Former Human Rights Commission Chairman, Odinkalu, loses dad

Prof Chidi Odinkalu

Augustine Odinkalu, the father of the immediate past Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, is dead.

He was aged 79.

The former Human Rights Chief, who broke the news to PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday, said his late father, a life-long teacher and a devoted catholic, passed on at about 4.17 p.m. on Christmas eve.

“I came home November 28 to find him in bad shape. So, we rallied and took him into emergency hospital care. He was there till about December18, when he asked to be discharged. We got him discharged on December 21 and brought him home to the village,” Mr. Odinkalu said.

On his return from the hospital, the elder Odinkalu showed signs of recovery, slept well and rested throughout December 22.

Mr. Odinkalu said his father’s health condition started deteriorating the following day. One of his children, a Catholic priest, Obinna Odinkalu, was subsequently invited to give him Extreme Unction (last rites) on December 24.

Shortly after the final rites were given to him at about 3 p.m., he said his father passed on and was confirmed dead within the next hour.

“It was a peaceful passage, at home and in the presence of our Mum, three children and grand-children. He left us a rich legacy of decency, deep faith, service, selflessness and sacrifice. I’m confident he is in a better place,” Mr. Odinkalu said of his departed father.

His remains have since been deposited in the mortuary pending the completion of burial arrangements by the family.
