How we secured Igbo businesses, property during civil war – Buhari

A socio-cultural organization, Igbo Delegates Assembly, has thrown their weight behind the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, in the March 28 presidential election.

Speaking at the Buhari campaign office in Abuja Friday, President General of the group, which comprise of Igbo’s living in the northern part of Nigeria, Sam Enyama, described Mr. Buhari as a man of impeccable character and urged people of the south east to downplay any religious and tribal sentiments in the coming polls and vote for him.

He said a Buhari presidency would address the pressing needs of all the regions.

The Eze’udo of the 19 northern state, Uche Egenti, said as Igbos who lived in the north for many years, they know Mr. Buhari and what he stands for.

“We are here to support your aspiration to become the president of this country,” he said. “We know you, it is easier to work with you because of what you stand for. We are not ready to be plunged into another civil war and we are pleading with you to help us organize Nigeria again. We want discipline to reign again.

“We want to plead with you to help galvanized Nigeria once more, let the discipline rain again in Nigeria, let the polity be sensitized.

“A lot of people have complained that the issue about you is religion but we know you are not a religious bigot. You are a very firm, articulated officer of the Nigerian army. In 1983 when Nigeria was at a verge of collapse, you came in and rescue it.”

He also said the group was in full support of the use of the permanent voters’ card, because it would enhance decency in the polity and bring credibility to the election.

“We are here to let you know that the Igbos are behind you,” he said.

Responding, Mr. Buhari thanked the group for the visit and endorsement.

He said their faith in him would not be in vain.

“I assure you, APC will not disappoint you,” he pledged.

He also said the meeting was important for him because it involved a group with lot of experience regarding crisis in the country, having been personally affected one way or the other.

Mr. Buhari said Igbo businessmen remained the economic backbone of particularly the north.

“I could recall the good old days, when it is Christmas and New Year, virtually, all businesses closed shop in the north especially in Kano until the Igbos come back and then the businesses will pick up again,” he said.

The former Head of State also recalled that many Igbos who left the north during the Civil war, came back after and found most of their property intact.

“Wherever Igbos have property in a town, there were committees in the respective towns, the property were repaired and given for rent, while an account was opened for them,” he said. “After the war, the Igbos that survived came back and claimed their property and the savings made from the rent.”

Mr. Buhari said the civil service made all of that possible, adding “I thank the civil servants of those good old days because the committees were developed with very clear and firm terms of reference and properties belonging to the Igbos were looked after and they claimed them back. I think they did well.”

Why I joined politics

Mr. Buhari also went down memory lane recounting all the offices he held both in the military and outside.

He also recalled having spent 20 months in detention

He said two reasons made him join politics.

Firstly, he narrated how after his regime was overthrown and he was jailed, people kept coming to see him in numbers, which prompted him to give politicking a thought.

“I was sitting at home after I got out of detention and thought people will leave me alone,” he said. “I didn’t even build a filling station, not to talk of owning an oil block and so I thought I have lost their sympathy.

“But they kept coming to me and there was nothing I could do and then I speculated that maybe when I get into partisan politics, I will get into a position to be heard.”

He also said another incident was the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991 in spite of its nuclear arsenal, which was greater than Nato’s and superior social programme.

“It just collapsed and people just went home; suddenly there are 18 Republics in the old Soviet Union,” he said. “That was when I decided that the best form of governance is multi party democratic system with a big proviso that elections must be free and fair. Otherwise, the whole thing will be a sham. It is in pursuit of that that I am on my fourth attempt to get the highest office in the land.

“In the first three attempts, I ended up at the Supreme Court because I believe in the system. There is no point believing in a system and conducting yourself haphazardly.

“I fill fulfilled because when I decided to join politics in April 2002, I joined APP even though there was PDP and they were in government. But I went into the opposition even though there were governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives in the party, but the following year, they gave me the ticket and what did I do with the ticket? I got the late Chuba Okadigbo to be my running mate and by that, I blew the mind of people about my tribal or religious position.

“In 2007, I picked Chief Ume Ezeoke and again, he was Igbo, so, I dispel any question about my being a religious bigot or a tribalist. Later on, I picked Pastor Bakare and now, I am running with a Pastor, Osinbajo. The issue of religion has been taken into account in this country, but then, it is what human beings are worth in politics that they may be able to earn the efforts they are putting in.”

Ndi Igbo are very wise indeed. With the threat of vengeance by the Apc on the horizon if they lose the upcoming elections, the Igbos want their interest in the north secured but the wiser ones have since cleared out from the area. Buhari do you think the Igbos forget things that easily??? Remember the intimidations during the civil war??? Such things are not forgotten…

    • Awarawa

Food for thought. North East with all insurgency and IDP had more PVCs than the stable South East states put together. Lagos, Oyo and other south west states can only manage 9 million when Kano and other relatively smaller states got a whooping 15 million PVCs. North 57% South 47%. Hummmmmmmmmm. Over to Okorocha.

