Benue govt. cedes land in Agatu for cattle grazing

Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue has provided land in Agatu Local Government Area of the state for use as cattle routes.

This is contained in a communique issued at the end of a two-day meeting between Mr. Ortom, the Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, Chief of Agatu, Godwin Onah, and Fulani Agatu, Ardo Boderi Tuja in Makurdi on Thursday.

The communiqué, which was signed by the community representatives, said that both parties had agreed to give peace a chance and forgive one another.

Reading the communiqué, Mr. Ortom said both parties agreed to designate Oguto Adanyi-Ogumagbo-Bagana as cattle routes in Agatu local government.

“The dedicated routes agreed by both parties for movement of cattle are Oguto -Adanyi- Ogumagbo-Bagana.

“The above privilege is only granted to indigenous Fulani herdsmen, who were known to the Agatu people before the crisis.

“This is to forestall the destruction of farms and exhaustion of available green pasture,’’ he said.

Mr. Ortom said that grazing would begin in Agatu land after the harvest season in February.

The communique disclosed that the two governors would present the case before the Federal Government and push for the rebuilding of the affected communities in their various states.

It also expressed dismay at the proliferation of sophisticated weapons and ammunition in the two communities.

The communiqué, therefore, called on security operatives to take necessary steps to check the trend in order to foster law and order in the area.

It also advised persons with illegal weapons to surrender them immediately or face prosecution.

Mr. Ortom urged the Federal Government to stop migrant herdsmen from entering the country through the country’s borders to prevent population build-up on the Nasarawa bank of River Benue.

In his comment, Mr. Al-Makura said that both parties were satisfied with the peace agreement.

He assured the communities of the state governments’ continued support in the interest of peace.

NAN reports that Mr. Ortom announced a donation of N20 million while Mr. Al-Makura donated N10 million to support the rebuilding of Agatu communities affected by the clashes in the areas. (NAN)

Just expect what happened to Afonja and Alimi in 1804 to happen to traditional rulers in Agatu and its environs. Once you give legal residency to migrant Fulanis anywhere any time, expect the trouble you’ve planted to develop tap roots and branches. Sorry oh..!

Benue State Governor had legalized the killing and rape of innocent children women and old men in Agagu. The Fulani’s terrorist herdsmen killed hundreds of the natives and continue to occupy the farmland and villages. The governor hasn’t been incapable of fighting for the arrest and prosecution of the Fulani’s terrorist herdsmen killers now surrender totally and completely.

Let agree the governor is a bastard. Let see how agatu people ll take this? Except if all if them there are all bastards,ll they give rewards to those that kill their people in cold blood. May curse, generational curse stick n stay with ortom forever for this bastadize act. Oloriburuku

  • This is rewarding the herdsmen for the killing of innocent people. Next time, other groups will spring up, kill innocent people and government will reward them by giving them what they demand. Nigeria we hail thee.

  • efada acha

CONSTITUTIONALLY DOES THE GOVERNOR HAVE THE RIGHT TO CEDE PART OF THE STATE TO FULANI HERDSMAN?

    • john

Somebody should quickly tell the Agatu Chief the implication of the agreement he went into with the Fulani on behalf of his people, so he can withdraw it. Was he hypnotized? If this agreement will stand only time will tell. What happens to the bill against open grazing in Benue State that has passed second reading? Why didn’t the governor cede part of Tiv land for the Fulani.? Och’ Idoma should not take this lightly.

WHAT A USELESS PEOPLE CALL TIV, WHAT A GOD FORSAKING TRIBE, WHAT AN ANIMAL CALL ORTOM..SUCH IDIOTIC GOVERNOR, YOU WANT TO FINISH IDOMA PEOPLE,WORSE THING IS USELESS DAVID MARK KEEP MUTE.

  • Say the truth

This show how consistently inconsistent APC government has been across board. I think the governor once said there was no land to be ceded to Fulani in Benue? What has changed? After all the open protests by the victims themselves how come they agreed to this deal? This is how the problem of plateau state started. The occupier were later to demand and were rewarded with a local government headquarters of their own as indigenes. Today the result of that decision is glaring for all to see. Give them (the herdsmen) your hand they will later hold your neck. The governor has sold out IMO. He finally bowed to political pressure and that is shameful. What is the meaning of ‘the indigenous Fulani herdsmen known to the agatu people before the crisis’. Is there anything like ‘indigenous Fulani herdsmen’ from Benue state? The word indigenous confer on them rights too. Whatever we do today becomes history tomorrow.

    • Baka

Take it or live it, the Fulani as other Nigerians have right to live or move to anywhere in Nigeria. Whoever insisted that the Fulani will not be allow to live in peace shall also know no peace. The thinking that they are illiterate and you so called educated can turn the constitution upside down when you have any problem with them can not work. That’s why you are always at the recieving end; God is always on the side of truth.

The question is not about Live but taking some one`s land and giveing it another in the name of being a Governor. He will not be Governor for Life and Buhari will not be Life President too. This nothing but creating problems in the name of looking for PEASE.

    • vay

It’s the most retarded thing to do,for any state to cede lands to fulanis . Every one knows, fulanis r virus and cancerous,if they infect small part of you, better u quickly cut it out or else u ll be deceased.

  • efada acha

mike inalegwu is part of this evil,Benson Abounu, and Godwin onah are all evil this is the right time for David Mark and other prominent Idoma sons to visit the president and tell him the consent of the Idoma People were not sought and this could snow ball in to something violent. The Tivs and the herdsmen have been at loggerheads for a very long time before Agatu crises came up and Ortom does not deems it fit to cede Tiv land to the fulanis. This speaks more volume and why is Al makura interested in Benue land even though he is not the governor of the state .we need clarification on this. mike, Benson and chief Onah is rewriting history of the Idoma people

  • victor

This is shameful, the beareaved are still mourning and you are compensating those that caused the harm. This governor is mad, did he pay compensation to the families of those that lost loved ones.

  • DOCTOR TRUTH

Next time Nigerians should be careful about voting a fulani man as president. If the government can identify the fulani herdsmen responsible for the killings for negotiations then they should be arrested. It is actions like this that makes people lose faith in government and take law into their hands. If our security agencies are not capable of providing security for citizens then they should consider allowing citizens to arm and defend themselves.

Is too bad that the IDOMA nation don’t have a true leader with passion for their people.
