Atiku is a ‘shameless liar,’ Obasanjo says in new book

A former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has described Atiku Abubakar, his erstwhile deputy, as a “shameless liar” who plotted against his infamous third term agenda.

At a public presentation of the book ‘Olusegun Obasanjo: My Watch,’ in Lagos, Tuesday, Mr. Obasanjo accused Mr. Abubakar of aligning with his detractors to spin his courageous effort at constitutional reform into myopic claims of tenure elongation.

Messrs Obasanjo and Atiku were Nigeria’s President and Vice President respectively between 1999 and 2007.

Mr. Atiku is contesting for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the 2015 general election.

“Those who can be regarded as influential and who have publicly accused me of allegedly manipulating a third term were Atiku Abubakar, who is a blatant and shameless liar, who was behind the whole episode of turning wholesome constitutional amendment efforts of the National Assembly to a futile exercise and as a means of riding on its ashes to be Nigerian President,” Mr. Obasanjo said.

“Third term was not my agenda or intention although I would not say I didn’t know about it. I didn’t mastermind third term. Those who were telling me to go on were the governors that were going to benefit from it.

“If I did not want tenure elongation when I was military Head of State and had need to, I see no reason why I should be falsely accused of coup planning by Abacha and tenure elongation by Atiku.”

An Abuja High Court had granted an order restraining Mr. Obasanjo from going ahead with the book presentation.

The injunction was sought by Buruji Kashamu, a chieftain of the Peoples’ Democratic Party and close associate of President Goodluck Jonathan, who accused Mr. Obasanjo of libelous accusations in the
book.

But the former president said that going ahead with the book presentation did not violate the court’s order since it had already been printed and published three months ago.

“I had given the book to my editors and to the publisher. As far as I am concerned, my job is done. I had written the book and printed before the court injunction,” Mr. Obasanjo said.

“In a normal judiciary, the judge should be sanctioned and I hope something will be done. We are here legally and lawfully and we will continue to act lawfully and legally.”

The Court on Wednesday found Mr. Obasanjo guilty of contempt and gave the former president 21 days to explain why he should not be punished.

Mr. Obasanjo also took a swipe at President Jonathan, describing the former as the “weakest” leader Nigeria had ever had.

“Although he might wish to do well, he does not know how nor does he have the capacity to,” Mr. Obasanjo said of President Jonathan.

“To compound his problem, he has not surrounded himself with aides sufficiently imbued with the qualities and abilities to help him out.

“Most of them are greedy hangers on or hungry, lacklustre characters interested only in their mouths and their pockets.”

In the book, Mr. Obasanjo also saved harsh remarks for Nasir El-Rufai, the FCT Minister during his administration, and Bola Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor and a leader of the APC.

While Mr. El-Rufai was described as “a brilliant man but economical with the truth,” Mr. Obasanjo said Mr. Tinubu is “definitely one of the worst cases in terms of corruption.”

“Nuhu Ribadu tried to investigate almost all of them to the best of my understanding,” Mr. Obasanjo said on the former Lagos governor.

“At a time, he publicly announced that 28 out of the 36 governors were either manifestly corrupt or had tainted in one way or another. He gave me a copy of his report on those governors. Bola Tinubu was definitely one of the worst cases.”

On Muhammadu Buhari, Mr. Obasanjo described him as a leader who would “not be a good economic manager but who will be a strong, almost inflexible, and courageous and firm.”

  • Mr. Abdin

Obasanjo should please leave Atiku alone.

  • tundemash

Looks like the book has enough shit for everybody so why is drug kingpin Buruji the one most concerned to stop it from being published. or could it be Buruji is being used as a puppet by someone else?

Anyway …. I wonder if OBJ also admitted in the book he (OBJ) committed the greatest attrocity by bequeathing this nation with two sick men as leaders; one had kidney and the other had no brain !

    • blueeyedkitten

      bros, you baaaddd!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Guguru

      tunde,

    • Maria

That is a lie from OBJ…who trained OBJ as economic manager? The man goofed on GMB.