It always pains me to ask, why Igbos who lives in North more than all other ethnic group (outside north) combined together, Who speak Hausa more than the Yorubas and Ijaw, Some Igbos even speak Fulani and Kanuri, most of whom were borned and brought-up in north ( Including Ojukwu and Zik), who are familiar with the cultures and norms of the Northern people than any other ethnic group. Who lives and run their businesses in the north more than any where else, got properties and assets in north than any other group outside. Why are they always against the wishes and aspirations of their host communities. Why are Igbos always against anything north?, Why are Igbos who supposedly be telling their people back home how trust worthy their friend in north are, not doing that. I even heard some Igbos calling Rochas “a Hausa man” just bcos the man knows how to interact and dine very well with his Hausa friends whom he grew up together with. But, I can clearly see that; they are doing very bad to their people than good, bcos now that the Yorubas ( Who are always politically not close to north b4 now) are into allience with Buhari. The Igbos will be politically irrelevant in Nigeria for decades.

    • Awarawa

Do you how many Igbo people that has been murdered in the north for the sake of religion?! That those statistics are covered up is not enough reason for you people to want to turn truth on its head now.

      • abc

Hmm, people like you will never cease to amuse me. I want to put the record straight for you here. 1. Here are you people saying Buhari sent Jim Nwobodo to 300 yrs in jail, Okiro to that etc. but, why won’t you check the history to its end. Buhari came in military coup and jail corrupt out of the so called Igbo leaders after appearing b4 panel. Did I need to remind you that, the Igbo officers who did the 1966 coup summarily killed all Northern leaders ( Ahamadu Bello, Tafawabale and many others). Therefore, who are the wickeds here.
        2. When you declare war, then what do you expect. Hahaha. War is war. Whether you win or loss. Should it your ragtag Biafran boys outs succeeded in killing the NA, would you be saying Northeners were killed will be sympathising for them. It is war fought and you lose, then why complaining.

    • Saydo Shan

Ibos are very fine pple. U have fine pple all over Nigeria. And U have bad pple all over. But believe me, the good pple are more in number everywhere. As regards Northerners and Ibos, their is a need for rapprochement because the Ibos have been made to entertain fears bcos it is they and their businesses that are attacked time and again. This even happens in other parts of the country, but it seldom does happen like in the North.

GOD willing, GMB shall win the election of March 28. He should be a just, true and firm Nigerian leader who will lead even handedly with justice and equity. I bliv, or rather know, he will do that. The legacy he will leave is what is important to him. The legacy of a true united Nigeria, where every law abiding citizen and his properties are protected. Where every Nigerian can prosper anywhere. Tribe and religion will never be an issue under that dispensation. It is all about Nigeria and Nigerians. And GMB has all it takes to achieve that.

    • Bo Biz

@evi,I don’t know if you’re a Biafran or not,and if yes your age.I am a true Biafran that witnessed the ugly sides of the war by both the Northerners and the South South people against Ndigbo.Be informed that General Buhari as a professional Soldier is duty bound to fight for and defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity against all internal revolts and external aggressions. The General performed his military duties, and is not guilty of any war crime whatsoever.
The pogrom and genocidal massacres of Ndigbo were committed mostly by the Hausa Fulani lynch mobs in their territories before the war itself was fought and won in Biafraland. Awolowo and General Gowon should be hold responsible for massive sufferings of Igbo children, women and the elderlies during and after the civil war.
I hold no personal grudge against General Buhari, but against Jonathan Goodluck’s kinsmen and the entire south southerners that sabotaged the Biafran Cause. The Ijaws and, their fellow south southerners betrayed Biafrans and gave the Nigerian forces their territories to launch attack against Ndigbo. The Ijaws and their cohorts confiscated properties of Ndigbo ( branding our properties ‘Abandoned Properties’).My family lost 2 houses in Port Harcourt.
The Ijaws and the south southerners were and are still worse than the Hausa Fulanis. How many votes did Zik get there in 1979 and 1983? How many vote did Dim Ojukwu get from them when he contested as APGA presidential candidate?
Goodluck Jonathan is a failed president, and deserves going back to his otuoke creek now.

      • Oweja

This is a bitter comment. Learn to forgive!!!

      • Uzoma

You almost fooled everyone. But your last line betrayed you.

At this point, all we can say is let the better of the two men win but, in particular, may it be a victory for Nigeria.

