Nigeria2015: Parties should work together to save democracy – PDP

Olisa Metuh, PDP National Publicity Secretary.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on all political parties in the country as well as all other relevant stakeholders in the electoral process to relegate all narrow group interests and join hands with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to guarantee the success of the 2015 general elections.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Sunday said all parties must come together in the interest of the nation and ensure that measures that create the environment for credible, free and fair elections are firmly put in place.

“The responsibility of building a united, strong and prosperous nation anchored on democratic principles lies on all of us collectively. We therefore charge all political parties, other relevant groups and all stakeholders in the electoral process to jettison all personal/group interests and put that of our nation and its people ahead of all.
“The future of our nation is determined by what we do or say at this point in time. We must therefore resolve to work together as patriotic citizens and join hands with INEC and relevant institutions of government to ensure credible, free and fair elections devoid of rancour and avoidable disagreements.

“At this point, what should be paramount is the wellbeing of our people and the survival of our dear nation and its democracy. We must therefore close ranks as brothers and sisters and resist the machinations of enemies of our country who do not wish us well.

“In this regard, we must redirect our political discourse and energies to productive issues that promote national development, reinforce our unity and engender mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence of our people. It is only through this that we can create the enabling environment for peaceful general elections and guarantee the overall stability of our country.

“Nigeria is a great nation. We must appreciate the resilience of our people and their resolve to succeed. In the last four years, through the meticulous application of policies by the President Goodluck Jonathan-led PDP administration, our economy has grown to become the largest in Africa and the third fastest growing in the world, a feat that would not have been possible without the support of hard working Nigerians who have excelled in business and economy.

“Indeed, we cannot afford to fail our citizens at this time of our national life. We must work hard to continue to ensure that the environment that contributed to the successes we have recorded is adequately maintained and enhanced”, the PDP said.

The party also called on INEC to gird it loins and appreciate the fact that it is “saddled with an enormous responsibility and that “Nigerians expect nothing less than a transparent electoral process”.

Urging INEC to “work harder and effectively use the period provided by the shift in the dates of elections to perfect all arrangements including its processes and equipment for credible election,” the PDP said the commission should understand that “observations by stakeholders are not intended to castigate, weaken or destroy the electoral process but to assist in deepening democracy so that at the end of the day, Nigerians will be the ultimate winners”.

The party also urged the electoral umpire to adequately test-run its equipment in a mock election session, within two weeks to demonstrate and ensure their practicability and reliability in the field.

While commending INEC for sacking its two officials involved in denying non-indigenes of their voters cards in Lagos, the PDP said such practices are still going on in various parts of Lagos and other select states and urged the commission to ensure that the trend is completely checked and that all registered voters are given their PVCs to participate in the elections.

Finally, the PDP called on all registered voters to continue to show patriotism by obtaining their voter’s card and voting for the candidates of their choice in the elections, especially recognizing the need to move the nation in the path of peace, unity, tolerance, respect for the rule of law and personal freedom of all citizens.

Honestly, what I find baffling is why these PDP men like playing to the gallery.
I mean, WHICH parties should work together to ‘save democracy’? Which parties??
The last time I checked, one of the parties ws fielding a presidential candidate that truncated democracy and suspended most democratic institutions! Now PDP wants these undemocratic men to ‘save democracy’?? Wow!
Sad thing is, i hear no human has ever set eyes on the ‘ghost certificate’ of this same ‘democracy saver’!
I also heard if he can’t show the imaginary cert. In court, he might have to flee thru the ‘Nyako route’ to escape the Jail cell for perjury.
Nawa o. Could it be that the spirit of Democracy he tried destroying in 83/84 is back with a vengeance to haunt the Ex-Coupist?? The thing is beginning to look spiritual.
    Hmm..it is well..

    • godswill Ibe

Forget this Metuh and pdp. They think they are smart. After postponing the election and commenced their plan B strategy in ernest by hacking the phones of the APC members couple with using the military to intimidate the APC and more atrocities yet to be hatched, the party is now calling parties to work together. This is a broad day light deceit of which the blind can see it. I wonder the parties he was referring to. Meanwhile,we have resolved to vote out Jonathan first before the so called parties can work together. Buhari is already President-elect whether military or no military, wuru wuru or no wuru wuru, we are resolute and ready for this change. Buhari: the most competent.

