Okagbare, Metu top athletes' list for Africa Championships

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled a list of 43 athletes to compete at the 18th African Athletics Championships scheduled to start this week (June 27-July 1) in Porto Novo, Benin

Top on the list is the duo of Blessing Okagbare, who was adjudged the best performer at the Calabar national trials as well as Obinna Metu, the country’s current fastest man in 2012.

According to organisers, as much as 50 countries, including Nigeria, have confirmed participation in the Athletics Championships which is arguably the biggest after the All African Games.

The officials revealed they had already received the final entries of 50 countries. 816 athletes  (Men: 466, Women: 350) and 201 officials  that will be part of this continental event. The figure represents a record entry for the biennial championships.

Meanwhile, the president of the AFN, Solomon Ogba, has charged the selected athletes to go all out to make the country proud while adding that he would want to see Nigeria unseat South Africa at this year’s event.

The country has continually finished second best in recent editions of the continental athletics event.
