Pray For Peaceful Polls, PDP Urges Nigerians

Olisa Metuh

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged Nigerians to use this year’s Christian Lenten period to pray for peaceful conduct of the March 28 and April 11, 2015 general elections as well as re-dedicate themselves to the virtues of compassion, good neighbourliness and love for one another.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Ash Wednesday said Nigerians must use this period “to refocus their desires and work together as one united family under God, irrespective of ethnicity, political affiliations, class or creed”.

The party urged the citizens to ensure that they vote only peace-loving individuals at all levels and reject those associated with violence and bigotry.

“We must use this year’s Lent to reaffirm values that bind us together as a people. The fact that the March 28th Presidential and National Assembly elections fall within this solemn period, which is universally dedicated to fasting, prayers, penance and charity is of great significance, even as it provides us an ample opportunity to re-commit our democracy and dear nation to the Almighty God,” the statement said.

“We must therefore allow our thoughts and actions to be divinely directed. We must use the fasting period to strengthen our resistance to evil machinations that may present themselves against the success of the elections by not only shunning all forms of violence and squabbles but also ensuring that only peace-loving persons are elected at all levels,” the PDP said.

The party called on religious leaders to use the period of spiritual re-armament for effectual prayers and messages that emphasize love and peaceful co-existence in the country.

While reiterating its commitment to the unity, stability and prosperity of the nation, the PDP also urged the political class to eschew all statements and actions that promote division among the people.

It also called on those behind the insurgency ravaging the country to retrace their steps and understand that life is sacrosanct and should not be wasted for any reason whatsoever.

The PDP wished Nigerians a fruitful Lenten observance and prayed for endearing peace in the country.

Thank you Olisa Metuh. You are man of peace. May God bless and keep you. we wish Lai Mohammed can emulate you

  • Isa Aliyu

Thank you Chief Olisa Metu for choosing the way of peace. I wish others will emulate u and do same.
With people like you in politics, Nigeria will be better positioned for greatness.

  • Victor Gee

Metu remains the man. Very patriotic, vibrant and focused. Well I hope Nigerians of good Will will vote a candidate who abhors violence and have repeatedly said that his ambition does not worth the death of any Nigerian.

Compare it with the mam who said that if he loses the baboons must be soaked will blood.

Nigerians must rise and defend this democracy from the return of ex military coup plotters.

  • Anene Mercy

APC doesn’t believe in prayer. All the past criminals and nest of killers who left PDP because GEJ refused to cede Nigeria to them and perpetually mortgage the future of this country are now in APC. But with prayer Nigeria will outlive their gang up and Goodluck will prevail.

    Power is from God.

  • Etang Chris

With God all things are possible. We will keep praying for a peaceful election. God is taking note of the massacre going on in Nigeria just because some people want violent change.

They want to change from light to darkness, from young to old, from freedom to dictatorship, from democracy to dictatorship. From genuine transformation to deceitful change.

But baba God will never allow them.

  • inuwa kate

Oga Metu, we the Muslims are also praying for Nigeria and our party. I am from the north east and I can confirm that APC does not mean well for Nigeria. I pray to Allah that their evil wish won’t come to pass.

Nigeria will overcome APC and their devilish agenda.

  • danjuma

When read Metu’s press statement with that of Lia Muhammed, u will know which party that has the best interest of Nigeria. One wonders why a ruling party will be preaching for peace and and an opposition is busy making Nigeria un governable. And some gullibles are joining them to shout change.

    Allah help Nigeria.

I watched the two spokespersons on channel television tonight and while one (Mr Metuh)exudes confidence, intelligence and smiles, the other was fidgeting and exhibiting frustration and angst and the fact that he looks like a frog wearing goggles didn’t help his case at all. While one looks like the spokesperson of the national party in control of the best economy in africa and the third fastest growing in the world the other looks more like an angry islamic fundamentalist and spokesperson of a janjaweed party

  • tunji braimoh

We will continue to identify with the transformation agenda of MR president and the PDP ,the alternative is just not an option at all.The amalgamation of angry politicians in the APC made up of politicians that were swept away by the transformation tsunami of GEJ into the trashbin are clearly on a do or die mission to grab power by all means for their personal gains. We take solace in the GOD’S word in isaiah 54″15 that they will gather but so far as they are not of GOD they must surely scatter

As for me and my household we will vote for the devil we know ooo,all this noise about change from the very men that epitomises the whole problems of Nigeria will never have our votes oo,those ones na one chance. After all majority of the men that gave the PDP a bad name in those years are now in the APC starting from their navigator in chief

Having taken my time to go through the comments in this thread i am happy that other patriotic citizens of this country have started seeing what i saw and always talked about in this forum and that is about the young man Mr Metuh. Press statements should be intelligently packaged in civilized manner consonant with a developing society where the citizenry live in peace and harmony and the statements exuding hope, peace and love for one another.I don;t bother rmyself with reading press statements from Liar Mohammed and the APC anylonger because of the impression one gets after reading them as they usually contain threats or outright declarations of war, accusations on the president, the security forces, the inec in fact one begins to wonder if these people are Nigerians

    • shamsudeen sadiq

I agree with you,one cannot borrow intelligence, you either have it or you don’t.That young man will go places and i am happy he is a youth like me,it is we the youth that is now driving development the world over,Nigeria will not be different and that is why i can’t support Tinubu’s candidate despite that he is from my place here in daura

Goodluck Jonathan is indirectly fighting corruption without Anybody taking note of it.
He has successfully pushed most corrupt PDP members to APC which will enable him to execute his transformation agenda. If Buhari wants to fight corruption, let him start from APC where most corrupt PDP members are taking refuge..
