Polls Shift: Mark sues for peace

Senator David Mark

The Senate President, David Mark, has urged Nigerians to avoid anything that would cause chaos in the country, in reaction to the postponement of general elections.

In a statement Tuesday, Mr. Mark said putting Nigerians should put the country first rather than being partisan.
He said it was important that everyone involved in the elections should be on the same page for peace to reign in order to achieve a free and fair elections.

”To conduct a peaceful, free, fair and credible election that meets international best practices, unarguably demands that all stakeholders and participants be on the same wave length.

“Any of the steps not taken or subverted could produce a questionable result, that is why, we must all be careful in what we do or say,” Mr. Mark said.

“I believe all Nigerians, both partisan and nonpartisan are passionate and indeed desirous of a successful election for the good of our nation.

“Let us give peace a chance. Let us dutifully follow the laws and rules and make a success of the situation,” he added.

Mr. Mark said the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should not be condemned for taking rescheduling the polls.

Mr. Mark added that support and understanding is needed from the international groups in this regard.

The postponement of the polls has stirred widespread controversy across Nigeria with the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, accusing the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of being behind the move.

The Programme officer at Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, Audu Abdul, said the major reason for the postponement is because the PDP is scared of losing the elections.

“As it stands today, CDD knows that PDP is afraid to lose the elections, so if anybody tells you they want peace to reign in the country, that’s not true,” he said.

“Before the election was postponed, even David Mark himself said last year that we should not be talking about election because Nigeria is at war.

“They wanted to use the issue of PVC to postpone the election so they came out openly to say that they cannot guarantee security. One thing we should not forget is that as we stand today, the Nigerian army is being politicized.

The Director of Centre for Social Justice, Eze Onyekpere, said the elections must hold on this new dates and let people vote for who they want as their leader.
