Lagos APC condemns Senate confirmation of Obanikoro

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has described the confirmation of Musiliu Obanikoro as a minister by the Nigerian Senate, despite damaging implications in a rigging scandal in Ekiti, as a show of shame that further muddles the image of Nigeria and the Senate.

The party said that by its action, the Senate showed that it was part of the grand conspiracy to institute a legacy of shame and corruption in Nigeria so long as such grows the selfish interests of the PDP.

In a release in Lagos, signed by the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Joe Igbokwe, the party said the confirmation of Obanikoro showed the sinister intent of the Senate leadership and the PDP to institute deep rooted corruption and illegality in Nigeria so long as their nefarious interests were met.

It said the Senate leadership should cover its head in shame for trampling on the integrity of due process by confirming a person that was deeply implicated in an election rigging plot in Ekiti as a Minister despite wide ranging protests against his nomination.

“It is obvious that the PDP presidency that nominated Obanikoro and the PDP members of the Senate that forced through decency and protests of Nigerians to approve his nomination are hell bent on corrupting both the laws and institutions of the Nigerian State by that howling act of rewarding criminality,” the party said.

“It was obvious that the ministerial nomination and the controversial confirmation are means by which a corrupt and senseless party wants to mock Nigerians, mock its laws and mock decency to reward a character that should be docked for crimes against the state. It is just too absurd that a party should visit these illegalities on a nation.

“The country is once again, assailed by the lawless inclination of the PDP as a party that thrives in such criminality as election rigging and which uses same to reward perpetrators who should be jailed for high crime which the Ekitigate scandal amounts to. What the Senate and its PDP members forced through in confirming Obanikoro is the audacious reign of illegality and impunity and Nigerians have a golden chance to throw the PDP to the dustbin of history on March 28.

“We note that the outgoing President, who was alleged to have set up the Ekiti rigging plot has bluntly refused to investigate the Ekiti scandal but had rather nominated Obanikoro for ministerial position when he should be docked. It is also important to note that the PDP members of the Senate practically forced Obanikoro’s confirmation through the stout resistance of the APC senators, the human rights community, the press and the critical mass that see the entire process as rewarding crime and have therefore called for the withdrawal of Obanikoro’s nomination.

“While we call on the country’s media, civil society groups and the critical mass to continue to insist that this reward for criminality does not stand, we urge Nigerians to see in the appointment and confirmation of Obanikoro as PDP’s bold statement on impunity and corruption, which it had made cornerstones of its misrule and throw out the PDP with the vehemence of a people tired of such brazen promotion of criminality by a cabal that sees Nigeria as its private estate. We urge Nigerians to make a loud issue of the nomination and confirmation of an alleged election rigger as a minister few weeks to a critical election, as an insult to our collective intelligence and one of the primary reasons to throw out the PDP with an emphatic thud on March 28.”

The effusions and vituperation emanating from the APC, particularly, its Lagos wing, in the matter of Senator Obanikoro’s confirmation by the Senate makes me to wonder and express a lot of sympathy on how robotized and vegetarian that some human beings have been turned by drivers of APC. Nevertheless, I am one such person that insists on holding politicians up to their claimed standard. I am also one who insists that ours should not be of “One Nation, Two Moralities” (apologies to Shaka Momodu). How do I mean ? We seem suddenly to have relapsed into inexplicable amnesia with regard to the political contest for occupation of the office of the Governor of Ekiti State. We seem to have forgotten even our present history in that regard. But I refuse to be duped by by APC media and propaganda machine that Ayo Fayose’s second coming is not one of its kind. Certainly, it is one of its kind.

Now, let’s for the purpose of argument hold that the allegation against Obanikoro and co. is true, is it not another Ekitigate – the SECOND Ekitigate, properly speaking ? Then, which Ekitigate is the anti-Obanikoro now referring to ? Is it the one that brought in Kayode Fayemi – through the Salamic judgments – which facts were revealed and displayed by Engr. Segun Oni himself and which call logs are there with the relevant GSM service provider and which judgment has remained a dent not only on the image of the judiciary but in the mind of anybody with conscience, and properly speaking, the FIRST Ekiyigate ? Or, is it the one that brought in Fayose allegedly through Army intervention – the SECOND Ekitigate ?

Where were these anti-Obanikoro puritans at the time of FIRST Ekitigate ? Should we act only on one and go to sleep on the other ? And which immorality or illegality will they choose to condemn ? Which immorality or illegality will they condone ? Their feign of ignorance on the FIRST Ekitigate whilst running amok on the SECOND presents the highest degree of dishonesty to be associated with decent human beings.

If there is SECOND Ekitigate (Fayose’s), there IS equally FIRST Ekitigate (Kayode Fayemi’s). We cannot pretend lack of knowledge of the FIRST. To do so is to confirm that our own dishonesty is more grievous and more deleterious to the Nigerian society than that of the participants in the First and Second Ekitigate gates. I insist we must visit both with our “righteous anger.” While we look and listen to tapes of the SECOND, we MUST equally read the call logs and listen to the voices in the FIRST. Unless and until that is done, the anti-Obanikoro hounds are nothing more than grand 419ers. For they cannot be allowed to establish for us, “One Nation, Two Moralities.”

Is Obanikoro a member of APC? Are these idio*s aware that he was not confirmed for appointment as a Commissioner in Lagos State? So, what is the basis of their protest?
