they belong.

He said that the decision to leave the APC was not for witch hunting or for vendetta, but was quick to add that the APC was a party where leaders witch hunt one another.

The former APC leader said he was back home for final consultation with his people, and that the wait won’t be long before bringing to the awareness of the people the party he was pitching tent with.

Earlier, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who led some other PDP chieftains to the airport to receive and welcome Mr. Ikimi, said that they had come to identify with him and to tell him that they would not allow him to be disgraced.

Mr. Ize-Iyamu said the reception was in solidarity with one of their own and to let him know that the people of the state still believed in him and trust him.

He expressed the hope that the PDP would win future elections in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that those who welcomed Mr. Ikimi were Lucky Igbinedion, former governor of Edo; Lucky Imasuen; Tony Omoaghe; and Evelyn Igbafen.

      • the truth

he is part of the ruling party, when apc starts ruling open your mouth to talk

    • Amaka

You are a typical Anumanu Kay.

  • Amaka

Ikimi is a natural betrayer. He would have sold APC. PDP planted Ikimi and Modu Sheriff to destroy APC and they failed. I’d rather support the military than be in the same party with undemocratic selfish anti-democratic masquaredes like Ikimi whose history with lack of principle is as old as he is.

  • Ogunbor Osarahme

If APC have made you the party’s National Chairman would you have decamped? Shameless old man you have no respect anywhere.

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

“…those who welcomed Mr. Ikimi were Lucky Igbinedion, former governor of Edo; Lucky Imasuen; Tony Omoaghe; and Evelyn Igbafen – Premium Times

He is in good company indeed!

Who needs enemies with friends like that?

  • dudu

Welcomed by those who ran the resources of edo state aground for more than 8 years before Oshiomole started repairing the ruins. They will be put to shame ultimately because we know their antecedents.

  • dudu

Ikimi should be ashamed, I had thought he would strive to defend himself against the allegations made by Tinubu, obviously, he couldn’t because his history haunts him and the allegations he made against Tiniubu shows that he is a liar. period.

    • the truth

so all these while tinubu knew of his past but kept quiet, but the moment he decamped tinubu let nigerians know who the real ikimi is, so how many of those people still exist in apc. food for thought, or we have to wait until they decamp to know the truth about them

  • Scalywag

How can an ‘elder’ continue oscillating like a pendulum? Is it now he realised he had friends in PDP? The accusations against him by the APC have been justified. Some of these characters are the ones who have stymied the development of Nigeria. During the June 12 imbroglio, having lost that election, Ikimi and the then NRC he led had the patriotic duty of conceding defeat to Abiola and SDP. If he had gone ahead to congratulate Abiola, he would have taken the wind out of the sails of the military government of IBB and would have pre-empted the anullment of that election. He along with Abiola’s running mate Kingibe would then go ahead and take up appointments in Abacha’s government without remorse. It is now clear that he was positioning APC for sale. Nigerians are wiser now and can see through the antics of these people. Has he been able to bring potable water to Igueben? Have the streets of the place been paved? Are the villagers able to pay their children’s school fees with ease? Has the quality of their lives improved or will it improve because Ikimi is now in PDP? Nigerians should be wiser now, especially those these characters believe are eating from their dustbins

  • John green

When I see an old man giving silly excuses for his failure, I laughed that could this man have a children at home or ever lived for a village or head of state??? I wonder the lies they must have told their children and family. It’s a pity when it’s all about survival and living. It’s all about who you wants to be, it’s shame that we have no future in the calibre of people like him. A failed party with a failed old man, what a pity, we need change and that’s all….

  • wode

    Your move was easily predictable.

  • Truthometer

Birds of the same feather. Welcome back home to looting and plundering of Nigerian’s commonwealth. PDP! Share the moneyyyy!!!

  • TRUTH MASTER

All Ikimi’s kinsmen at Igueben said they won’t follow him out of the APC because he never consulted them before leaving. So who is he taking into the ‘mainstream’ of Nigerian politics? This chief has an exaggerated sense of self! In real sense, he is a political liability!

  • Dawood

Why are you not in governance? Please, somebody, hire this man. I thought I was the only one that notices these shameful acts by Africans. The poignant and most shameful of all is the one where our politicians run to London hospitals every time their corrupt yarsh itches. SHAMEFUL. Show me a time any Western leader came to Nigeria for anything except to plunder. SLAVISH MENTALITY, I call it. We don’t value or care for ourselves or what we have, and so we quote foreign icons (Shakespear) all the time. It’s a HUGE problem, and I’m glad ONE person in Nigeria sees it. Why do our women bleach, why are all our politicians hopeless kleptocrats (thieves), why do we not patronize our own? The cause is what this writer has hinted at in this article: SELF-HATRED. The day we recognize that is the day we begin to influence the pendulum to swing the other way.
