Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers has promised to settle the backlog of salaries and other allowances owed players of the Dolphins FC of Port Court from August 2014 to May this year.
This is contained in a statement by the media manager of the club, China Acheru on Wednesday.
Mr. Acheru said the governor’s promise was part of his message to the team before the departure of the team to Nnewi for a Globacom Premier League match against Ifeanyi Ubah FC of Nnewi.
“Gov. Wike told the players that the salaries owed them will be paid from August 2014 to May 2015. You all know the team has been owed salaries and match bonuses since August 2014,’’ the statement said.
According to Mr. Acheru, the captain of the team, Festus Austin, said the message from the governor is uplifting. “We just want to thank you sir. We know you are not the one, who actually owed us, but it is a debt you inherited.
“So, we are happy that just less than three weeks after you were sworn in, you have given a timeline to pay us.
“The players are happy. We have been trying our best, and we will do better now that we have hopes of being paid,” Austin said.