      • charles peters

I’ve, politics is all about strategy. PDP has not violated any known law in doing what they did if ur accusation is anything to by. But pls tell APC to play by the rule. They should stop being violent.

  • Richard

This is the first time this guy has said something sensible. How I wish PDP Practised what they are preaching . The only party that is trying to truncate the wish of the people is PDP and their cohorts.

    • Giganto

Don’t fall into this cheap trap. Metuh’s idea of “working together” is for the other parties (especially at the National Assembly) to support the PDP’s idea of forming “Interim Government” under the clueless GEj

      • Richard

Mba, it’s not going to happen. Interim government is not in our constitution .

  • Abufata Gumi

Right on point Olisa Metuh. i wish Lai Mohammed will learn from Metuh and be patriotic in his statement, maybe the polity will not be as heated as it is if Lai speaks like Metuh

    • taiwo

Olisah Metuh is a sound example of how to be the spokesperson of a party in a civilized and sensible society. His urbane intelligent and likable nature is a major departure from what is obtainable in the janjaweed party where Mr Liar Mohammed holds sway and dishes out treasonable and inciting comments like it is planning on going out of fashion thereby over heating the polity and dividing the country along ethnic lines,Recollect also how effortlessly Metuh has always floored Mr Mohammed whenever they have been guests on any television programme

  • Dankasa

Don’t believe him because the same PDP led Govt. has resulted to send a team of malams (northerners) headed by Sambo Dasuki to Northern Emirs and Rulers to plead with them for their support to form an interim govt. they don’t want conduct election and to confirm this, Sambo is in Kebbi (my State) today on this mission and will leave for Sokoto, Kano and all other northern States so what do you think this PDP mouthpiece is saying? Is just a deceit and it will not work. He Metu is calling support for INEC while his friend Feni is seriously fighting them, what a gimmick? We all go school and can read in between the lines oooO! No more WURU-WURU Baba..!

    • taiwo

keep on smoking bro.More bedtime stories from your hallucinating and cheap drug infested numb skull. We too are reading between the lines and we realise your head is swirling in cloud nine

    • charles peters

Dankasa, are u OK at all. So sending a delegation to woo votersvand leaders of thought is now a crime. Chaiiiii, APC and their supporters are a curse to this nation. God forbid them winning this election.

  • taiwo

So INEC actually sacked two of its staff for colluding with the APC to deny non indigenes in lagos their right to vote.No wonder the APC were screaming for the election to be held not withstanding the fact that many of the citizenry are yet to collect their PVCs because they already have a mean plan to manipulate the process. Can’t wait for 28th to come so we get rid of these noisemakers once and for all.Their toxic brand of change is highly disastrous for our nation

  • Segun

I hope APc will heed this call Metu. This is not time for war like APC and Obj are drumming. We have only one Nigeria. Obj is our general enemy. He meant well for this nation. He wasted 8 yrs. All other political must come together for us to have a peaceful election.

  • Smart Okokobi.

The PDP National Secretary, Olisa Metu, has now said something very good for our Nation and I thank him so much for it. All other Political Parties, including APC should follow in this direction. They should openly and publicly echo similar statements for the good of our Nation. They are enormous benefits to the society in the power of positive communication.
Those of you here saying that the honorable Secretary is playing to the gallery, is he going to practice what he preaches, etc, are very wrong. 1st, you ought to thank him for even making such public statements irrespective of whether he means it or not. 2nd, you suppose to challenge the other political Parties and Stake holders to do the same instead of nourishing negative minds on a very good public Statements by a very high ranking Party Official.
Whether Nigerian Political Parties believe it or not, knows it or not, if all of them start making such good public statements like this one, peace, tranquility, unity and prosperity will return to our Nation. So, APC National Publicity Secretary, it’s turn to give us good, public speech on peace, and unity for our Country irrespective of political affiliations, etc. God bless Nigeria.

  • tunji braimoh

True talk from a real gentleman@Metuh,your press statements provides hope to Nigerians that we shall overcome after all.Compare this to the press statements of the APC that is always filled with bile, hate speeches and threats

    • otapete

The fear of military takeover is the begining of wisdom. Methu knows he will be out of a job.

