President Muhammadu Buhari has said no individual or interest group would be allowed to dictate to his government’s Economic Team.
The President said his administration is going ensure that whatever decision the team took was in the national interest and not for any section or group.
“We will listen to everybody. But, we are averse to Economic Teams whose private sector members frequently steer government policy to suit their own narrow interests, rather than the overall national interest,” he said.
The president, who was explaining the approach and conduct of the Economic Team in the discharge of its assignment, told Empowered Newswire that his administration would ensure that all Nigeria’s income was utilised for the good of the ordinary people.
President Buhari who spoke on the existence of an Economic Management Team for the
administration, said the team headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had as members, the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, and her counterparts in the Ministries of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udoma; and Industry, Trade & Investments, Okechukwu
Other members of the team include the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele; the National Economic Adviser, Oluyemi Dipeolu; and Director-General of the Debt Management Office, DMO, Abraham Nwankwo.
Critics had attributed the current challenges facing the country’s economy to the absence of an Economic Team to provide the direction of government economic policies.
“What do they mean by team?” the President asked. “The Vice President heads our economic management team.”‘
The team, which plays a leading role in the budgeting process and designed the Strategic Implementation Document once the fiscal document was passed and signed into law, meets at least once a week.
