Why new Vice-Chancellors were appointed for nine federal universities — Committee of Vice-Chancellors

National University Commission, Abuja.

The Secretary-General, Committee of Vice-Chancellors (CVC), Michael Faborode, has said some of his colleagues reportedly removed Saturday were not sacked but that their tenures would expire on Feb. 15.

Mr. Faborode, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja, said that it would not be fair to say that nine of the 12 vice-chancellors were sacked.

Reports Saturday had indicated that the Federal Government had sacked the Vice Chancellors of 12 Federal Universities that were established by the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

The report added that the Vice-Chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was also sacked.

The affected universities are: Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State, Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State and Federal University, Wakari, Taraba State.

Others are Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Federal University, Ndufe-Alike, Ebonyi State and Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Also affected are Federal University Gashua, Yobe State, Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State and Federal University, Kebbi.

But Mr. Faborode of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors said, “The tenure of the vice-chancellors of nine of these universities expires on Feb. 15.

“It will be unfair to say that they were sacked; they have exhausted their tenure; when your tenure is not renewed; it does not mean you are sacked.
“I do not know the reasons why the vice-chancellors of the other three universities were affected,’’ Mr. Faborode said.

It is better to get and give the facts right first time.

    • Julius

      I agree.

  • Reason-ability

Why are our journalists so irresponsible? What do they gain by telling lies? It seems as if they believe that you do not get readers if the news is not bad news or is it that they are PDP apologists who will see nothing good in an APC government? I shudder to think that journalism in Nigeria is now only about sensationalism and lies!

    • Rumournaire

It is indeed sad that our media houses misrepresent facts just to be sensational. It is partly due to ignorance – a lack of understanding that the vice-chancellor’s position is tenured and when your tenure expires, you leave. But our sensational media all reported the ending of a tenure as a “sack”. All such media houses owe Nigerians, especially the affected vice-chancellors an apology.

You are very correct. Check out also the news about the arrest of General Wiwa which is completely false. It is now apparent that some newspaper/news-outlets are hell bent on causing disaffection for the administration of Buhari. Gen Wiwa is an Ogoni man, may be the idea is to turn the Ogoni people against the President. All these still point to the level of corruption in the society. Some PDP people are definitely sponsoring all these lies. By PDP people I mean PDP members and their customers. Even Premium Times is guilty of very misleading headlines.
Buhari will do well to take a closer look at the civil servants especially from Directors up. He should know by now that these folks will do everything to thwart his efforts and make him look incompetent. His experience at the United Nations meeting and the budget should raise the red flag.

Mr un-Reason-ability, when a VC’s tenure is expiring, the position is advertised widely, and the university council screens the applicants and makes the appointment. That’s the process. Anything else is impunity. And dictator Bokohari is an expert in impunity. Eg, swearing to false affidavits since 1962 to get everything, including the presidency.

  • Julius

Now, lets see the bigots that were on here ranting about Buhari this Buhari that to come out and apologize. It doesnt matter anyway because they are not relevant in the first place. Shame on them.

      • Julius

You know they will find something else to complain about. One loser has already came out ,asking why it wasnt advertised in the news paper !.lolz. Imagine that .He is mad because the Northerners were replaced by the Northerners. lmaooo !. What a moron.

  • Romberg

They were not sacked, their tenures ended. Fine! But that is 9 out of 12. How were the replacements of the entire 12 appointed, even without councils? How come it is unclear why the other three were replaced too? Secrecy is a failure of government! As far as I am concerned, the govt needs a lot of explaining to do e.g. why most of gh appointees are from Kano and why a few of them were ‘transfered’ like high schools teachers….

  • Isi Agwo

When a VC’s tenure is expiring, the position is advertised widely, and the university council screens the applicants and makes the appointment. That’s the process. Where were those VC positions advertised? Appointing 4 VCs of Kano State origin out of 12 is typical of tribalist and insensitive Bokohari.

the President is from Kastina, you know

  • Davosky

The truth of the matter is that university council are partial as it was in unizik. If I am the president I will do it as national job opportunity. Advertise for prof’s to apply, screen and employ 36 + fct, deploy them to different universities irrespective of where u come from. That way d council members will seat up to their responsibilities.
