“We will ensure that those, who have suffered unjustly in the hands of terrorists can, in our little way, be consoled”, he said.

President Goodluck Jonathan will on Thursday launch the Victim Support Fund to raise funds for victims of terror attacks across the country.

Briefing journalists after the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, on Wednesday, the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, said the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, briefed the Council on preparation for the fund raising program.

The fund will be launched at a presidential fund raising dinner which will be held at the banquet hall of the State House, Abuja.

President Goodluck Jonathan had earlier inaugurated a committee headed by Theophilus Danjuma, a retired army general, to oversee the fund.

Inaugurating the committee a fortnight ago, the President noted that the decision to set up the Victims Support Fund was borne out of a need to provide a framework for all persons and institutions to help mitigate the sufferings of the victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.

“We will ensure that those, who have suffered unjustly in the hands of terrorists can, in our little way, be consoled”, he said.

Urging Nigerians to contribute to the fund, Mr. Maku noted that “From what is realised government will also provide some money to support the Safe School Initiative”.

  • Funso Famuyiwa

Way to go Mr. Sani. But, are they ( the Rulers) ready to listen ?

  • Ifeanyianadu

Ninety five percent of all the itemized have always been on the table but the visionless chief/thief executives have been busy lining their pockets and fanning the ember of hate. When they all see the federal allocation as their only source of revenue. Shehu Sani unfortunately still sees it as ONE NORTH. The unfortunate concept of ONE NORTH runs counter to state creation. Three or four states with near common affinity can collaborate. The monster that MUST be crushed is the islamist terror group boko haram that has sponsorship in the north.

  • Peter Perceival

Well put, Shehu, except that recreating the old “One North” is a mirage. That concept has been irreparably destroyed by overt and cover fraudulent and violent schemes to turn the region into a mono-religious society. Trust between the components has been eroded, and you would have a hard time getting everyone to come on board, due to mutual suspicion.

I love the recommendation to scrap most courses in state universities except medicine, engineering and agriculture. In this regard, one of the things that should change is that Quranic schools where the only objective is for little children to memorise the Qu’ran, and which hold session at the same hours as conventional schools, should be abolished and outlawed. When your children grow up with only the knowledge of the Qu’ran and nothing else, you will never build the manpower you need to move the states or region forward. The North has confused Arabic with Islamic knowledge. If you read the history of mathematics, it actually all started in the Arab world – in Egypt. Thales and Pythagoras lived in Egypt. Their language was primarily Arabic. But they did not bury themselves studying the Qu’ran all day – they studied science.

It is the products of these Qu’ranic schools that become the “Maitasines” and “Boko Harams” because they are adults with no useful skills!

    • Sani Umar

No Peter the last time I checked the products of the Qur’anic schools in places like UAE, Singapore, India, SA, etc are making progress all over the world except in Nigeria where your own Mumu is at the top..Lol. As for the Maitatsine and Boko Haram, we now know that CAN and your brethren are their major sponsors so as to give Islam a bad name. But sorry o, God’s own religion is in-extinguishable. Even the mighty warriors of the christian crusade tried but yet under their watchful eyes Islam grew and it will so continue to grow till the end of time while you christian zealots continue to bask in hatred and shame at your own peril.

      • Peter Perceival

What an amazing reasoning! So you think the backwardness of the north today is the handiwork of the present government? I see you cannot see beyond religious bigotry. I have no interest in a religious debate. You can castigate Christianity if you like. But the decades have shown that northern leaders have failed to equip their people with skills that can earn them a living. There was a time when merely being a northerner assured you of wealth. Not any more. You need relevant skills. And that is where the problem lies. Shehu Sanni has rightly called for a re-orientation – that northerners should stop blaming the rest of the country for its woes and take responsibility for moving itself forward. Unfortunately, people like you just don’t get it!

    Utopia. Wishful hallucination.

  • Lanre Obafemi

No 1 step according to Shehu Sani is to “end insurgency and restore peace”. Here Shehu Sani is saying that the North is capable of ending the insurgency anytime it makes up its mind to end it. Not a few people argued on the side of Murtala Nyako when he alleged that Boko Haram was a creation of President Jonathan to hurt the North. At last, we are hearing that the insurgency is the North’s to end. Revealing! Interesting!!
