The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, a foremost Islamic body in Nigeria, has “condemned in strongest terms”, the decision of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to continue running its orientation camps for fresh graduates across the country, despite the Ramadan fast.

The body, led by Abubakar Sa’ad, the Sultan of Sokoto, also called on the Nigerian Army to immediately postpone its planned recruitment exercise until Muslims have concluded their fasting period for 2017.

The decision was part of many resolutions, which included fervent prayers for ailing President Muhammadu Buhari, reached by JNI at its recently-concluded annual central council meeting in Kaduna.

The two-day event was held between May 21 and 22.

The organisation said NYSC admitting new entrants into orientation camps and the Nigerian Army conducting recruitment exercise during Ramadan would put Muslim faithful, especially those observing fasting and prayers, at a disadvantage.

“This is because the prospective corps members would be at disadvantage to their faith and other camp activities.

“In the same vein, the council calls on the authority of the Nigerian Army to postpone the intended recruitment exercise until after Ramadan to avoid putting prospective candidates at disadvantage,” it said.

The JNI called on the NYSC to honour a previous agreement entered by the two parties for camp activities to be placed on hold during Ramadan.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Army and NYSC did not immediately return calls and text messages to their respective lines for comments Wednesday afternoon.

The Nigerian Army had earlier this month announced plans to recruit new personnel in an exercise slated to take place between May and June, 2017.

The NYSC opened camps for the latest stream of graduates last week.

What? I can believe this. Are we in saudi arabia? What makes this bigot think that Nigeria is his private estate dedicated to the moon god? This is one of the reasons we are having rise of discontent in Nigeria. What has NYSC got to do with ramadan? After all many christians fast silently while going about their normal activities without asking govt to respect their fasting. Mr Sultan, I think your lack of tolerance, irresponsible and provocative utterances has reached a crescendo that is unheard of. If you feel strongly about fasting you and your gang can do it unnoticed and not the pharisaic way of letting the world know that you are fasting; ramadan is between you and your idol. Nonsense!

Can the military send soldiers to battle fields during ramadan fast? If yes, I think soldiers can be recruited during Ramadan ,to prepare them for the future.

The Sultan has a point especially pertaining to the NYSC issue, lets keep sentiments aside. My appeal to the Sultan is to use his influence to press for the scrapping of NYSC. It has long outlived its usefulness and is a source of hardship, torture and loss of lives to promising youths. No wonder it now popularly referred to as – Now Your Suffering Continues.

Imagine if CAN had issued this kind or order/warning under a Christian president what the Muslims would say. Sultan telling Nigerian Army how to run their affairs.

He (his group) did not diplomatically suggest a way forward but ordered the Nigerian Army on how to do their job when we have not elected him as Commander in Chief of the armed forces. This is the reason why Nigeria would never be like advanced country.

A situation where traditional or Religious leaders will be ordering government agencies to carry out their duties is so appalling. Nigeria we hail thee

It is not a bad advice after all, where are we rushing to since we are already late

Sultan, you are out of order in this matter, Nigeria is a secular state, not a Muslim state, let your follower choose between their fasting and NYSC/Army job, after your is supposed to provide them alternatives if they can’t get this one

  • Excisionist

Insensitive as ever this Muslim leader is confirming that peace and tranquility can only be achieved by excising them from Nigeria. This way, they can have their own Islamic republic and open NYSC orientation when they want.
