President Goodluck Jonathan saved Nigeria from bloodshed by conceding defeat to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari, the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustee Secretary, Walid Jibrin, said on Tuesday in Nasarawa.

He called on politicians to emulate Mr. Jonathan by accepting the outcome of the March 28 and April 11 elections in good fate, in order to forestall post-election violence and in the interest of peace and development.

“Jonathan’s acceptance of defeat when he lost his second-term presidential ambition to Buhari saved Nigeria from post-election violence and bloodshed.

“The acceptance of the defeat does not only save Nigeria from post-election crisis, it also gave Jonathan a high level of respect from all Nigerians and even the international community

“This shows that Jonathan is a true democrat, who has the interest of Nigerians at heart. And we will continue to pray for him and other elected leaders to enable them to succeed.

“I also want to call on all stakeholders and other Nigerians to do everything possible to be at peace, because no nation can achieve development without peace, which is not negotiable.”

Mr. Jibrin expressed optimism that the PDP would bounce back in the future and urged the supporters of the party to unite and embrace one another, irrespective of their backgrounds.

He explained that PDP government, since its inception in Nigeria, had done a lot in fighting poverty, hunger, unemployment as well as promoting peace and boosting socio-economic development.

The PDP BOT secretary said that Jonathan demonstrated a high level of maturity by conceding defeat and urged other politicians to always emulate him.

Mr. Jibrin urged the party’s supporters and other Nigerians to be law abiding, respectful of constituted authority, peaceful and have tolerate for each other, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliation. (NAN)