  • Ashibogu

Atiku has been calm receiving insults from Obasanjo. If the man opens up Nigeria will go up in flames. Obasanjo wants to scuttle this democracy in the hope and belief that he will become useful in the new dispensation. He needs to be warned that God did not enthrone him as a god over Nigeria. He has insulted virtually everyone in the polity. Recall that in the heat of strident calls for the actualisation of June 12, Obasanjo said Abiola was not the messiah that Nigeria was waiting for. He deceived Awo in 1978 when he invited him to Dodan Barracks and promised him power in 1979. The old man did not know that he was only fooling him. Even when the chief returning officer for the elections, one Mr. Menkiti was struggling to declare Shagari winner, Obasanjo forced him to return Shagari. If I were Jonathan, I will put him where he belongs. That place is the dungeon. Look at the problem he has caused in Kebbi State. He caused former Governor Aliero to dethrone the fella and install a new Emir. Now, the court has restored him. Perfect storm! Obasanjo’s problem is unforgiveness, bitterness, offence and malice. He is living a defiled life and if he departs in this state his soul will surely go downstairs. Obasanjo needs to repent and be born again!

    • Guguru

Atiku cannot open up because his doodle stinks as much as those of anyone else.

    • Francis Abagi

You forgot that saint Obasanjo is born again. He is even a graduate student in theology to crown his achievements as the chief architect of lies.

Prof Wole Soyinka, the Nobel Laureate said it best when he described Obasanjo-led government as “a nest of killers. Curiously, since his Third Term plan was shot down by Nigerians, the political assassinations have stopped as well. Needless to say, these murders remain unresolved till this day. Indeed, Obasanjo’s well-known corrupt dealings are legion and it would be a boldfaced lie for those who parade him within the international community today as a worthy statesman to claim they have no idea. The series of revelations of the huge corrupt dealings that pervaded the comatose power sector throughout
Obasanjo’s tenure have his imprints all over them. In March 2008, the National Assembly indicted him for supposedly spending $2.2 billion on power without due process. The Transcorp shares, the Obasanjo Library Fund, the COJA contracts,
the PTDF scandal, the Siemens bribe scandal, the oil contracts and oil wells allocation done directly by Obasanjo who also doubled as Petroleum Resources minister are all tips of the iceberg. Obasanjo ran Nigeria aground and, when it was obvious to him that his Third Term bid has failed, he vengefully imposed on the nation the seriously sick brother of his late friend, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua as president.

    • Jasper

I’m glad that you have remembered all these event adequately. Well done!

  • Otile

Ogagun did not need to go bestial to sell his book. Insult is for low grade of people. This is why most APC chieftains have no credibility, they cannot finish any statement without abusing their opponents. There is an alternative to insults, abuses and foul language.

    • Maria

Like you call Buari jihadist and boko haram? It pains you too?

      • Otile

Maria, a good Muslim seeks the wonderful opportunity to be a jihdist. Jihad is a noble deed in Islam. So when people call Imam Buhari a jihadist they are not insulting him. It is secular politics that gives jihadists bad name.

Maria, try to get yourself the Holy Qur-an, you will learn a lot.

        • Yusuf

To die as a jihadist is a great honor to any muslim but only if you understand the meaning of jihad. You need to tell us the verses that makes jihad an evil deed and what the verses actually said, if u actually read the Holy Qur-an. The same Mary in Maria’s photo is the most pious woman in the same Holy Qur-an u are talking about, chosen above all women of the world (chosen above our beloved Prophet’s mother). learn civility and do not preach hate, for, hate is a terrible disease

    • prevail

      I hear u jaree

  • Ade

“a brilliant man but economical with the truth,” because he ( elrufai intelligently transfered Nigeria wealth to you)

  • Fola

The aged should be a blessing to the society. Baba please small small.

  • Ijeuwa

It’s 11 yrs since the third term plot was hatched in Aso Rock and it’s now that OBJ is telling he wasn’t the one who wanted tenure elongation since he has now found a convenient scapegoat. OBJ is only deceiving himself if he actually belives his own lies. I’m sure he’d also tell us he wasn’t the one who invented “do or die” politics. Yeye dey smell!

  • John

Obasanjo gave us two bad leaders: one with no kidney and another with no brain.

    • Yusuf

he actually gave us 3, one with no kidney, one with no brain; there was another with no liver (in 1979)

  • prevail

The pioneer, architect, and chief sponsor of corruption now have mouth to nail everybody in his rubbish writwrite-ups.
Niger is indeed a lawless country for a very few•••••••••••••••

  • Yusuf

“If I did not want tenure elongation when I was military Head of State and had need to, I see no reason why I should be falsely accused of coup planning by Abacha and tenure elongation by Atiku.”