  • oluwaseyi mayowa

APC’s CHANGE means Critical Harm Awaits Nigeria’s Growing Economy,we say no to 18th century change. On march28th we will March into the future with GEJ our fellow youth and our fresh air

  • Segun

Now that PDP is preaching peace for the first time during a major election in Nigeria. Does it not prove that Jonathan has succeeded in cleaning up the party and weeded away all the criminals and nest of killers in the party.

They have all moved to APC where they are now causing major crisis with politics of do or die introduced by their grand commender OBJ.

GEJ weldone sir, we will re elect u. U are God sent.

    • oluwaseyi mayowa

this a new PDP with a breath of fresh air,the trouble makers hitherto in the party(Obasanjo’s boys)have all transited from the PDP trash can into the APC where they are now screaming change believing that Nigerians are not wise enough to see through their shenanigans but we will disappoint them thoroughly

      • otapete

The fear of military takeover is the begining of wisdom

  • malik shaibu

But the truth of the matter is that my stand has always been this: A changeless change is no change, and a change from Dr Goodluck Jonathan to General Buhari is a good example of a “changeless-change.” And that is why I hold the humble opinion that those who are not ready to galvanize a real-change, but who just want to vote for another “tired-hand-and-feet” who has been recycled over and over must decide on a new fancy-word that cannot be called “change.” For change means just one thing. May God bless Nigeria.

  • charles peters

I have to commend chief Metu for his aptness in delivering his party message to the public. He has warn my support. Thanks to Metu for always putting the record straight.

  • Aisha

obj should leave 9ja alone and go and enjoy the loot he has with him, well God is punishing them one by one now.
    GEJ carry go.

    • otapete

When OBJ was campaigning for Jonathan 2010 I did not hear all this ranting then. Why now.OBJ is not interested in GE. Is it by force? Did Powell not support Obama.

  • Anene Mercy

Obasanjo commited so many artrocities when he ruled, has he given account of his stewardship, are they not all too old to retire why are they seeing and caling ghost where there is none. pls can somebody caution this our elder statemen, if its during obasanjos tenue he would hv wiped off all the people that are abusing him like he did to ode, we have not forgetting all these killed, we are just keeping calm, how many of jonathan enemy has he killed like pateince righly said the blood they share will answer them

  • onyekaokorie

In decent societies criminals like buhari hv no room in politics. buhari wth danjuma, murtala etc conspired n murdered Gen.IRONSI n his host COL.Fajuyi. In 1984 buhari backdated an obnoxious decree n murdered B.Owoh,Ogedengbe n co. Buhari has neither confessed nor appologised for d atrocities (murder, rape, torture etc) he committed against d IBOS during d civil war. Those around buhari including obj are band of looters who dont mean well 4 this country. Obj is talking about corruptiom when he is the corruption in thief. For a start how could obj who was broke in 1999 suddenly turn to a aillonaire overnight, bulding his multibillion naira hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, turning around d moribund
poultry farm in Ota n building a multibillion naira new poultry farm in Sierra Leone if not from corrupt practices. For me n most of my brodas in South East buhari is dead on arrival n no amount of abuse, blackmail, intimidation, name calling wil make us change our stand. As 4 d very few still rooting for buhari in d SE my prayer is that u hv a rethink n join us. ON GEJ WE STAND!

    • Lemmuel Odjay

Have you been reading Olisa? Compare who he is today to what he was in past “janjaweed” days. Do I l-lovee him…? Look! He’s even now an active member of the local Catholic Church! Give thanks, for past mistakes are but over and Psalm 51 has atoned for all. He has embraced 2 Chronicles 7: 14. What a wonderful world? And what are you waiting for? If you delay any further, I would hire a caterpillar and have you uprooted to church next Sunday. Aa aahh!!!

