A bomb scare on Tuesday temporarily disrupted the scheduled visit of the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, to Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital, where she was to address supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The rally was scheduled for the party’s secretariat located along the Presidential Boulevard, Abeokuta.

Mrs. Jonathan was represented at the rally by the wife of the vice president, Aminat Sambo.

The programme was on-going when suddenly a rumour of possible bomb blast caused many to leave the venue in fear.

However, a former Ogun State Speaker, Titi Oseni, noticing the gradual departure of the supporters, clarified that it was a mere rumour and there was no actual bomb.

The master of ceremony, Lekan Tejuoso, also tried to calm the departing supporters.

Mr. Tejuoso, a former Commissioner in Ogun State, say the rumour was sponsored by the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state.

He begged the PDP supporters not to leave and all those already outside the venue to return as there was no cause for alarm

In her speech, Mrs. Sambo said she was delighted to be with the women and to stand in for the wife of Mrs. Jonathan who, she said, was unavoidably absent due to other national assignments.

“But she sends you her good wishes,” Mrs. Sambo said. “She sends you her love and her support and she appreciates the women of Ogun State. What we are seeing today, to me, is only a celebration. We are not here to campaign. Party has started. We are just here to thank our women. The rousing welcome and the reception you have accorded us is an indication that PDP is coming back to Ogun State. If there is a place where we need change, it is Ogun State but we need transformation in Abuja.

“So, my dear women, I urge you to come en masse on March 28 and vote for Mr. President. We are all aware of the good works they have started and I think it is advisable that we allow them to continue what they have started. The women are so excited and they are so appreciative. This administration has been a gender-friendly administration and we hope the president will continue to support women to attain not only the 35 per cent affirmative action that we have been calling for but also to take it up to 50 per cent.

She also gave kudos to the past administration of Gbenga Daniel.

“We have seen your handwork here,” she said to Mr. Daniel who was present at the event. “Your coming here today testifies that you are still loved by your people and it also testifies that the people are yearning and calling for PDP to come back into this state. And insha Allah, PDP will come back to Ogun State.

“But we need to do more. We need to go and get our PVC. Anybody that hasn’t collected his or her card should please do so. That is your power; that is your right and bring back the mandate that we have been expecting from you as women. So, my dear women, I want to thank you for coming, I want to thank you for showing the support to Mr President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

“I am quite sure you have tasted and you have been a witness to the good works that he has done in this great state of yours. I’m quite sure you are aware of the new power plant that has been constructed; I am quite sure you are aware of the transformation that has been going on in our transport system, the roads are now motorable.

“Work is ongoing on Lagos-Benin road. So, we want you to continue to enjoy the goodies. Our railways are now working, our schools have been impacted with great infrastructures and our universities have been having a new uplift. I want to assure you that they will continue to support education, they would continue to transform the health sector, they would continue to transform the educational sector.

“Our airports are now having facelift everywhere you go. I’m quite sure, with your mandate they will continue to do more. I would like you to vote for continuity, I want to urge you to vote for sustainability, I want to urge you to vote for transformation and most importantly, to vote for PDP.”
