The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Sunday declared Shem Zagbai of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the Niger East Senatorial by-election after a re-run.

The August 30 by-election was declared inconclusive due to electoral malpractice in some polling units.

The re-run was held in polling units in Bosso, Chanchaga, Munya, Paikoro, Rafi and Shiroro local government areas on Saturday.

The returning Officer for the election, Morenikeji Olakonmi, who announced the results in Minna, said that Mr. Zagbai scored 92, 056 votes against David Umaru of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who polled 87, 405 votes.

He said Isa Bello of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and Abdulahi Diko of Social Democratic Party scored 2,185 and 419 votes respectively.

“We have come to the conclusion of the collation. I, Prof. Morenike Olakonmi, hereby certify that I was the Returning Officer for Niger East Senatorial District by-election held on the 6th day of September 2014.

“That Dr Shem Zagbai of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner,’’ he said.

If it is free and fair, we welcome it. Even if the people elect a devil, it is a success for democracy, even if it means a failure for their aspirations, peace and welfare.

Based on popular votes (and some rigging), Jonathan won in 2011. Nigerians are paying a heavy price for their judgement. Yet, while they may call his failure all manner of names, they cannot say that his failure misrepresents the squalor of their judgement. That is the beauty of democracy when it is working properly. You make your choice, you live with it and pay for it.

No face for APC. The face of defeat in 2015 is fastly playing out

Chai Nigerians and indolence! You mean despite this monster called PDP ravaging the country in the past 15 years some people still cannot read the writing on the wall and are voting these agents of destruction and poverty into positions of authority?

    • macgeorge

My brother the only uniting party in nigeria is PDP so do forget ur personal intrest and your tribalistic party intrest. Iam advising u to come to the uniting party unless you want nigeria to disintergate

      • Tonnero

What are they uniting? If they are uniting, why has BH been growing in strength from day to day and capturing territories? If they are uniting, why is there so much ethnic and religious division? You Nigerians are not ready for change. Tribalism, religious bigotry and corruption which are PDPs tools have blinded most people that they prefer to continue to support a massively corrupt and incompetent regime because they belong to one’s tribe or party. No hurry. By the time the destruction being caused by PDP gets to your doorsteps, then you might sing a different tune.

Senate president bukola saraki and speaker yakubu dogara will both last for 4yrs on their respective positions. I don’t understand why pple keep saying they won’t last cos the constitution was not breached. Or is it cos they are not the choice of tinubu? I fink pple should wake up and realise that nigeria is not and cannot b the property of one man, you can’t keep dictating to everybody tha apc is a union of different pple, with diff ideas and some of them are also godfathers and kingmakers in their various states.

If Lawan is Tinubu’s candidate and he is the choice of the majority in the APC, it only goes to show that he is the true leader of the party. If Bukola Saraki is popular in APC, he would not have allied with the PDP. In any case, remove the SW from APC today and APC becomes a northern party. The joy is that the Bukola-Lawan feud is not only ethnic and religious lined. But the President cannot afford to be an onlooker in this feud without bringing the two parties together urgently or else it will be difficult for him to govern effectively.

      • ozzy

Lawan was not the choice of the majority rather he was forced down their throat by tinubu thru blackmail of party sanctions. This blackmail is true cos saraki was john oyegun preffered candidate for the seat and also with the open ballot mock election for the senators elect intead of the secret ballot system conducted for the reps. And if he’s truly the leader of the party its time he starts acting like one.

        • Victor Odutola Mayomi

You are wrong. Lawsn was not Tinubu’s candidate. The NE said the position should be given to them because the zone contributed the second highest votes to Buhari’s presidency. Atiku, Ndume were very loud about it. It is suprising that the same Atiku later came back to support Saraki. But if you are objective, you will know that Lawan has more senators of APC in his camp compared with Saraki and it explains why Bukola went to ally with the PDP.

          • ozzy

The ne call for zoningthe senate president to them cos of their votes was just a a ploy to scheme out other candidates and which u know if u will say the truth was a criteria brought by tinubu. And if truly atiku left lawan to pitch his tent with saraki then u know there’s more to the candidacy of lawan than meets the eyes. And come to think of it who is lawan in nigerias politics compared to saraki, what was his personal c9ntribution to the success of apc in the last polls compared to lawan. All what pple have against saraki is his casebwith efcc and pple keep forgetting that u are assumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, so lets wait and c if he is actually guilty of the allegation which we all know was levelled against him for making public the subsidy scam in the fg the nobody knew was going on. Can u name one politician in nigeria today that is saint? Pple kip saying that lawan is clean can he swear under an oath that the constituency money given to him was utilised to the last kobo? And talking abt saraki’s alliance with the pdp are the pdp not elected senators too? Cos they are minority in the house, does it mean they can’t vote? Bukola saw what tinubu and co were trying to do to him and hte allied with pdp and won the seat and remember he had 57 senators with him and if u take 57 out of 108 u have 51 and the last time I checked 57 is more than 51 that is to say if they were all in the house instead of going for a meeting that was not called thwy would have lost still.

            And he won.No controversy!!!!

          • Victor Odutola Mayomi

Yes he won. There is no controversy about that and that should not worry anybody. His victory is not a gain to PDP. Later, PDP will realize that they made a mistake because APC will come together to resolve their differences.
