The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it has registered no fewer than 21.4 million Nigerians into the National Identity Database and issued them the National Identification Number (NIN).

The Managing Director of the commission, Aliyu Aziz, gave the figure on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Mr. Aziz said that the new enrolment figure was reached at the close of work on Sept. 6.

According to him, the commission has also set up more enrolment centres across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, bringing the number of such centres to about 805.

He said that with the deployment of additional enrolment centres, NIMC was currently active in 556 local government areas.

Mr. Aziz said that the commission was also working to activate the dormant centres in the remaining 218 councils to expand the enrolment coverage.

He said that this was in line with his goal to register 28 million Nigerians into the database by the end of December, 2017.

The managing director of NIMC said that the commission has continued to record exponential growth in the population of the database, in spite of the challenges facing the commission.

He recalled that the commission had little above seven million NINs in the database when he took over the mantle of leadership in November, 2015.

Aziz said that in spite of the challenges and constraints, he remained undaunted.

The NIMC chief said that he had continued to manage the scarce resources to ensure that the database was populated before the enforcement of the mandatory use of the NIN for all identity-based transactions.

He said that the commission had issued a token for the citizens and legal residents to assert their identities.

Yes id card indeed, I register since 10/4/2014 in Bayelsa the only id I got was the one big like envelope size called temporary card, up till last year December when I was transferred out of Bayelsa I’ve been to their office more than thirty times all what I got is don’t worry we will send sms when your card is available, last month August I sent someone there to check yet it’s the same answer, wait for sms from nimc. Where are the original card if I cannot get mine for over three years now and I cannot re-register. Nonsense.

My gee, it is really a pity that thia government can lie with straight face. How can this administration claimed to have registered over 21m Nigeria since 2015 when last administration could only manage about 5M. Does it mean that strict registration rules have been relaxed to ensure that duplicate or substandard biometric data is saved in the database.

Believe me these guys may not have distributed more than 100,000 ID cards, the money for over hundred million cards may have been pocketed. Bloody corrupt people. Is that the way to identify your citizens and create records for them in this 21st century?? You guys are bloody jokers.
