We are on standby to assist INEC — Navy

Rear Admiral Henry Babalola, the Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Nigerian Navy,
has said that naval personnel were on stand-by to assist the Independent National Electoral Commission convey election materials to riverine areas.

Mr. Babalola said this on Saturday in Calabar during an interview.

“The navy is not directly involved in this election. But we are on stand-by to assist INEC in conveying election materials to riverine areas whenever we are being called.

“As you can see, the waterways are safe. We have restricted movement of passengers’ boats, unless for those on essential duties as concerns election,’’ he said.

He said the navy had mounted internal security in all the units to ensure that the election was safe and peaceful.

“For this particular election, we have been mandated to stop illegal immigrants from coming to vote, illegal movement of arms, protect our economic assets and our oil vessels.

“We are aware of some flash points in this election and as we speak, the navy is currently patrolling both land and waterways of those areas.

“The Nigerian Navy air armed helicopter is also available. I can assure you that we are ready to ensure safety of citizens during and after this election,’’ the FOC asured.
