The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, on Sunday advocated the promotion of social justice for ethnic minorities for peace, unity and development to reign in the country.

The bishops also described as “shameful” calls for Nigeria’s break up.

Its president, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama made the call while declaring open the second plenary meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria for 2017 holding at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cathedral in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

Mr. Kaigama, who is also the Archbishop of Jos, said that lack of social justice for all in the country was responsible for all the agitations for break-up from its different regions.

He, however, described the calls and hate speeches as shameful, saying there were better options on how to address the nation’s challenges.

“There are shameful calls for break-up of the country and so much hate speeches going on.

“This is not the way out, the way out is to correct the level of injustice that has been done to minority ethnic nationalities in the country,” he said.

Mr. Kaigama commended Charles Hamawa, a bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo for the transformation that had taken place in the diocese within a very short time.

He called on the Taraba State Government to include the church in the conceptualisation and implementation of its policies and programmes for them to be effectively felt by the citizens of the state.

Earlier, the host Bishop, Mr. Hamawa, had expressed his appreciation to the lay faithful if the diocese and others in the state for ensuring the success of the conference.

Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba noted that the meeting of the religious leaders in the state at this point was a sign of blessing to the state.

Ishaku called on the bishops to pray for peace and development of the state during their one-week conference in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that about 55 Catholic bishops from across the country, the APC national chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, former governor of Taraba, Jolly Nyame, as well as several church and state dignitaries attended the Mass and the opening ceremonies.

The conference will end on September15 when the conference is expected to issue a communiqué on matters affecting the church and the country.

There is nothing that makes more happy than the size and diversity of our country. We should even be larger. Zaire is more than twice the size of Nigeria and countries like Russia, the US, Brazil and China are more than 10 times the size of Nigeria. Yet these countries don’t think of breaking up. I have a nagging feeling that some foreign countries are egging some citizens to break up the country to dilute our potential future power. In spite of the fact that our minorities have been trampled upon by the majority tribes — Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa/Fulani — it’s instructive that our minorities remain the champions of Nigeria’s unity, including the economically viable minorities. Let’s keep Nigeria one and continue to improve in governance from the Buhari Administration to eternity.

Actually, there are agitations in Russia, China, and the United States. The U.S. is going through something similar to what Nigeria is going through. Nonetheless, I do agree with you that there are elements in foreign countries that are supporting the neo-Biafran agitation for the reasons you have put out. It is not only desirable but imperative that Nigeria remains one but on a foundation of justice and equity.

GusO, please, let us understand certain things before using a sweeping brush to compare Nigeria to these countries. What is the ethnic composition of Zaire, Russia, China and Brazil? I will not mention USA. Those who know understands America has racial issues and not ethnic yet it is uncountable times the best. Nigerians of course rush there to better their lives. Many also commit fraudulent acts and escape or caught and jailed. Nigerian government also beg for aid and loans alongside military training from USA. And Nigeria’s image in USA is despicable. In addition, Native Indians are the only recorded and recognized native or ethnic people who prior to the creation of the country occupied aspects of the land and may not have occupied the sum total of current space that is USA. Also, how does the four examples above treat their people; are they operating a federal system, and does three ethnic groups such as the Hausa-Fulanis, Yorubas and Igbo in Nigeria, use force to steal the oil and land, other wealth of others then kill them when they complain and demand simple equality and equity, justice? What is the language composition of these countries? For America, we know English is the official language even though Spanish is used relatively well. The racial tension in USA gazillion times better than the ethnocentric attitude and criminality, institutionalized theft in Nigeria.

If not that people who insist on one nigeria are benefiting by stealing South-south oil wealth though know one nigeria is not possible except threats of force and fear, why will disintegration to solving decades’ puzzle of unlawful creation and injustice worry anyone? Of course, if these bishops do not have diabolical agenda of their own they should have understood that calling for the breakup of an imposed country that is not working rather criminal and deadly is not a shameful thing. And that is if they understand what shameful means.

It is the politically hostile and intolerable, kidnapping and deadly, crimes infested and rotten country and the manner it is forced on unwilling precolonial ethnic nations that should be shameful not the calls for its disintegration that should cause peace and stability, even development and growth.

Those worried disintegration might cause pains are those with lazy mind and brain who currently steal from others and kill them to survive. In addition, calls for nigeria’s break up are not “hate speech” contrary to the claim in this report or story. They are rather free speech and the best option for nigeria. Of course, the bishops and priests, evangelists, pastors and imams are part of the problem. They mostly ignored these so-called injustices for decades in pursuit of their cuts of the oil money they lie and calls free money.

In many cases they supported these acts of injustice where committed by rulers and politicians from their respective tribes or ethnic groups. When people such as Ken Saro-Wiwa talked about these injustices and cheating, outright institutionalized theft of Ogoni, Ijaw and others’ oil wealth alongside pollution and zero development, and he was hanged alongside others these bishops and their likes did not speak because many believed and still believe it is in their best interest. When Abiola’s mandate was annulled and denied they largely kept mute.

Like politicians and the cabal, the interest of their church and tribes trump or overrides every other interest whether unjust and causing untold hardship and pains, death or not. They are beneficiaries of the crimes of injustice. I therefore truly wish the disintegration calls were serious and reached a no turning back point. I strongly believe and trust that a no nigeria is best than a nigeria where no group agrees; the ethnic groups speak different languages and have different cultures and traditions; a nigeria created on fraud and criminality; where precolonial nations were forced to foster british greedy and criminal interest, yet three groups have continued to cheat and oppress, pollute kill majority of the people.

Since those forced into nigeria unlawfully and illegally, criminally created by rogue britain did not discuss forming any new country from the precolonial nations they had and successive greedy and incompetent, corrupt and deadly governments of post imperial nigeria have further proven that the forced union was wrong and not meant to be giving their amoral treatments of the population, peaceful disintegration remains the best option. Disintegration hence a no nigeria or nigeria inhabited only by current wazobian oppressors while the rest freely form new countries will conduce to peace and stability, security and development—growth in africa!

If those nigeria is imposed on are are fed up therefore serious and willing, determine to be free by braving all odds including noise about war against unwilling peoples who have right to be free and live as pleased and alone, happy without undue interference (see international law on self-determination), then when the right time comes those who want to go to war because others who have right to live their peaceful life alone choose not to be with them, to be cheated and killed, they will fight their war alone. Sharpeville will be like child’s play or there will be no need for it when the people are committed and ready!
