Nigeria records another Ebola case in Rivers

Governor Rotimi Amaechi

Nigeria has confirmed its eight Ebola case in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said Wednesday.

The new case, which brings the total number of confirmed Ebola cases in Nigeria to 18, is a sister of the late Port Harcourt doctor, Ikechukwu Enemuo, who secretly treated a diplomat, one of the primary contacts of the index case in a hotel.

Mr. Chukwu said eight people who had tested positive to the deadly virus disease have been successfully managed and discharged.

He also said the last case to be discharged is the first secondary contact to be diagnosed and a spouse of one of the primary contacts of the index case.

He said the patient was discharged from the isolation ward on Tuesday.

He said a ninth survivor is the ECOWAS diplomat who escaped surveillance in Lagos and travelled to Port Harcourt where he infected Mr. Enemuo.

Since the importation of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in Nigeria by Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian- American, seven people have died from the disease including the index case.

Mr. Chukwu said that a total number of two EVD patients are currently under treatment; one in the Lagos and the other in Port Harcourt isolation wards.

He also noted that 296 people are under surveillance in Nigeria; 255 in Port Harcourt and the remaining 41 in Lagos; while 320 people have been discharged following a completion of the 21 days of observation.

Mr. Chukwu also debunked rumours of EVD cases in any other states outside Port Harcourt and Lagos, stating that the blood sample of a suspected case of the disease in Zaria, Kaduna State have also been sent for testing.

Furthermore, the minister said the body of Mr. Enemuo has been decontaminated and will be buried in Port Harcourt against rumours that his corpse was transported to Edo or Delta States.