  • Victor Gee

If any body tells me that obj will open his toilet mouth and talk ill against Jonathan, I’ll doubt it. Who is buhari to be afraid of? Is buhari better than Jonathan and obj couldn’t hand over power to him? Obj knew very well that Jonathan have done far better than him. During objs’ tenure, we were not living in peace because I could remember Odi and Zakibia genocide, Ife and modakeke killings, Ijaw and itsekiri clash, Tiv and Jukun conflict, Hausa and yoruba @ shagamu and Lagos killings, Sharia law and miss World killing protest nko? Railways obj couldn’t fix in 8yrs is now working. Ore – sagamu that was death trap during his tenure is now express way including Lokoja- Abuja and Owerri- Onitsha. Obj couldn’t renovate just 2 airports in 8yrs, but just within 4yrs, gej handled 22 Airports, renovated them up to international standard and 9 new airports constructed and 75% completion. In the area of Education, obj failed very woefully but Gej has built 14 new federal universities and 125 Almajiri schools has been established. International monitoring and rating agency now acknowledged Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa, with a Gross Domestic product of Five Hundred and ten billion dollars($510) which also places us as the 26th largest economy growing country in the world. This is progress under Gej. Work has commenced @ 2nd niger bridge and our agricultural sector has been improved tremendiously. Why most Nigerians hate and jealous of good leaders and Prefer bad leaders? Nigerians, especially, efcc and icpc and those mammon worship lawyers that called themselves SAN and chief judge, were all there watching Obj when he sold all nigerian companies, houses, others and pocket the money. Obj killed NITEL, AJAOKUTA STEEL, NIGERIA AIRWAYS, NIGERIA SHIPPING, NAFCON & others in his 8yrs wasteful ruled… Obj or babalawo should go and make peace with God, Jonathan or Nigeria is not his problem.

  • Victor Gee

Voting buhari into power is a curse to dis generation. Those who do not know buhari very well should go back to their drawing board and stop promoting a tyrant/dictator. Buhari ruled dis country b4 when he is still young and not even a single almajiri school was build in his state, is it now he is mentally handicapped and internally ill that he will tranform nigeria? Absolutely trash!!! Any body who think he/she can transform a country within 4yrs is an incurable liar because transformation comes on gradual process. It is very astonishing to find that the same former slaves, now free of their chains, should clamour to be ruled by one who not only turned their nation into a slave plantation, but forbade them any discussion of their conditions. Reasons the tired retired general with vast and versed experience in losing elections can never ever be my president: His remorseless murderer: he killed ogedengbe, owoh, lawal and one other female by apply a law retroactively. He promulgated decree 20 that effectively shacked freedom of speech which u and I enjoys now. Buhari was so wicked to the extent of denied Tai Solarin his medications for asthma and he died. He showed his ethnic bigotry and rapidily morbid disdain for a particular section of the country. Buhari is an imposter and the choice of boko haram. Their aim is to enslave every tribe in Nigeria. Why won’t obj endorsed him? Are they not partners in crime? In 1996 as the head of PTF, buhari stole 2.5 billion naira and it was discovered by obasanjo in 1999 & that was why obj scrapped PTF. Obj covered dis secret because he could also implicate himself if he dare expose dis imposter(buhari). Buhari lied to us that shagari is corrupt because shagari senate committee traced the missing NNPC 2.8 billion dollar(now worth 800,000,000,000.00) into ‪#‎mrintegrity‬ account in midland bank, London branch. .. Tomorrow someone will tell me buhari has no foreign account, he was not collecting salary, he is disciplined and all those trash.

It is on record that President Obasanjo even ridiculed and made jest of Nigerians who were worried about the rumor which suggested that after collapsing during a campaign event Yar’adua was rushed to a foreign clinic and reportedly died. President Obasanjo called a phone number during a Presidential campaign stop and asked whoever was at the other end: “is that you Umaru speaking….so you are alive..”.

With that phone call President Obasanjo seemingly ended the speculations on Yar’adua’s death in 2007. But the man later died, officially in May 2010 but unofficially in December 2009, as a siting President and threw the country into avoidable political crisis that eventually appeared resolved with the “doctrine of necessity” but have remained at the heart of northern political opposition to President Jonathan from 2010 to date. Strangely, the man who started it all by stubbornly hand picking Yaradua in disregard of his health issues, President Obasanjo, is now a darling of the north because he is supporting another northerner from same Katsina State with question marks on his health and age.

Mumuology will soon be a course in Nigerian Universities.

