Corrupt lawyers, judges won’t be spared– Magu

Acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has reassured lawyers and judges that comments attributed to him in recent media reports regarding the conduct of judicial officials were not intended at impugning their integrity.

According to him, his comments and activities of the commission should not be interpreted to mean a blanket indictment of all lawyers and judges but rather directed at a few bad eggs within the system.

“There is no way one can make a blanket statement on the integrity of lawyers and judges.

“Nigeria is blessed with some of the best lawyers and judges on the African continent.

“My worry is that the bad ones amongst them are giving the good ones a bad name,” he said.

He emphasized that the commission deeply appreciates the support of most conscientious, upright and patriotic members of the bar and bench (including defence counsels), leading to the commission’s unbeaten prosecution and conviction record.

Mr. Magu stated further that mindful of the fact that judges are constrained from publicly responding to criticism against them, the commission only employs legal and administrative procedures, including investigation of errant judicial officers and laying complaints against them before the National Judicial Council.

He also said the commission charged to court and secured convictions against a number of lawyers.

The EFCC boss invited all patriotic members of the bar and the bench to join the renewed campaign against corruption and money laundering, while exposing the corrupt among them.

“There is no blanket condemnation of lawyers and judges. But the corrupt few will not be spared,” he added.

“There is no blanket condemnation of lawyers and judges. But the corrupt few will not be spared,” – Magu

    Mr. Magu,

    The EFCC doesn’t punish.
You are not a military man, even tho you’re working for a dictator; you are not the judge.

Just investigate cases, get approval from the Attorney General, who is a part of your northern agenda to destroy our democracy by persecuting your enemies, get the cases in front of the judges, and your part is done.

You have no right whatsoever to punish anyone.

    • Buhari4Ever

Go and sleep!!! Thieves in high places must be punished.

        Magu is out of order!

        • Sir Demo

To thieves, yes! To patriotic Nigerians HE IS NOT DOING ENOUGH! To PMB, he is doing his job. To God, he is a beloved that wage war against the enemies of the masses!

    • Apu

Great stuff. You’ve cried for 8 months. You have 3 yrs and 4 months ahead. You are not doing badly……cry on..

      • Simon Templar

3 years and 4 months? Who will vote for them ever again? Remembver that Modu is their new Jona

    • Sir Demo

“Will not be spared” to you mean punish? I tire o.

  • Ini Jeremiah

Why insulting lawyers and judges this way?
Magu are you claiming to be more saint than the Pope?

    • Apu

Jona’s men! Haba. una no de tire?

      • Simon Templar

    • chukwu michael

Just seriously seeking for Buhari’s attention to make him full chairman than acting.

      • Dare

        We know where you belong.

    • Rommel

So what are you implying, that things should be left the way they are?

  • Ken Peter

  • Ken Peter

    Amen ooooooo

  • MushinSpeaks

If only our judiciary can be sincere and join in this fight against corruption, we will have a saner environment.

  • Netanyahu

You have nothing to worry about or explaining. There are very many corrupt lawyers and judges, sometimes worse than armed robbers they prosecute. There is no doubt about that. The other support staff in the entire judiciary are the worst. What are we talking about? Can one get anything, just anything done in the judiciary without greasing palms? I have always maintained that you cannot fight corruption with the kind of security agencies (police, Immigration, Customs, Warders & even NSCDC) and the judiciary we have in place. It will be like building a new house on a heap of refuse without any foundation.

The only time a corrupt judiciary is awesome for the country, is when you have a dictator as president.

      • Ben

What then happen when you have a clueless president?

  • chukwu michael

    Like Lamorde.

  • Mugu has no credibility. He is a “shoe shiner” that serves his piper. We don’t believe in his service and we distrust him. Mugu shall be gone sooner or later.

    • Sir Demo

We? The Wailers or Ekpas or BiafRATs? Definitely not Nigerians

    • Prophet

we hate to resort to insults but you asked for this one and we must inform you that you seem to be a cross between a moron and an Orangutan….a ‘Morangotan’ if you will!

  • Prophet

Magu, the Judicial system is an adversarial system in which a group tries to defeat another with anything and everything possible. While we agree with you that there are corrupt judges in the Nigerian system, we must point out to you that your statement that there are corrupt lawyers in Nigeria is a meaningless statement.

Can lawyers break the law? Of course! they are human beings and when they do, you treat them like law breakers (e.g. Metuh). but Their profession by nature tasks them with doing everything possible on behalf of their clients and they are trained for that purpose only……..and yes, doing everything possible on behalf of their client includes giving such clients advise on how to defeat the system .

It is up to you to every party to find the smartest lawyers to best represent their individual interests. So you should find smart lawyers that will best represent the government. Lawyers that are not only smart enough to notice when the opponent is doing doing something illegal but with the capacity to prove it in court and have such lawyers face the music.

if you Say there are unethical lawyers,,,fine, we will give you that. but when you say there are corrupt lawyer you are not making any sense. Take doctors for instance, they are trained to save lives and if they come across a scene where they find 80 children that have been killed by one single injured evil adult that is himself close to death, their job is to try to save that evil man’;s life by all means possible, if they don’t, they would have broken their professional oath to do no harm!
