A civil society organization, Transition Monitoring Group, TMG, has condemned the invasion of the National Assembly by police officers and other armed security agents.

The Chairman TMG, Zikirullahi Ibrahim, on Thursday, at a World press conference titled “State of the Nation” said the action would go down in history as one of the most ignoble attempts to subvert democracy and the principle of separation of powers.

Mr. Ibrahim said those who ordered the ill-advised clamp down on the National Assembly should be made to know that their action was a declaration of war against the Nigerian people.

He said “it’s surprising that anyone with an understanding of the sacredness of this institution would order the kind of shameful assault, including the tear gassing of lawmakers”.

Mr. Ibrahim stated that TMG frowns at “the might is right approach, which has been deployed in apparent pursuit of what looks more like vendetta.

“We are not in doubt that the issue of the defection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives from the ruling party to the opposition is a matter for a court of competent jurisdiction to decide on,” he said.

He added that the police action of November 20 amounts to a patent illegality, a clear case of an institution of the state taking the laws into its own hands and resorting to self-help.

The TMG called to question the credibility of the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba and his ability to enforce law and order in the forthcoming 2015 elections, saying his actions depict partisanship in favour of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

On November 20, the police stopped the House of Representative members from the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, were prevented from entering the National Assembly complex.

Security operatives also threw tear gas at some law makers and their aides.