Why will someone who knows he is ill put himself up for political office?

  • malik shaibu

Matthew Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo: Please leave our able President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan alone. You did 8 whole years as president, in your time, Muhammadu Buhari was not allowed to unseat you. Today Buhari has become a saint, your envy for Jonathan cannot stop the good works ongoing. You are looking for interim govt to head, never! you can’t get it. As an old man, you should go and sit at home for children to guide you than pokenosing into Nigeria’s affairs. Nigeria is not your property, Jonathan is doing those things you couldn’t do, and you are getting mad at him. It is his time, your time is past, better go and rest in peace or you will have Allah to contend with.‪#‎ObasanjoBeWarned4DLastTime‬

  • Shuaibu Buhari

There must be understanding among all the political elites if peace must reign in Nigeria. This is where Obasanjo got it wrong. Obasanjo is creating enmities between the the two major parties instead of serving as a unifying factor.
But what we know is that Nigeria must outlive these challenges facing her. Nigeria does not belong to anyone alone. Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians but God.

  • shamsudeen sadiq

  • onyekaokorie

Nigeria politics is really a bad game. So Obasanjo, Buhari, Atiku and Tinubu are now in one political party.
All these men are above 70yrs, they have united against a youthful president. They do not want to retire, they want power returned to an old cargo so that we will remain analogue.
Add ur voice and say NO.

    • Lemmuel Odjay

Is it their fault? If the so called “youthful president” had in the past 6 years been seen as working TIRELESSLY to ensure that the ever growing numbers of millions of Nigeria’s jobless youth find something to do; if Boko Haram had not become a reference point in our everyday lives; if, in his 6 years in government, this “youthful president” had added AT LEAST 6,500MW of power to what he met in office; if a positive give-take dialogue process had been adopted to bring back our ever striking doctors and teachers to work for good; if, rather than seek to franchise roads, the government under this “youthful president” had embarked upon constructing roads across the country and not in Abuja alone, perhaps these “old cargo” ex leaders you refer to could still be enjoying their retirement days at home with grand children running around them. They’ve “made their money” and had the time of their lives in office after all, so what could ever lure them back to office life and its stresses? Beam your searchlight instead on your corrupt youth leadership. Is it not true that, as a youth, you would see nothing wrong in acquiring palaces across the country, with the latest, most expensive state of the art Lexuses at your disposal for example? Would it be “out of order” if you should be required to juxtapose your “achievements” against all normal, reasonable standards? Corruption is a major reason why we are all where we are today, and it is rife in this government headed by your “youthful president”. Abi na lie?

Compare Olisa with Liar Mohammed and tell me what you get?.Calling the APC a janjaweed party is a case of calling a spade a spade and nothing else.Mr Metuh is an intelligent and civilized fellow and has always been known to apply the type of decorum and finesse applicable to a ruling party, his press releases are always factual ,verifiable and devoid of propaganda which is a sharp contrast to that of the APC that always leaves one with the impression that Nigeria is about to go war or you see such outlandish and childish claims that will make one to marvel at the level of intelligence of the people producing the statements.Do yourself a favour and goggle any of the interviews on youtube between Metuh and Mohammed and see for yourself the remarkable difference between them and the articulate manner with which Mr Metuh handles the questions put to him

GOODLUCK JONATHAN TRUELLY HAVE REFORMED PDP THAT MADE OBASANJO TO RAN-OUT OF PDP AS A MEMBER OF PDP.

    Shame to Obj.

  • Rommel

The only thing political parties need to do is to save Nigeria from the PDP,Democracy is being threatened today in Nigeria by the ambition of Jonathan Goodluck who sees winning at all cost as the only option available even though Nigerians have rejected him

  • JAMES DANJUMA

MR METU SHOULD HAVE SAID THE SMALLER PARTIES SHOULD WORK TOGETHER TO SAVE PDP AND NOT TO SAVE DEMOCRACY. NO AMOUNT OF HELP FROM THESE SMALLER PARTIES CAN SAVE PDP FROM DEFEAT. IT IS JUST A SINKING SHIP.

Well said Mr Metuh but no amount of propaganda from the jamjaweed APC can break Nigeria or ruin our democracy, they will scatter after their defeat