        • Bo Biz

Uzoma, Facts are sacred ! Marshal out verifiable proofs to counter my position on The pogrom / massacres of Ndigbo in the North,General Buhari’s impeccable military duties,The Ijaws/South Southerners’ Betrayal of Biafra,South Southerners’ Confiscation of properties of Ndigbo in their territories,South southerners not voting for ZIk and Dim Ojukwu.
On a more serious note,my last line did not betray anything, but it’s my candid opinion borne out of objective analysis of Jonathan’s presidency.Politics is about sincere, dedicated public service in the overall national interest. Leadership is about decisions, and the burden of leadership is responsibilities,so a leader must be decisive in his responsibilities.
The primary duty of government is the protection of lives and properties of Nigerians, and improving the quality of lives of the people.Jonathan failed woefully to provide this leadership both politically and otherwise. His sloppy,wishy-washy handling of statecraft and security is to say the least repulsive. How many times do we expect to be beaten to get shy? Jonathan had his chance, but failed to deliver, and must be shown the way out.Nigeria needs a leader of Buhari ‘s status today to salvage it from the bandits.Buhari is not a saint,no one is pretending otherwise, and we don’t need a saint to salvage us,but a dedicated and committed leader to lead from the front. Buhahari arrives at Chatham House this morning with governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State
He arrived in a private people people carrier – see above.  Why was he leaving in a police van?  Someone nearby can be heard shouting “take the picture” and “we got him”.

Is this related to the failed attempt to kidnap Umaru Dikko from the streets of London in the 1980s and fly him back to Nigeria?

We are trying to confirm this with London’s Metropolitan Police.

It was like a joke yesterday when a video showing clips of General Buhari being conveyed to a waiting British Police Armor Criminal Carrier {ACC} to be whisked off, was shared from the Media and Publicity page of the PDPPCO on facebook. Though its source is yet unknown. In the video as attached here, General Buhari was accompanied by His Personal Lawyer, His Personal Doctor and 2 leaders (Ameachi and some other unknown leader) of the APC into the waiting van admits tight security.

Details of eye witnesses in the Chatham House events informed fact-seeking Nigerians that the General and his entourage had arrived the venue in a Limousine. Though some APC apologist had made claims that the General arrived in a London taxi which has been dispelled as the regular falsehood of the APC. On inquiries from some Nigerians in the UK on why a Nigerian former General and currently a Presidential was whisked away by the police, after the widely publicized event that was shaded in secrecy led to some revelations.

The General was actually whisked off by a British arm of the Interpol (International Police) on an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court of The Hague.

Further revelations showed that a Criminal Case against Humanity, filed in the by one Professor GORAN SLUITER, an international Law Professor of the University Amsterdam, sometime in the first week of February will be due for hearing on the second week of April. The ICC took the advantage of raising an arrest warrant to secretly arrest the General and be kept until the court hearing. Reasons was that in an unlikely event that the opposition party were to win the March 28th elections, it would be difficult to arrest the arrest the General to face his charges.

General Buhari will be standing trial for his crimes against humanity where over 800 Nigerian youths were killed during the post-election crisis in 2011, and another 65,000 persons displaced. The family of the slain have already given their evidence and are seeking justice for the death of the family members. Joint as co- plaintiffs in the case are youths that were dismembered and handicapped during the post-election crisis. Also as evidence are recordings of General Buhari publicly inciting his followers to kill all those that tried to take away their votes. In another evidence, are voice recordings of Buhari where he told some members of the press that the youths that died, deserved to die.

Findings revealed that the General was actually kept in the custody of the police in an undisclosed location for four days while members of the opposition rallied round for his bail. As we speak, some members has been held as surety for the General with some advance bonds have been made by his party.

Part of the conspiracy revealed that the party hierarchy are not really bothered about what happens to Buhari as the Vice Presidential candidate will automatically stand in as President in an unlikely event that the APC wins the elections.

It is also revealed that as at when the Interpol arrived the venue, The APC Leaders like Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rotimi Ameachi had quietly scampered for safety in a like events that they would be asked to accompany the General. They were not sure what the offences were. Ameachi was practically forced to join them.. he was said to have told the Police to allow him walk in alone. Notice a policeman pushing him in? Tinubu was no where to be found till the departure of the Van.

Jonathan’s people, the Ijaw, are the only ones who have refused to return the property of Igbo people in Port Harcourt, since after the civil war. Yet, the Igbo stand by a people who confiscated their property.

    • Oweja

Na true! They are in the same camp now with David Mark, who as a young officer then, presided over the plundering of Ndigbo’s wealth in the old Rivers State. Human memory is relatively short.

      • Guguru

I am still confused why the Igbo people refused to demand that all Igbo property be returned ot their rightful owners before any Ijaw can be supported by Igbo people.

    • agu

The ijaws only seized property but buhari and his kinsmen murdered men and children and raped their women to death, Big difference.
